Not only has day length changed but other important parameters such as the composition of the atmosphere seem to have been very different.  Had conditions remained constant, we might never have evolved into the wonderful things we are now, all of which brings up the question, "at what point in our journey from pond scum to the first baptized human did the soul enter into the cytoplasm?"
