PRELUDE: Mielikki charges Hi'el Troiye to bring back Siannodel's Daughter, Lillineth and Her Unborn Daughter as a balancing of the scales for accidentally killing the Elven Knight Celebril.
Siannodell's gracefully aged face warmed with a tired smile as she made her way back to the Temple of the Alliance. Though it had only been an afternoon and evening, Mielikki's High Priestess felt it had been an eternity since she had seen the white marble walls and delicate, yet strong architecture of the building she called home. As she slowly walked up the wide, white stone steps, the senior acolyte, Melanie, came running out to greet her. The young woman's dark brown eyes were relieved upon seeing that Siannodell had returned to them. Without hesitating, Melanie wrapped the elder woman in a tight hug. "Oh, I'm so glad you're safe, Mother Siannodell!" she cried. "It's so good that you've come back, we were all starting to get worried. How did it go? Did you smite them with Mielikki's wrath? Did they fall to their knees in fear?" The young priestess bombarded Siannodell with questions as they made their way into the cool, scented dimness of the Temple's Main Sanctuary.

Siannodel smiled and then issued a quiet sigh to the girl. "Melanie, suffice it to say that things will proceed as Holy Mielikki wishes it. I had very little to do with why they left, I think, but Mielikki be praised, they have gone." The older woman shuffled slowly towards her private chambers at the rear of the Nave. "Now dear, I'm sorry, but I feel as if I could sleep for days. I'm that weary. If you'd be so kind as to let Sir Hi'el know I've returned safely, then I would be in your debt, child." Melanie nodded and then gasped in surprise as she noticed the High Priestess was wearing a new Holy Symbol. "Mother! What happened to your Holy Symbol?!" she asked in a shocked voice. Siannodell simply smiled again with patience and said, "That's a long story, and one I'll gladly tell you after I've rested a bit. Now please, Melanie, let me sleep for now. I've earned it. Wake me on the morrow if I haven't awakened already. Good night, child." As they reached the door to Siannodell's private room, Melanie nodded in understanding and then added one last thing as the older woman entered her room. "Alright, but you should know that Princess Lita was here. That woman needs to be dealt with, Mother. She was spouting some nonsense about being a mediator between the Temple and the Trinity. Oh, and there was a Sir Marsala looking for you, too. I think he's a paladin of some sort. Isn't he the one married to Lady Diedra? Well anyway, I'll let you get some sleep now. I'll see if I can find Hi'el and let him know you're back. Good night, Mother Siannodell. It's good to have you home." Siannodell kept her gentle smile and simply nodded, softly closing the door. Yes, it was good to be home.

The next morning, Siannodell awoke with the rising sun, as had been her habit for the last twenty-five years or so. She laid in her bed for a moment, reflecting on the dream that had come to her in the night, and fought hard against the tears and emotions that threatened to overwhelm her. Sia sat up in her bed and stared out the window in thought, her visage saddened and full of forgotten pain. The dream had taken her back to her youthful twenties, before she had joined the cause of Mielikki. Back in those days, her skin had been a smooth cream, and her long tresses had shone like freshly spun honey, her golden brown eyes full of innocence. That innocence had been given to the wrong person, and though she had loved Nethariel with all of her heart, the fact that he was elven was enough to damn them both. Afraid of what his kin might do to him...exile or even death...she had kept her pregnancy a secret from him as long as she had been able. But her love had been quick to notice the subtle differences and changes in her that expecting had wrought. Within only a month, Nethariel had drawn the truth from her, and she had wept for a long time, held closely in his strong, supportive embrace.

