what a pretty bird! i'll put pics up when i free more storage. is petey moulting? my blue and gold is. growing in new feathers. getting downy ones all over, its like its snowing in here sometimes. touched a pin feather accidently.... boo-boo didnt like that!.... ooops. boy, they sure are moody during this time. my cockatiels have eggs again...theyre an unproven pair. me? dont want baby tiels, but i cant stop them from laying. and i think separating them would cause them too much anxiety. gsees |

Petey usually moults when the heat gets turned on for the winter. When that dry heat starts coming out of the vents, Petey starts throwing his underwear into the air. (that's what I call his little downy feathers next to his body ) If you're walking by him when he's throwing out underwear, you might accidentally snort one up your nose. Ahhhhhhh-choooooo! They float in the air for a bit before falling to the floor. I always collect a variety of his feathers for future memorabilia. I have a small jar of my first bird's feathers and I'm so glad I kept them. When he died, I felt like one of my kids died. If I didn't have those feathers, I would have nothing left of him. Glad to have another bird Mom on board. People are always talking about their dogs and cats on here so it's nice to hear about birds. |

yeah its nice having another bird mom. i've had one or two of them downy fluffs.( i call them fluffs.) up my nose. fun fun fun... i tend to play with them. ... i bet they'd make great hair for some little craft doll. can piture it now... a little wooden clothespin with painted eyes and fluff hair LOL could make a whole family of them. maybeee turn them into little angels? there goes my imagination. i keep the feathers BooBoo loses. have a lot of blue feathers saved. he just lost a tail feather... i waited and waited for it to fall off. dont dare pull em out, so i anxiously wait for them to fall off. getting that tail feather was a treat. thought i might make a dream catcher from some of the feathers, and put a pic of BooBoo in the middle of it. that way i'd have a memorial to him. thing is though, hes a blue and gold macaw and will probly outlive me. i call him a he, for all i know its a she...cant tell without testing. so far hes only bonded with me...wish he would bond with someone else too... i could use a break sometimes.... it is really like having a child, cept this child can fly, and take your finger off. gsees |

i'm in alabama so i wonder if the moulting is diffrent here. i'm glad you saved those feathers too. it broke my heart when my budgies died, and i didnt save anything. my friend gave me the tiels. the female (smokey) liked me and no one else, and since bird brain(the other tiel) was a cage mate, she didnt want to separate them. soooo what happens? they live here, and decide to mate, i had no clue at first. guess theyre bonded now. have eggs again. i noticed something. my roomie has a double yellow headed amazon, and i am more leery about the smaller beak birds. i'm not scared of the large hook bill of my macaw at all. even at pet stores the large hook bill beaks dont scare me. now the lunging? that a whole other story. BooBoo i can handle ,but he still knows how to get me offgaurd. . hes an ornery little brat sometimes. question? can you read Petey's eyes? like his moods? i can with BooBoo. i bet Petey is as sweet as he looks. bet hes spoiled too huh? gsees |

That is not an actual picture of Petey. It's a photo of another conure like Petey. I don't have a digital camera yet so I haven't posted anything but a very blurry pic of Petey in my picture album on here. Petey can be VERY ornery. He resents the fact that I am spending so much time in the yard now. He doesn't like for me to be on Puter. Forget doing paper work. He shrieks non-stop when I pay bills, address Christmas cards or God forbid--compile and get tax info ready for the accountants! He holds a grudge. When I have done any of the above------he will bite me hard---usually on the knuckle of my index finger. Once he has paid me back by drawing blood, he is all nice and sweet---making kissing sounds and saying "What cha doin', shug?" (shug = sugar) If he gets too excited by too much singing and dancing or rowdy play with anyone, he will start "play biting" which can turn into real biting if things keep getting rowdy. I can always tell when he is in a biting mood. For some reason, he likes to attack my arm when I give him his vegetables in the morning. He LOVES his vegetables so that is not why he is biting. I bring his cooked vegetables upstairs to him on a napkin. The only way he won't bite me when I give him the vegetables is to stick the napkin through the cage for him to "rag it" like a dog does. If I skip the napkin ragging, I get bitten. Petey is 13 years old. I got him when he was one year old from a bunch of college students who shared a house with a Dalmatian. Petey had some VERY BAD habits when I got him. When we went to see him at his previous home, he drew blood on all three of us. My husband and son were very put off by this and didn't want to buy him but after the college students casually said that he had a cold because there was no place to put his cage except in front of the WINDOW AIR CONDITIONER UNIT and that the dog was found with PETEY IN HIS MOUTH and that they didn't keep his wing feathers trimmed and that HE FLEW UP ON THE ROOF, I just had to buy him to save him from that place. I am amazed that they were able to get him back after he flew up on the roof! I forgot to say that Petey was also exposed to enough cigarette smoke to have given him lung cancer already. As soon as we got Petey home, he screamed "F*** You !" I told my husband and son not to acknowledge it in any way--not to scold him, say anything to him or even look at him if he said it again. It worked! To this day, he has never said it again. |

i am sooo glad you you rescued Petey from that place. sounds like the kids had no clue about birds. no wonder he had problems. i'm sure your love and understanding is what turned him around. hard to get a good pic of a moving bird, even when they are still they manage to move just as you're snapping the pic. i finally got a digital camera at xmas. sounds like Petey has you trained too. yeahh, BooBoo has me trained. probly cuz i spoil him rotten... man it hurts getting bit on the knuckle doesnt it. i'm sure our sweet darlings just know where its gonna hurt the worst... little buggers,,, i'm BooBoo's 3rd owner. he came to me with quite a vocabulary including the F word. had like 4 diffrent ways he used it too. i managed to get him to stop using it, but sometimes when he's in a real sassy mood , and i tell him dont eat that...he will say F you at me. mostly now its a sassy ...no... i get. BooBoo just loves to eat. he's not as picky as the amazon. we give him a variety of things. he loves potatos. he still gets scared when i try to mist him tho, so i turn it into a game. once he figures that it feels good, he will settle down and let me mist him. i havent taken him to the shower yet. i dont think hes ready for that. having a bird sure does teach you patience, also teaches you to watch what you say. whatever you say, will be repeated at some point in time. i noticed i eat better since i got BooBoo. gsees |

I consider the wild birds I feed my pets. Since I live near a slough, I get some exotic, colorful birds in the yard. |

i never really owned before i moved to alabama. now that i have them, i absolutely love it!. who would have guessed that i was a bird person? i seem to understand them...go figure. i've always been an animal lover.grew up with dogs, cats, and whatever my sisters or brothers drug home, or wanted. my sisters had parakeets, but did nothing with them. thats sad cuz they are so socialable, and sweet. there were hampsters, and lizards, mice, gerbils, turtles, fish..etc etc. we would put food out for the wild birds. after i left home i owned cats for a long time. then when i couldnt have them , i had pet rats. really, pet rats are cool. they are intelligent, and can be sooo sweet. i had 3 of them. then had to give them up when i moved cross country. now?? i have a blue and gold macaw. BooBoo . cant imagine life without him. hes my joy. gsees |
