Hello Tom, If you are a newly diagnoased diabetic , it's best to go on a high low carb diet. Meaing eat lean meats poultry and fish and vegetables staying away from starchy vegs like corn, peas  eat more geen vegetables. After you've got your sugars undercontrol you can add more carbs, testing to see how much you can handle on your meds or insilin. Drink lots of water to help your kidneys flitering well.
 
My brother inlaw who was recently diagnosed with a rare disease called " Wegener's granulomatosis " and diabeties who takes a lot of meds didn't drink enough water, he is in the hospital now with an infection of the throat because he was not drinking enough water to wash down his meds, some of the medicine was not being washed down and formed a crust in his throat, now is infected ..so drink lots of water.
