Hi Beli,,,,,, I'm sorry I also am not a mother of a type1 but my sister is. If she hadn't just been through the hurricane I would call her up and have her answer your questions/fears.
It is perfectly normal for EVERY mom of a first grader to be nervous,,,,, much less the mother of a diabetic child,,,, that just adds another layer to it.
It is a shame you couldn't have meet his teacher ahead of time to see her and talk to her about your concerns. Like what time they will be having lunch ect. Every school system is different. I remember my sister being upset because Mark could not have his meter in class with him in LA at that time. He would have to go down to the nurse's station to get it. Don't know how your district is or even if N.O. is the same even,,,,,,,,, hopefully they will let him keep it with him or at the teacher's desk.
Ask all the questions you want to Honey of the teacher and the principal. I'm sure they will let you put some emergency type of sugar source in the room where he is and perhaps he should carry some gluco tablets with him at recess, if he can tell when his sugars are dropping.
Take deep breaths,,,,,,, he will be o.k.! Hugs, Cuddles/Kathy
