The Krow's Descent into Darkness

As he stands on the edge of the roof, the Krow lights up a cigerette. As the "caw" in the distance grows closer, he lifts his arm slowly, as a black bird nears him. Even at his new home, he still feels like an outcast, an outsider.
Many of them have been so nice to me, he thinks, told me their stories, treated me as one of them. "Very well, then." he mutters aloud as the bird perches on his arm. He reaches out to the others in the castle with his mind, about to broadcast his tale. A tale of lust and beauty. A tale of love and hate. A tale of murder and deception. Prepare for the descent into darkness........

Twas the year 1778, and I was a day away from my 18th birthday. I awoke from my sleep at dawn, excited for my family, friends, and most of all, myself. It was planned that the day I turned 18, I would move away to the university, to learn more in the new science of chemistry, to discover new ideas and theories. As a gift, my father left rolling papers and tobacco on my nightstand, since I have always been fond of smoking.
As I came home from getting food from the market later that evening, my family greeted me at our door, and put a blindfold over my eyes. They led me to the carraige, telling me nothing. After about 30 minutes, we must have arrived at our destination, for the carriage stopped abruptly. Walking blindly, my brother led me towards a smell of a feast, a dinner. As the smell of wine and chicken grew closer, I started to hear voices, both familiar and new. Finally, they tore off my blindfold, and I was standing in the center of a huge ballroom, women in beautiful dresses, and men in their best suits. I was shocked even more as they all shouted in unison, "Surprise!"
People greeted me all night, even I shyed off to the sides. Eventually my eyes met with the most beautiful, radiant green eyes, belonging to a woman of about 5'6. Her ebony hair flowed down the sides of her face, splashing as it struck her bare shoulders. Her black dress emphasized her generous breasts, and her skin was milky white, almost the color of porcelian. Never have I saw such beauty, and I was drawn to her as if she was a magnet. She knew I was looking at her, but I couldn't help but stare. She started to walk closer to me. She was even more beautiful up close, as I clumsly tried to start conversation, offering her an hors d'oerve. "My name is Alisa. What's Your name?"
"My name is Steven." I blurted out, my confidence rising. "Would you like to go for a walk?" Alisa answed yes, and I led her to the door. Outside I offered her a cigerette, which she accepted. We walked for about a mile, making idle coversation and telling stories. She smoked her cigerette, almost down to where I was afraid she would burn her fingers, and tossed the remainder onto the cobblestone road.
"What I am going to show and tell you next is beyond your possible imagination." As she started to talk of things to come, I watched as her pearly white teeth began to change. Her canines grew to points, while I slowly stepped backward and fell over a stone.
"Do not be afraid, my dear. I am what mortals tend to call a vampire. I cannot be described in human terms, so they use that word. I'm not going to hurt you." She talked of death, and how it wasn't important, how it wasn't final. She told me of immortality and benefits of not aging. Finally, she asked me if I would like this gift. Amazingly, I didn't run off into the night. This appealed to me, not having to worry about dying or getting old. I accepted her offer, and she told me to follow her. As if in a trance, I followed her every step, watching her as if she were gliding across the grass. Finally, we arrived at a large mansion, almost a castle.
Once inside, she told me to sit and wait. She disappeared upstairs, as I sat and watched. While I waited for her return, I picked up the document with the months happenings. One story in particular interested me: A convict named Jared Blackstone had escaped an insane isylum, and hasn't been found yet. Before I could finish the story, a maid came up and told me that Alisa was now ready for me. As she talked, I noticed the maid had sharp teeth as well. I followed her up the stairs. We turned and she left me at a blood red door, a door with many locks. I turned the knob slowly, seeing if it was unlocked. It was. I pushed the door gently, and opened it.
The walls were purple and red, and the ceiling was an unnatural color of black. Sitting on a bed in the corner was Alisa. She had changed from her black dress to black leather undergarments. She told me to sit next to her, patting the bed. As I sat down, she unbuttened my shirt and took it off. She leaned into a kiss, and I did not back away. We made love passionatly for hours, until finally she leaned toward my neck. Her fangs slowly peirced my skin, as I felt the warm fluid stream down my neck. Her lips formed a suction upon my neck, draining my very lifeforce away. As I started to go limp, she slit her wrist with her black fingernail. Raising her arm to my lips, I took in the elixer, the drink of eternal life, or death as some would say. I felt power I have never known surge though my viens. I drank until she stopped me, until she was weak. She opened a door, pulling out a very wide casket. As she opened the lid, she told me to lie down inside, which I did.
"Newly turned must sleep with me the first night......" She giggled. Our bare bodies nuzzled close to each other, very close. As the lid shut, I lost conscienceness. Hearing the creaking of the wood, I awoke, seeing things like I never saw them before. The wall was no longer a wall... it was composed of tiny atoms, all linked to each other throughout the room. Everything was like this. For about the first hour, I stumbled over objects, until I finally got used to it. I finally came to the realization that I left my family at the ball, and I cried out for Alisa.
