Paul credits his wife, Jane ?also a Success Story ?/FONT> and Weight Watchers for saving his life. See how their new eating and exercise habits have them looking forward to a long, healthy life together.

When we celebrated our 27th anniversary in 1998, my wife Jane and I were looking forward to the years ahead. But the pictures of the anniversary party gave us some food for thought.

We were both very overweight. I was 170 pounds when we were married and now weighed 214.4 pounds. My lovely wife went from 128 to 247.2 pounds. She laid the pictures out in front of me and said, "We need to do something about this. I can't continue to live like this." As wives of 27 years often do, she wore me down eventually! In August 1998 we began our journey together with Weight Watchers.

The plan helped us alter our lifestyles tremendously. Neither of us, in the beginning, understood the relationship between carbohydrates, protein and fats, and how a balance must be met in those areas. Neither of us understood the importance of water and exercise. We didn't understand the concept of journaling and how important it is to reflect on where you've been and where you're going.

It was learning all these things that made the plan work for us. Now, three years later, we are both lifetime members ?I have lost 55 pounds, and my wife has lost 109.6. I now exercise, pack my lunch, and countPOINTS®. Frankly, I'm in the best shape I have ever been in my life (I was 49 years old when I started attending meetings).

Last spring, the company I work for offered me a free wellness physical. I will never forget the day of the exam. One part was an EKG stress test ?this is where I knew I would shine because of the good shape I was in. I did very well, but suddenly, the technician stopped and asked if I had any problems breathing, or chest pains. I said no and then got the shock of my life: He said I had a blood flow problem to my heart and suggested I see a cardiologist immediately.

The next morning, I did, and the bottom line was that I needed bypass surgery. My doctor said that my great health and exercising and eating habits had helped me cheat death.

So, literally and figuratively, my wife and Weight Watchers saved my life. My recovery process was quick because of my excellent health. When I was about to be discharged, a dietician came into the room to instruct me on a "heart sensible" diet. I looked at her and said, "Ma'am, I am a lifetime member of Weight Watchers and have been following the plan religiously for three years."

She closed her book and said there was no reason for her to talk to me since I already knew what to do! To me, this is the ultimate testimony of the power of Weight Watchers.
