A few things you need to know before bringing a ferret home.

Okay so you've done your homework and made your decision to add one of these  creatures into your family.

If you havent done your homework yet read up on these delightful but a real handfuls of energy here on our

What Makes a Ferret Page.

Ferret proof your home and know it really isn't very ferret proof.... these little fun guys are always looking for a way to have fun, usually meaning trouble :)
Guests , Children and doors are dangerous to our fuzzies.

Remember if they can get their head into it, they can get their body through it too!

see House Proofing

Cages preferably a large one you can always section it off to make it smaller but you wont be able to make it larger. Some you can join together to make them larger but its an expensive way to do it.
Why is larger better ? Ferret Math is NOT a myth

Food have you looked around to see what is available to you in your area. If you cant find a good quality ferret food there are online ferret/pet stores that you can order most quality brands. Remember if there is fish in the food you will get smelly poops.
Take a look at my ferret food breakdown.

Litter boxes and litter. High backed and large are best but here we use several smaller litter trays that are easy to get in and out of the cage without having to pull it apart. After trying many different sorts of litter we are now using Alfalfa Rabbit Pellets for several reasons...... if the ferrets digest some it wont harm them, they put of a pleasant smell and they are cheap.

Water bottles or dishes ? At our house water bottles are for drinking from water dishes are for swimming in. We have the heavy ceramic dishes for their food.

Bedding. Every ferret loves a hammock and they come in all shapes and sizes we have a large hammy, a square hanging cube and hanging sleep sacks as well as a sleep sack for on the floor. They love to dig and burrow into the sleepy sack and snuggle away from prying eyes whilst feeling safe and secure.

Treats. Raisins, Banana no more than 2 pieces a day.  Ferretvite, Ferretone one or the other given daily.
See Fuzzy Recipes for Treats

Meds to have on hand Ferretlax for treatment of hairballs, FerretRX for sniffles and colds, Ferretvite and Ferretone given as treats and added to Duck Soup.

our Fuzzy First-aid kit.

Toys. Cardboard boxes, Paper grocery sack, Plastic grocery bags with both ends cut open (under supervision), Plastic dryer vents, Digging boxes ie cardboard box or plastic crate  with 6 - 10lb of rice(not instant) dumped into it, Hard rubber or plastic balls, Cat toys made of hard plastic, Whiffle balls, babies toys ie keys and terry cloth squeakies.
