One Step Backward can be good

Many users have installed the “do all Utilities?Norton and\or  McAfee on their computers. They are very good programs. They do many things. In my view they try and do to many things.
Many of the functions of the operating system must move through these utilities slowing the systems down, in many cases depending on settings not allowing certain functions to be used, or at least requiring permissions. For my taste they are a drag on the system. I will not let one bloated inefficient application basically dominate my system.

Choosing little programs in place of one big program.

1. I run my system through a router and a cable modem.
The router provides a “hardware firewall?and I have my XP home firewall turned on.

2. I use AVG free as my protection against Virus and Trojan horses and it also screens my emails.

3. I use the Beta 2 Microsoft antispyware “Windows defender?and Spybot to guard against and to keep out unwanted spyware.

4. For cleanups I use the Beta 2,  and spybot, along with a product called CCleaner.(free)

5. I do my computer maintenance with a utility called FixIt by Ontrack software.(not free) in combination with the aforementioned programs.

(note:  I also use Spybot to immunize my computer against the spyware known to it.)

These small programs “do what they do?unlike the “All in one systems?which have to compromise so they can “do all things?/DIV>
All of these programs are separate and I can use them in different combinations in different ways. Their functionality is a mouse click away, they are highly targeted in their application, low in overhead, and free.(other than FixIt). I use them as required without having to use a huge system like Norton or McAfee which are bloated and tell me what to do as opposed to the other way around.

Everyone I know who has removed the big Utilities has found their machines to run faster, more efficiently, less problems.

To date I have not had one computer Virus or Trojan Horse on this machine and by following the same target specific philosophy I have only had one virus on my system since 1985, And that was caused by Operator Error ,, ME!!!! ,, Duh!!!!!!!
