Besides being an antiseptic food, honey is a source of energy, a nerve tonic and the only heart stimulant which is not a drug. It also inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria in the digestive tract. Some holistic vets recommend feeding honey to puppies and kittens with their milk, and to sick dogs.
Raw, unpasteurized honey is not recommended for human infants because it may lead to botulism because of infants' immature digestion. Although there have been warnings about giving raw honey to puppies, there have been no known cases of illness resulting from this. It is thought the warnings come from an assumption that all infants, human and canine, are at risk; forgetting they are entirely different.