He had helped her birth the child in secret, in a place deep in the forests where they had often met. Siannodell’s daughter had come into the world as her mother reclined on a bed of soft green leaves, beneath the swaying branches of trees in full summer bloom and a sky of deepest blue. They had wanted to name her Lilly, and indeed the half-elven child was as fair as the flower that would have been her namesake. But only minutes after she was born, as the handsome, brown haired and green eyed elf had rocked his beautiful daughter, tragedy struck. The band of four orcs had obviously been wandering lost for a few days, and at the sight of their sworn enemies (an elf and human) they had probably been incited to attack from nothing more than chaotic boredom. Nethariel had fought well, killing them all with the magical sword that was always at his waist, but he had paid for protecting his lover and infant child, sustaining grievous injuries in the battle. He had crawled over to Sia, his blood staining the ground and mingling with the blood of childbirth, swearing his undying love to her. Sia had held her precious daughter in one arm and her soul-mate with the other, unable to see through the tears that blinded her. She cradled Nethariel’s head in her lap and whispered his name over and over as the life in his eyes faded and finally went out...and then his corporeal body faded as well, leaving Siannodell alone with her daughter and the bodies of the dead orcs.

Finding the strength to go on only for her otherwise helpless child, Sia had returned to the small, rural village where she had grown up. Her parents had been long dead, taken by the plague, and she knew few folk that remained in the hamlet. But the abbey still stood, and it was here that Siannodell had left her only child. She had come to the decision in the hours after Nethariel’s death that she could not care for her daughter in her emotionally distraught state. So she had left her in a woven reed basket full of soft grasses and the only cloak she owned as a coverlet, on the steps outside the abbey in the dark of night. She had written a note and attached it to the basket with a leather thong. The note only had one line: This is Lillineth. Please take good care of her and raise her right.

A gentle knock at her chamber door startled Siannodell from her memories and she called out in a shaky voice, "Yes?" She immediately recognized the voice that answered as Melanie’s, the head acolyte below Sia. "It’s dawn, Mother. You said to wake you." Siannodell sighed and called out a soft thanks, listening for Melanie’s footsteps to recede. When she was sure that there was no one to hear, Mielikki’s High Priestess of Elmshade put her head in her hands and quietly wept.

Ghaliver laughed at Hi'el's proposal and shook his head in wonder that the horse-man knew so little about the cost of good information. But the halfling had to give him credit for trying, and surmised that Hi'el would probably be more inclined to leave and he would be more likely to get his gold if he told the man the price included everything. All of this went through the fat hobbit's mind in a few seconds, and his face only showed a shrewd calculation.

Ghaliver cleared his throat. "Eghhhhm...sure. I'm not an unkind man, after all, so we'll say it's all-inclusive." He threw the blankets off of him and got out of the bed. He was dressed in a long, white cotton night-shirt, but it seemed a little tight around his midsection. He paused to scratch his rather large backside and then mounted one of the stools at the table, rubbing his hands together in anticipation. He was smiling. Breakfast and the possibility of making money always made him happy.

Jalinda, in the meantime, had raised a brow and looked at Ghaliver with a knowing glance when Hi'el asked about what five gold pieces would cover. It wasn't hard to deduce that Hi'el was being over-charged by the look on the pretty female hobbit's face. But, Jalinda also knew where her proverbial bread was buttered, and as much as she might want to help the Silenni, she didn't want to risk the innkeep's disfavor. So, she stayed quiet and began to spread butter and jam on a slice of toast.

~ ~ ~ For whatever reason, something about seeing the fat Hobbit climb out of bed and scratch his fat hairy backside made the young Silenni suddenly blurt out "Gnolls!  Gnolls have her."  It had been puzzling him about the whole situation.  Between mouthfuls of oats and apples, Hi'el wondered aloud "Why would Gnolls attack Dace, destroy a temple to Sune, and only kidnap a single pregnant Half-Elven girl?  It's not typical behavior for Gnolls"  The curious look Jalinda gave Ghaliver was the confirmation the Shadoweir needed to gauge the truthfulness of the Innkeeper and the gold value for the services being rendered.  Jalinda's silence about the situation demonstrated her loyalty to her boss, and helped provide another piece of the puzzle.  The Horse-Fey paced the room, continuing his chain of thought "The Gnolls had to be mercenaries, but for whom were they working?  And why is someone after this girl?"  With the bowl of oats polished off and the apple cider drained, Mielikki's Servant looked for further inspiration in the Hobbit's room. ~ ~ ~

Ghaliver stiffened as Hi'el mentioned gnolls, but was swift to cover the action by slipping into a back popping stretch. The innkeep hopped onto the last empty stool at the table and began to load up his plate. He let the Silenni ponder out loud and kept from saying anything by shoveling food into his fat jowls. His beady eyes switched back and forth between watching Jalinda and studying Hi'el.