She told me not to worry, because another one of her children, Jacklyn, informed them that she was from the university, and I was getting an early start on my journey. I asked to meet Jacklyn, but Alisa told me she had to rest, for Jacklyn had just made her first "child", and she was very weak. Alisa told me I must go say goodbye to my family, because I may never see them again. She pulled me into a deep passionate kiss, not knowing this was the last time we would see each other moving.
I felt a new power surge through me as I walked home. As the wind picked up, I felt also felt a hunger in me, one i've never known. I tried to ignore it, but by the time I reached my former house, it was too intense to ignore. My father answered the door in his robe, half awake. "Steve, is that you?" I explained that I just wanted to see them once more before I left for the university. As the pain grew, I had to excuse my self and I said goodbye.
Outside, I felt the pain grow to immense preportions. I heard something move in the bush, and instictivly I was there in less than a second. It was a person. Not even realizing what I was doing, I lowered my mouth to there neck, and drew blood. I knew I should stop, but I couldn't. When I had eventually quenched my thirst. I saw that the body had gone limp. My heart had dropped. The first kill is always the hardest. It was a bit harder for me. I took a candle out of my coat pocket and struck a match. In the candlelight, with the shadows jumping over her face, I staggered back. The candle fell out of my hand and went out. Even in the dark, I could see the shape of my sister Sarah's face. I ran. That night I did nothing but running. I tried to outrun the heavy grief, but as fast as I was, it was always on top of me. I finally collapsed onto my knees. I pulled a pocket knife from my pocket. As the blade slit my wrists, a few drops of blood came out, but then the wound sealed. I let a noise from my lungs, a noise that would send shivers down your spine, cause your hair to stand on end, hell, you'd probably wet yourself.
It was nearing dawn, and I getting tired. I found my way to the town clock tower. As I climbed the stairs, I heard commotion in the streets, but I did not care. I lifted up a spare bell, and fell asleep underneath.
The next night, the streets were crawling with people. I did not care. I walked by most of them, and they didn't even know I was there. Time flew by for me, and before I knew it, it was two weeks before I made it back to my new home. Amazingly, I found the mansion with ease. As I stood outside the door, I knew something was wrong. I did not want to enter my home. The pain from the night before had returned to me, and I was full of sorrow and rage. I pushed open the door with all my might, sending the wood crashing into the wall. Blood covered the place. It was dripping down the walls, and pooling onto the floor. The maid was slumped in the corner, a chair leg through her chest. Other vampires I had met the first night were strewn about, and I heard a huge crash from upstairs. I saw a blond-haired vampire's head fly out of Alisa's room, smashing against the wall. I rushed in there to see a dark-haired vampire leaning over Alisa's bed. He was holding an axe in his hands, and was about to bring it down. Before I even realized it, I was flying across the room. My foot connected with the back of his neck, and he slumped to the floor.
Alisa was tied to the bed, with silver stakes embedded around her heart, and one wooden one in the center. I pulled them out, but it was to no avail. She was already dead. The vampire behind me stood up. "The name's Jared. I bet Jacki is glad she turned me." He said, cracking his neck and laughing. I saw the black of his heart though his skin. I felt the rage I would become so familliar with surge through my veins. Before he could move, I launched the axe into his midsection. He looked down, and tried to pull it out. I turned around, crying over Alisa. My tears ran red, and dropped into the wounds of my sire. Behind me, Jared escaped from the mansion, overturning a lamp in the process. The flames leaped up and devoured the wall. As I looked around in complete horror, I took Alisa from the bed and dived through the window. Outside, Jared was nowhere to be found, so I made it my personal vendetta to wreak vengeance upon him. To track him to the ends of the earth. But I was an ordinary vampire, only a couple of weeks old. Looking upon Alisa's form in my arms, I began to drink her blood. I drank until there was no more. The veins in my arms made my muscles ripple, I felt my body change. All the imperfections gone. The extra weight in my stomach had turned into hard muscle. I felt the power of a master vampire run through me. I then knew that Jared's days were numbered. Above me I heard a fluttering noise, that of a crow's wings. It descended down, landing upon my shoulder. Without even trying brush it away, I knew that it would just come back. Every creature has a symbol, mine would forever be the Krow.......

Twas the year 1855, and I had returned from watching the carnage of the Civil War firsthand. Stupid humans. I came back to the spot where many years ago Alisa's mansion had burned to the ground. After the body of my sister was found, my family had moved away. The last of my family, my brother Thomas had just died from ammonia. He was 88. I visited him the day he died. As he looked up to the window, a bird flew in and landed on his bed. When he looked up, he saw me. As his life began to slip away I gave him understanding of what I am and why I still look young. He then passed on.
