The only reason this song is here is because Elizabeth A Lawrence mentioned that this song is used twice in An American Werewolf in Paris. The first appearance of this song is in the opening, which slowly becomes ominous before fading out. The second time this song occurs is when the main character first changes into a werewolf.

Of all the songs available, why was this song chosen? The title comes from the phrase "once in a blue moon," which is a fancier way of saying, "It’ll never happen." In a way, it relates to being inflicted with a werewolf’s curse: what are the chances of it happening to you?

Otherwise, the producers of An American Werewolf in Paris could have chosen a better song, since it doesn’t seem to fit the story of a werewolf at all.

I can’t help but to feel sorry about the unnamed couple in this song. Before that, the intro that takes up the first 2:45 minutes of the 6:27 minute long song sets the scenery nicely. The music is dark and quickly paced to the point that you know something bad is going to happen. The lead singer’s voice is a rich purr that fits in well with this song �?if it was translated and performed in English, it wouldn’t have as much of an impact as the Swedish version does.

At a first glance at the English translation, it sounds as if this song is a lyrical version of Little Red Riding Hood. One line repeated at each stanza makes me think this otherwise: "She was carrying the fruit of love" (Garmarna). This makes me suspect that the "maiden" isn’t much of a maiden at all, especially when the page discovers that his maiden was eaten... Along with their unborn child. When the page bewoes his discovery in the last stanza, the all of the instruments except for one drop out, leaving the singer to sing on at a slightly slower scene to emphasize the hopelessness of his condition. This, out of all of the werewolf songs that I know of, has to be the most effective song: it’s dark, serious, and hauntingly beautiful.

Unfortunately with this song, I was only able to get my hands on Chip Ritter’s version, not the original by Warren Zevon. The beat of this song is slow and soothing �?quite the opposite of what someone would expect for a werewolf song. The lyrics themselves are rather silly, as if the writer can tell �?or perhaps knows �?who the various werewolves in London are, and what they’re doing. The best part, though, is the last stanza with the Lon Chaney Jr. reference to the movie, The Wolfman. Unfortunately, this reference was removed in Chip Ritter’s remake. This song is stressing the point that werewolves look and act like humans, and can be seen doing human-things such as eating Chinese food and, in Chip Ritter’s remake, drink Budweiser beer.