Jalinda ate delicately, but dabbed at her mouth with her napkin. She gave an almost imperceptible nod as Hi'el mentioned that the gnolls must be mercenaries. "That does sound like they were working for someone, for sure," she said nonchalantly in agreement with the Shadoweir. "I wonder who would want a pregnant woman dead, and why? I mean...it might make sense if the child were to inherit a throne or something, you know, you hear about that kind of thing all the time, but that probably isn't the case with your missing girl, Hi'el." The manner in which Jalinda spoke was very off-hand, as if she were making casual speculations along with what Hi'el was saying, but there was something about the fixed smile on her pretty face which said volumes more. It was clear to Hi'el that she was trying to help him without being obvious about it...Ghaliver was watching, after all.

~ ~ ~ Something strange was going on here.  That much was clear to Hi'el.  The way the Hairfoot tensed up at the mention of the Gnolls, and had suddenly shut up led the Silenni to believe that he knew more about what was going on than he was revealing.  And even more strange was that Ghaliver's Mistress was providing possible pieces to the mystery.  But the Innkeeper had yet to make any overt move to shut Jalinda up.  Judging by the way his eyes flicked to and fro, either the Hobbit was concerned about what she was telling him, or hadn't figured out a way to discretely shut her up without drawing attention to himself.  The Shadoweir returned his bowl and mug to the small table, and sat down on the large ironwood chest.  The Horse-Fey wasn't sure he could out wit the Halfling, so decided to play a bluff. ~ ~ ~

~ ~ ~ Taking what Jalinda had stated, the Servant of Mielikki nodded at the possible motivation for the kidnapping, and watching the Hobbits eat, quietly confirmed "That makes sense.  The woman herself is of Half-Elven Blood.  And the one who sired the Child is an Elf.  Or so I assume, based on what Elias told me.  That would make the Child almost fully of Elven Blood."  The young Silenni attempted to be non-chalant in his scrutiny of the two, as he further explained "Since I'm fairly certain the woman isn't of royal blood, perhaps the Father of the Child is.  But that is an assumption also."  The Shadoweir paused a moment to *appear* to be checking the bandages on his legs, and through the auburn strands of his hair watched Ghaliver, as he mentioned "I intend to capture the Gnolls. And each one I capture, will force it to tell me everything it knows about who hired or helped them.  I'm sure the Elves would want to know that information too, especially if there was royalty involved."   Looking up from his inspection of his bandages, the Horse-Fey told the Hobbits, "As you're eating, I'll spare you the details of what I've seen Wood Elves do to those who are the target of their vengeance.  It isn't a pleasant way to die." and looked for any sign his bluff was working. ~ ~ ~

The Shadoweir noticed Ghaliver glaring at Jalinda as Hi'el pretended to be checking his bandages. The look in the innkeep's eyes were warning enough to the female halfling to keep her pretty mouth shut from that moment on. Jalinda caught Ghaliver's silent warning and cast her eyes downward to her plate, appearing cowed.

As Hi'el continued to play his bluff, he noted that the fat hobbit's face had paled and a couple of fine beads of sweat had popped out on his temples. Ghaliver kept eating, but his chewing had slowed. Hi'el could tell that his ruse was causing some sort of reaction within the innkeeper's mind.

"Heh, yeah," Ghaliver gave a mirthless chuckle. "Those gnolls sure will be in for it if you or the elves get a hold of them, I'm sure." He paused and took a long swallow from his own mug. Then he wiped his plump hand against his mouth. "So, would you like the name of that midwife I mentioned, Mr. Hi'el?" Ghaliver's smile was just slightly too wide and accommodating for comfort. The little man was a weasel, to be sure, but it was difficult to decide if he was predatory enough to be dangerous or just plain greasy.

