Sports Drinks or Water?
A cold drink on a hot day or after game of tennis or basketball can really quench your thirst. But what should you drink: water or a sports drink?
Hands down, water is one of the best fluids to drink for hydration. Kids just don't need the calories in sports drinks, when involved in low-intensity activity for short periods of time.
There are a couple of times when sports drinks or fruit-flavoured beverages and juices can help performance. Here's the deal:
If you exercise hard for one hour or more, alternating a sports drink with water (drink 1 sports drink and then the same amount of water) can keep you hydrated and performing your best.
If you skipped a meal or haven't eaten in a couple of hours and don't have any food available, sports drinks can prevent you from burning your last bit of energy when you're working out or competing. Make sure to eat a healthy meal after your event or session!
