Hi,
I was wonder if there is any info about preventing Type 2.
I know I have been fighting with for quite awhile.
I was told drink water, watch grains and seed carbs, lose weight, exercise, control the stress, use Chorium to help lower bs when above 120, take my fasting bs once a week, and watch the caffiene. The doctor says I am doing good at preventing D, but I was doing better 4 years ago.
I have been told that I was luck to catch my elevated BS early becasue I prevent my high risk from being Type 2.
My eyes tell be about my BS level is below 100, I don't need my glasses. Above 125 my glasses are required. Between 100-125 it depends on what I am doing if I need my glasses. This has been explain as fluid retinsiom in the eye, as BS goes up the eye retains more fluid making the eye larger casuing the focul length to change (making farsighted). As BS goes down eye goes back to it normal size changing back to 20/20. I have a simple test to see where BS is. If I can focus in on my nose it is less than 100, if I focus on the rim on my glass then it is between 100-125, If  I can't focus on the glasses rim the it is above 125.
Thanks for the chance to vent.
Eugene

That is really interesting on the changes in the eyes. I am so nearsighted but at 48 have become more and more dependent on not using my glasses for close up work. I'll have to remember to test when I feel that I am seeing less well at closer distances.

Your doctor hit all the high points on preventing diabetes. Sometimes depending on family history, age, weight and just plain old bad luck, no matter what you do you will get diabetes.

You might have to exercise stricter control on the carbs. They don't cause diabetes, but they exacerbate the high blood sugar. Also for those who can medically handle it, a glass of dry wine - preferably red - will help to lower BG. Not for everyone, and it may interfere with other issues. Confirm with your medical professionals if it's ok with you.

Also keeping your BP and cholesterol levels down to better than normal will also slow the progression of diabetes. They all work together.

Hi LauraG.
Back when I first found I high risk of D,
I was legally blind in my left eye and driving restriction my drivers liense. Dropped over 100 point off the BS in 2 weeks and stated lossing weight. Though I was going blind could not see with out my glasses and it was worst with them. Could  see with glasses that were 10 years old. Eye doctor could not write a prescription because my eyes would change every 3-5 minutes.
Lost 60 pounds and got BS less than 100
I could see. Eye doctor was able to do a prescription and it was what my presciption was 25 years earlier. I don't have any restrictions on my driving now.
Thanks
Eugene

Eugene and others,

Very interesting to hear about your eyes.  I told my eye doctor that I saw fluctuations in my vision when he was trying to get the shape of my eyes to go back to normal for a few months.  He blamed it on ill-fitting contact lenses and said that blood sugars don't affect vision on a daily or hourly basis like that.  I didn't believe him.  I just took a two week car trip across country and have not exercised the whole time and have eaten badly also.  I can hardly wear my contacts because they just bug my eyes.  I left my glucose monitor somewhere along the way so haven't been able to test, but what you say makes so much sense to me.

Eugene,

Studies such as DREAM, ADOPT and one found at: http://www.diabetesincontrol.com/results.php?storyarticle=5922 all show that TZD drugs slow the pregression of type-2 diabetes or delay the onset of diabetes. I have been on TZDs for ten years, exercise a lot, have reached the age of 66 without complications. Feel great! My glucose numbers have been and continue to fall, average fasting glucose is 105.

For some TZDs cause water retention and should not be used . Since TZDs reduce insulin resistance, they can cause weight gain unless you eat less. Since TZDs increase the uptake of glucose by muscles, they seem to increase strength and endurance for me. Blood flow and heart health have improved since being on TZDs.

Avandia is the only diabetic drug, I have used for the last eight years. My belief is that exercise and TZDs are a very effective treatment for some.