~ ~ ~ It had become all too apparent to the Silenni that the Hairfoot knew more about what was going on than he was letting on about.  Now was the Halfling's motivation fear for his life or purely greed?  Enough beating around the bush, it was time to get answers, and not in a polite way either.  The Shadoweir walked from the ironwood chest back over to the small table, and innocently reaching toward the teapot, instead, without a second thought, grabbed across it for the fat Hobbit.  Hi'el aimed for the scruff of his night shirt [Irony - not working; rolls detailed below] intent on choking the Innkeeper with it, as he attempted to drag him from his chair and onto the table.  As he did so, the Servant of Mielikki angrily declared "Ghaliver!  You KNOW something you're NOT telling me!  I can see it in your eyes!  And that's as bad as lying to me!  What is it you know?!  Out with it!  Or shall I invoke the Goddess' power, and put a curse on you!" ~ ~ ~

Hi'el's fast reflexes paid off, for the pudgy inkeeper was completely surprised. His bug eyes bulged even further from his fat face and the sweat began to accumulate on his forehead even faster as the frustrated Shadoweir yanked him forward across the breakfast table dishes by his night-shirt collar. Ghaliver sputtered and clawed thick hands at the strong wrists which held his throat captive.

"Wait!" he choked out in a half-terrified gasp. Hi'el had been smart enough to not allow the hobbit enough air to properly yell for aid and Jalinda backed away from the table, looking ready to bolt through the door any moment. Her beautiful eyes were wide with alarm and she appealed to the Silenni's gentler nature. "Please don't hurt him! He's not evil, I promise. He's just...." The halfling woman struggled to find the right word and only one kept bouncing around in her head. "Stupid," she finished lamely and bit her bottom lip.

Realizing that there was no possible way he could break Hi'el's grasp, Ghaliver struggled to take in a larger breath. His complexion had gone an ashen grey as he weighed the very limited options before him. Hi'el could see the gears spinning furiously behind the innkeep's piggish eyes and could see that Ghaliver might not be as stupid as his bedmate had just pronounced him. "I...I...if I tell you, they'll know, and they'll come kill me, Mr. Troiye," he said, momentarily forgetting Hi'el's request to use his adopted name. The small hobbit did indeed look terrified and as Hi'el held him close, he could smell the sweaty fear that was all too apparent on Ghaliver's face.

~ ~ ~ Only sparing Jalinda a momentary glance after her entreaty, the Shadoweir turned his angry gaze back upon the greedy Hobbit, and giving him a sharp shake with both hands just enough to knock his head back against the table, told him, "I'm not going to hurt you, Ghaliver.  I'll leave the decision of what form the curse will take up to Mielikki, my Goddess!  Whom I shall remind you sent me on this mission to RECOVER this woman and her child!  SHE is NOT likely to show favor to someone who HINDERS the mission of Her servant.  Do I make myself CLEAR?!"  The Silenni delivered several added shakes to puncuate his words, and help them penetrate the fear clouded minded of the Innkeeper.  The Horse paused for a moment in thought, staring at the Hairfoot, and then firmly explained "Oh, and another thing, since the kidnappers aren't likely to just hand her over to me, it means I'll have to kill them.  And if they're dead, they can't very well come kill you.  Now, how's that sound.  You are going to tell me what I want to know!  You are going to HELP me kill those responsible.  Do we understand one another?"  Hi'el pulled the terrified Hobbit closer to his face, and stared directly into his eyes. ~ ~ ~

Ghaliver waited for Hi'el to stop shaking him and as the Silenni pulled him close, the halfling met his determined gaze with one of resignation. He nodded in silence and gulped. "Okay. Put me down and we'll talk," the innkeep again grasped the Shadoweir's strong wrists in an effort to loosen their hold on him.

