Just a little update on me... Last week I went my to opthamalogist (sp?) for my annual checkup. He found a couple of spots on my left eye. He did about 12 zaps with the laser. Everytime I see him, he says he's always amazed at how my eyes are in such good condition for a person who's had diabetes (type 1) for 33 years. Makes me feel good to hear that. Then yesterday, I had my annual appointment with my optomotrist. Just a little change in my lenses. $572 of a change! Since I'm on the computer most of the day, he recommended just strengthening my prescription and lowering my computer screen so that I'm looking slightly down at it. Right now it's up on a shelf on my desk and I have to tilt my head back everytime. My neck is getting lots of exercise! He also took a picture of my retina. Really cool. So I got to see the veins and beginnings of aneurysms, etc.and he pointed out the healing/results of last weeks' laser work. Next year when I go again, he'll compare the picture taken then to this years. Kind of like having a base mammogram, lol. Let me say that seeing the picture of my retina really gave me incentive to keep my blood sugars normal. And to stay away from secondhand cigarette smoke since that weakens the blood vessels in the eyes. I don't smoke - never have - but almost everyone else does where I work. They don't smoke in the office, thank goodness. Not too much else is new with me. Just thought I'd give everyone an update - I feel like I haven't been here at all lately. Take care everyone Chris |

You haven't been here lately, and I was starting to get worried. Glad to see you were just busy! So...after the flourescene angiograpphy, did you pee green? And did it freak you out? I remember thinking my urine could glow in the dark. Isn't it the coolest thing to see your retinas on polaroids? And it is nice to have a baseline record so that the doc can compare it to any future studies you have done. Congrats on the excellent report! And was the over $500 figure for one or two pair of glasses? Expensive! Glad to hear from you, honey! Take care, and stay in touch! HUGS! sheryl |

Lol Sheryl! Um, my pee wasn't green! I didn't have to have any drops or anything for the optometrist appointment. For the picture, they had me look into the lense of this really huge machine, then there was a bright green flashing light that took the picture. Then they sent the picture to my doctors computer. I went into his office and he discussed it with me as he was showing me the image on the screen. Really cool to see my retina on a 22" wide screen. Yeah, the $572 is just for lense/prescription upgrade for my current frames. I like my frames, so I didn't bother with any new ones. The lenses are supposed to be the latest thing...kind of like a tri-focal - he gave it some special name - I can't remember what he called it. I will try to get here more often Take care Chris |

Hi Mary! Glad to hear from you too! Yeah, my insurance only pays for $100 every two years for glasses. Not much, but every little bit helps I guess. Take care Chris |

WOW! There must have been some big time improvements since I had my retinas photographed! I had to have an IV line with this contrast material injected (flourescene). That is what turned my urine bright flourescent green! And the photos were bright yellow with the veins showing up dark red. Very cool stuff, though. Turns out it was hard on the kidneys...go figure. Those glasses were costly costly costly! Now if I had to say that...tongue twister! But I'm sure they look gorgeous on you! Use them with luck and good health. Again, so happy things turned out well! HUGS! sheryl |

Hey Chris! Like Sheryl, I have been wondering where you were. It's been a while! You and Sheryl got all the neat tricks at the eye doc. I just went to my retina doc and I got neither the big pictures nor the green pee! I feel left out! This was not for vision, just for my retina check. He told me to go get my vision checked by someone else (optometrist) and suggested I have cataracts but gave me no details about them! Docs and their specialties! Phhoey! It's great to hear from you. It sounds like it was your optometrist who did the retina pictures not the opthamologist. Hmmmmm. When I go to the optometrist I will tell them not to deal with my retinas since that is why I went to the retina specialist........ So confusing..... As long as we can see well enough to function, I guess we can live with it. Take care..... Julie |

I once requested they not do the dye thing on me, it makes me really really sick. So they sent me, with eyes already dilated, down to some lab where they took pictures and all I did was stare at something that looked like purple fireworks. It was pretty cool. The 12 lasers sounds way better than the darn 400 and 450 I had at one time (I never want that again.) I hope everything stays calm for you. My 1200 laser beam eye has permanent things floating in my field of vision, all the time, but I can still read and all that. |
