Trespassing on Private Property
An infinite distance away, the lights of cars
red shift, blue shift, according to the laws
of Doppler and physics, as their drivers
pass me on the street, driven away by an open gate.
In the pool, I am absolutely still while raindrops
fall around me, and on me, disturbing the clear
surface of the water and clearing my mind
of the disturbing. If a person is still long enough
in warm water, they will die of hypothermia,
the heat sucked from their blood. The coppery taste
of mine on my tongue is sweeter than kisses I do not miss.
Lightning frames the city, illuminating my world.
Surrounded by death, I realize my immortality
and weep with sorrow.