Once Hi'el had let him sit back down on his stool, Ghaliver adjusted his nightclothes more comfortably around his body again and sighed miserably at his half eaten breakfast. He had lost all signs of an appetite. He looked at Hi'el for a long minute and then spoke in a quiet voice, although all hint of smugness had disappeared from it. "Your goddess doesn't matter to me, horse-man. But my life does matter to me. I'm not gonna help you kill anyone, but I'll tell you as much as I know. Who you decide to kill or not after that is blood on your hands, not mine. The elven nation is quite extensive after all, and they have contacts all over the realms, so I doubt you'll be able to kill them all, anyway."

Ghaliver paused and decided to take a drink of his morning ale. After swishing it around in his mouth for a second, he swallowed, grimaced and then continued. "The gnolls were just mercs, hired by Prince Enarat to make sure the bloodlines stayed pure. His...tryst...with your girl was apparently more...erhm...fruitful...than he wanted. Considering that he's very much engaged to be married, soon, it showed a certain lack of good judgment on his part." The innkeep evenly met Hi'el's stare and carefully watched the larger man's reaction.

"If she wouldn't have become with child, he never would have bothered her again, Hi'el. But you probably know as well as anyone does, that the Sylvanesti are a prejudiced bunch. And I'm sure his father the king wouldn't understand that his eldest son had sired a bastard heir to the throne with a half-breed girl. The child will probably be hunted his or her entire life and suffer the same fate as his mother and all those seen as impure to the Sylvanesti royal bloodline. They'll probably both be killed, sooner or later. It's just a matter of the elves finding the right group of mercanaries to do the job."

Done confessing for the moment, the halfling cast a disgusted look at Jalinda and then took another long drink of his ale. He kept the tankard in his fat-fingered hands and motioned with a derogatory shooing gesture to the female hobbit with one of them. "You may as well go, Jalinda. I have no further use for you right now. In fact, don't bother coming back for awhile. If I should ever have need of you again, I'll let you know, but your turn-coat nature has upset my stomach."

Both anger and hurt created a sheen of unshed tears in the pretty halfling's eyes and she glared at the back of Ghaliver's head. Grabbing her small leather bag from the floor near the bed, she proudly squared her shoulders and opened the door. With a last, sympathetic look at Hi'el, she shook her head in dismay and slammed the door behind her, causing the innkeep to flinch.

~ ~ ~ Releasing the Halfling from his grasp, the Shadoweir intently watched his every move.  Any move to sound an alarm would've triggered an attack. The intent look vanished as Ghaliver explained what he knew.  A look of incomprehension crossed the Silenni's face only to be replaced by pure revulsion at what the Hobbit was telling him.  The Horse-Fey needed time to think, and as Jalinda moved to leave, crossly asked "Jalinda, please wait for me."  A part from his fury at Gillette and the Weremacht, and then his first ever encounter with a Vampire, Hi'el, his equine ears flipped back against his skull, found it hard to think through the fierce rage which coursed through his blood.  The Servant of Mielikki hoarsely voiced the only question he could think of, asking "How... how are you involved?" ~ ~ ~

Jalinda briefly met Hi'el's angry eyes and gave a barely perceptible nod before she left, indicating she had heard him. Ghaliver paid no attention. The short fat man looked despondent and took a hearty swallow of his ale and then stared into the depths of his cup as he grudgingly answering the Shadoweir.

"You have to understand. They said they'd cut off all trade to Westbridge. The prince said he'd make sure none of our caravans got out of the forest." He looked up at Hi'el with a somewhat helpless expression. "We're not that big a town, man. If the royal elves decided we should be wiped off the map, well then, wiped off the map we'd be! And who'd even believe us? And who'd help us? Don't you get it? You can't possibly hope to help that poor girl. You're only one...one....whatever you are. And their numbers alone....eh, you won't listen." He huffed to himself and took another gulp of his drink, seemingly determined to get thoroughly sloshed before noon. "All I did was tell them where to meet Gruug, the gnoll leader. The bargain they struck between them was none of my affair. But I know people, and they knew that I know people, so they used me to get what they wanted...you know? I swear I didn't know the girl was pregnant, and all they told me was that she'd tricked the prince and stolen his property."