I looked thru the remains of the fire, looking for any signs of the criminally insane Jared Blackstone. Over the years, he had created many a vampire with his black blood. I had tracked him down many times, and slew his brethren of the blackest soul. He had started a clan after himself, Clan Black Soul, a clan I once joined just to try to eliminate this pure evil. These were the evilest creatures you could imagine. They killed without regret, and turned humans into their evil clan. Jared had taught these creatures well, but they were not as strong as him. Every time I came across him, he just ordered his children upon me, and vanished. By the time I had finished with his clan, he was nowhere to be found.
Now I had tracked him back to Stockbridge, my original home. I bent over and picked up a old and brittle axe, charred and fragile. As I held onto it, I felt the memory of where I first spilled his blood, over 75 years ago. The wind picked up, blowing my long black hair about my face, my coat billowing around me.
"Not many people around at this time of night" The sweetest voice I would ever hear entered my ears. I can still hear it to this day. I turned around and saw the cutest face ever, short black hair, spiked a little bit. She stood at about 5'7", only a couple inches shorter than me. "What are you doing?"
I stood in place for a second, and then just said I was a visitor in the town, and I was curious about the ruins. She introduced herself as Megan, and I told her my human name. We talked for a while, and she said she was just about to close the museum where she kept the displays clean. She asked me if I would like a tour of the place, and I agreed.
Her favorite part was the sword display. She even told me worked with the blacksmith sometimes, and she had learned much about making blades, but her mother was never to find out. She shrieked as a crow descended through the open window. I told her to hush, and walked over to it and picked up. She stared in amazement. I walked closer to her, and she backed up, scared of the bird. "Its just a living being, like us. It won't harm you, I promise." She stood still as I walked over to her and gently placed the bird on her shoulder. "I am good with birds," I said. She looked astounded, that I had such control over the crow.
Over the next few weeks, we met near the musuem and saw each other in private. I have never felt this way about a mortal, even when I was a mortal. I believe she felt the same way. One night I was nearing the musuem, contemplating telling her of what I am, and offering the gift to her. She emerged from the back door carrying a package. She told me it was a gift. I opened it, it was a sword. A style of sword from the ninja clans of japan. The sheath and 9" handle were red, wrapped in black nylon. The hilt was gold, connecting to a 27" silver blade. Halfway up the blade, was an engraved symbol of a crow, burnt black. At the very bottom of the handle, engraved was "For Eternity" I have never actually needed a weapon, but I took it in extreme gratitude. I returned my face to hers, which was waiting for a reaction. I told her I love it and her, and decided I needed to show her the truth tonight.
Megan brought me to her house, because she wanted to introduce me to her mother, Karen. I followed her home, and her mother answered the door.
"Mom, this is Steve, the guy I've been telling you about." Her mother had a look of confusion. "This can't be Steve," she said, "Steve came over about 15 minutes ago. I told him you'd be back soon, and invited him in. He's right in the living room. The moment she said that, a chair flew across the room and struck Karen. Upon impact, the chair shattered, and Karen was sent into the wall. A peice of wood had peirced her juggular, and blood flowed down the front of her blouse. Megan rushed into the house, leaving me at the doorway. At that moment, Jared stepped out from shadows and grabbed her.
"Invite me in!" I yelled to Karen, who was barely alive. I could do nothing, stranded at the doorstep. Megan had a puzzled/horrified look on her face as Jared began to implant his fangs into her neck. Jared drank the innocent blood of my Megan, and then proceeded to slit his own wrist. He poured his blood into her mouth, infesting her pure blood with his concentrated evil. As Karen's soul passed from her body, I rushed through the door, pulling the gift sword from its sheath. As the blade swiftly lowered through his neck, I felt the power of myself being emitted through the blade. Before he even knew what happened, his head was separate from his body.
The process to turning Megan was only half way completed, and she would die, without finishing it. I cut my wrist with the sword and lowered my arm to her lips. Her eyelashes fluttered slightly as my blood mixed with the evil blood in her veins. As the process finished, I laid her on her bed. I did not know what was to become of her, and stared at the sword. The weapon had become an extension of myself.
Megan awoke the next night in the old clocktower I spent my first night outside the mansion. I stared into her eyes, seeing a distant look... a look of betrayal. She took off without saying a word. The calling of the crow returned, once again announcing that I am once again an outcast.
Over the past century, Megan and I have come across each others paths, with few words to say. I have made it my mission to track down all the vampire's Jared had made and destroy them, to eliminate these evil creatures. I don't know what I am going to do when it comes down to just Megan................

The Krow stands up and tosses the cigerette butt over the side of the castle, the ashes spiraling downward. As he looks at the bottom of his sword, his heart pains remembering Sarah, Alisa and Megan. This is how it will be. "For Eternity." He heads inside as the bird caws once more.
