Well it's pretty much like a pump infusion set if you're familiar with pumps.  You insert it and it continuously reads your blood sugar all day.  It sends the readings to a hand held device (meter).  I believe you have to change it like you would an infusion set - about every 3 days.  My doctor discussed this with me for when I eventually get a new pump that this technology was out there and available. I know MiniMed has this set up with one of their pumps.  I think it's great to have continuous monitoring but I could do without the other insertion.  One for my pump is enough for me.  I'll stick to my traditional finger pricks.

And you have to buy sensor pads and still do fingersticks during the day to calibrate with this device.
The insurance companies are not yet fond of paying for this and it is not cheap.
My CDE friend said she finally got one approved the other day for someone, but it wasnt easy.
She likes using it, because it helps her out.  For me it;s too much having two sites.....one more stick I dont need in my poor skin.

The CGMS (Continuous Glucose Monitoring System)  is available with the Medtronic Minimed Paradigm pumps (522 or 722).  A 10-pack of sensors costs $475 Canadian - well out of reach of my budget.  Each sensor is supposed to be changed every 3 days, although I've read that people leave it in longer.

When I got the pump approved by insurance, I thought that they would pay for the "attached" (via radio frequency) CGMS.  They balked at the submitted monthly cost from Medtronic, understandably, but they DID pay out $6400 of the $6800 pump cost.   So, I now have a pump with no CGMS.  Even if I could use it, I'm lean and have a hard time finding sites that work (seems I don't have enough fat) so I don't know that needing TWO sites would work for me.