The hobbit drained the last dregs of his ale and then wiped his mouth with the back of obe fat hand. He sighed. Then he gave a Hi'el a steady look. "You go be the avenger of Milliikky, horse-man. If that means you cut me down in the process, then so be it. But I did what I did for the good o' the town, not to turn a profit. Just so you know."

~ ~ ~ Equine ears alertly flicking forward, the Silenni intently listened to all the Hairfoot had to say, and began to calm down as the missing pieces fell into place.  Key words from the Halfling's confession 'map, forest, one, meet, Gruug, and people' echoed in Hi'el's mind as he formulated a new plan of action.  And in response to some of what the Innkeeper told him, the Horse-Fey calmly answered "Ghaliver, I may be just one.  But I represent thousands of Druids.  And I am never alone.  Mielikki is with me always.  And it is WE who control the forest, not the Elves."  The zealous Shadoweir started clearing the table in front of the Hobbit, and as he did so resolutely asked, "You may know people, Ghaliver, just not the right ones.  Bring me a map of this area."  The Servant of Mielikki expectantly watched the Innkeeper. ~ ~ ~

Most of what Hi'el said fell on uncaring halfling ears. Ghaliver was already worrying about what he would do when the elves found out he had told this madman about their involvement. He was also plotting how he might be able to take a sudden 'vacation' from Westbridge for awhile. A long while. At the Shadoweir's request for a map, he hefted his squatty form off his stool and waddled over to the large ironwood trunk and paused for a moment to do something with the clasp that held the lid shut. Then the innkeeper raised the heavy lid and began to rummage through the chest's contents. After a few minutes, he returned to the table and laid out a piece of vellum which showed a relatively detailed map of the area.

"Before you even ask, they were supposed to meet Gruug by the North Bridge. I don't know anything more than that." The fat hobbit told him. He returned to the chest and closed the lid and then sat down on the edge of his bed, thinking about his next move.

    TOWN OF WESTBRIDGE

~ ~ ~ While watching the portly Halfling fiddle with the ironwood trunk, Hi'el discretely fished out the five gold pieces they had orginally negotiated, and quietly stacked them on the side of the table.  There could be no denying that the Hobbit had more than earned them with the information he'd provided even though it came at the cost of his soul.  When the Innkeeper unrolled a map of the area on the table, the Silenni slightly relaxed his posture, and as he began scrutinzing the map, preached at the Hairfoot, telling him "Ghaliver, you know, once the Elves have no further use for you, they will probably kill you anyway to cover up any knowledge of their conspiracy with the Gnolls against a defenseless pregnant girl to protect their honor.  And if they do not, here is some more bad news for you."  The Shadoweir, not sure in what language it was written, frowned at the map especially at what he saw along the eastern side of it across the river, and continued warning the Innkeeper, quietly saying "Those Gnolls destroyed a Temple in Dace and likely murdered, I do not know for sure, the clergy of a Goddess called Sune, who were probably just helping with the delivery of the expectant mother's baby.  You will have to live with that on your conscience.  I am not personally familiar with that sect and their ways, and what they would do to someone who helped in the massacre of their people."  The Horse-Fey vaguely recognized some of the structures depicted on the map from during his night flight reconnaissance, as he continued his running diatribe "So I would probably be doing a lot of people a favor by killing you, but then how would you learn from your mistakes and change your ways.  You have a lot to atone for Ghaliver, which is why I am not going to kill you."  The Servant of Mielikki nodded at the information about the North Bridge, having already identified the three spots on the map with structures depicted on the east side of the river located vicinity bamboo groves, and thoughtfully asked "Ghaliver, these structures located on the east and west side of the river near the North Bridge, how far away are they?  Who owns them?  What are they used for?  Oh, and do the 'men' from Red Larch, Jalinda spoke about, have anything to do with this?"  Throughout his intent study of the map and castigation of the Hobbit's actions, the Quested Tracker kept surreptitious tabs on the Hairfoot's facial and body language trying not to crush him under the despair of guilt or further encourage his flight response. ~ ~ ~
