do they need to be cleaned often? what do you do? like a cat? we had an old tomcat that always had black dirty ears. we would use babyoil to smother the mites and clean the next day gently with a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcolhol to disinfect.

I guess I do the ferrets every month or every second month ,
I use a ferret friendly ear cleaning solution in a pinch I will use a saline solution,
I put a little on a cotton ear bud and run it around the ear.
I never stick it in the ear canal.

I wouldnt smother with anything and I wouldnt use rubbing alcohol as it would dry out the skin.

After getting Gracie I would never put anything in their ears unless I was told to by the vet.
Her ears were impacted that bad that it put pressure on her brain, she is deaf in one ear
and carries her head tilted to the side all the time.

I do my ferrets at nail trimming time, I use slightly warmed (tepid) water on a cotton tip
and wipe the crevices of their ears on the outside of the ear, 2 to 4 cotton tips per ferret.

Some people use mineral oil, baby oil or Olive oil. What do you use ?

If their ears are dirty or have ear wax build up you will need a ferret safe ear cleaning solution.
Loosen any wax or debris by putting a few drops of ear cleaning fluid in the ear (warm the solution in your hand first), massage gently around the base of its ear then clean with a cotton swab and wipe away any excess.

Remember ...only clean as far as you can see! Do not push the cotton tip in the ear canal, you might pack the ear wax in tighter or worse damage the ear drum.
and Dont reuse cotton tips or swabs on other ferrets, incase of spreading infection or ear mites.

Please Note : If your ferret's ears have a dark wax, are smelly or have coffee granule type dirt he needs to see the vet as he may have and ear infection , ear mites or both.

I also use warmed water and cottontips. Also give them a wipe with a face washer when I give the ferrets a bath

I also use a moistened cotton swab. But I put it in my trusty cordless 24 volt drill, then I can CLEAN SOME EARS!!!!

Just kidding, just kidding....lol I thought I would start the day with a chuckle....lol

I just use a moistened cotton swab and clean the outer parts of the ear. I ususally do this on bath day, and periodically if they need it. For the most part however, I haven't had too many dirty ears over the past few years.

I really like Bevs method of using olive oil and letting the other ferrets do all the work for her....lol

Right now I use a ferret ear cleaner, but when that's gone I'm going to switch to olive oil.  I put a few drops in their ears then I massage the ear from the outside, over the ear canal.  This helps push the wax out. Next I wipe the ear with a cottonball, then I use a q-tip for the crevasses.

I use cleaner and q-tips... i feel so bad now, i never thought of warming the cleaner. maybe thats why they wiggle so much. the cleaner couldnt be THAT cold, we don't have a/c and i have to keep the house warm on the colder days, so it might just be the cleaner period (that bugs them). ((hot here in florida))

At the moment I'm using a little pack of ferret ear swabs made by totally ferret. I bought it from 'shopherandsave' (username) on ebay. Most of our fuzzbutts clean each others ears, so I do this about once a week on each. It's a cotton bud, that when you crack on of the ends, some cleaning liquid fills up the other bud. I love them, they're easy to use and easy to clean up.
