What to do when your weight loss plan isn't working.

Have you ever had one of those days when things just didn't go your way? Everything that could go wrong does go wrong. Every bit of progress is overshadowed by something else that just makes you want to give up?

Nobody is imune from having one of those days. The key is to get through it with the least amount of damage to your self image and prepare for a fresh start with as much optimism you can muster.

So what do you do when your weight loss efforts are just not working for you?

Since your self image dictates what you are capable of in terms of weight loss and every other aspect of your life, it is important that on days like that you do not force yourself to get results at the cost of incredible frustration.

Frustration is very damaging because it breeds feelings of helplessness. If you are to be in control of your life, helplessness cannot be part of your makeup.

So if you're having a bad day, write it off. Take a time-out for the day to remove the pressure of having to perform when you are not at your best. This is the time to reflect on how far you've come.

I know what you're thinking. If you haven't lost any weight yet, how can you reflect on how far you've come. But you did make progress, you're just not giving yourself any credit.

Perhaps you've gained a lot more knowledge about weight loss. Perhaps you got started in some way or another, and even if the results don't show yet, having taken some form of action is a big step. So praise yourself for doing it.

Then sit back and relax. Daydream about the day when you will reach your weight loss goal. This will help you shift your focus in a positive way instead of the self defeating way frustration does.

Don't allow yourself to entertain thoughts like 'What's the use' or the like. Just because you may be having an off day, it doesn't mean you have to fall back on old habits.

Count your blessings instead and reflect on the good reason why you want to lose weight in the first place.

On a day like that (mind you this applies to every day of your life too) it is very important to filter out the people who don't support you. Eliminate the people in your life who make those 'innocent' jokes or 'harmless' comments that still get to you even though you are trying to put on a brave face. You can't afford to have anybody in your life who will sabotage your efforts to lose weight even if they do it inadvertently.

If those people happen to be members of your family, let them know that their comments affect you in a negative way and ask them to help you instead by supporting the choices you need to make in order to lose weight.

Now that you've allowed to take the time off from weight loss and feel okay about it, it's time to decide how long your break will be and when will you start anew.

If you follow these simple steps, you will find that there will be fewer and fewer off days, and before you know it YOU WILL get to the finish line. And believe me, the closer you get to that finish line, the more people you will find are there to help you and cheer you on.
