Star, pleanty of ppl have tapered off of methadone
but in order to be successful you have to do it for the right reason and as much
as I can relate to you saying how screwed up the clinics are in philly that is
still not the right reason. You have to be ready mentally and physically, I
don't know how long you took to get to 3mg but if you did it slowly and want to
get off because you believe that you are ready, I would recommend switching to
buprenorphine and you can do that in the doctor's office and being on 3mg of
methadone you are an excellent candidate but you can also be on maintenance
using bup.

Hey Cornflakegirl, First off welcome to HofH..you'll fine a great group of people grace this internet space sharing a vast range of experinces. I think you'll probably get different responses to this question..mine being that I've been on the program (this time) for 6-7 years and am still not ready to come off. Have tried tapering down a few times but everytime I reach a certain point the cravings come back hard and strong. More of a mental thing for me. As was mentioned the 'reason' for coming off is key..should be because you are ready and no other. Sounds like you're serious and you've tapered down well enough (congrats). As you mentioned you'd stay on in forever just to be safe..except for the clinics..tells me perrhaps you have doubts. Buprenorphine could be just the safety net you're looking for..a safe way to step off of methadone and onto something that would allow you to break with the program pattern. As Claude said you can get the perscription from a Doctor and there's no clinic hassle to go with it. To answer your question specifically.."Has anyone ever succesfully gotten off this stuff?" Yes there are people who have done so. Any members care to share if they've done so successfully? Here's a Buprenorphine locator for you to look at should you be interested: And a thread started here by a member who made the switch from Methadone to Buprenorphine..has lot's of good questions a answers so you can get the feel for it: Take care and if you need to know anything else just ask..between us all there are sure to be some answers..maybe not absolutes..but answers. Bull,
being on 3mg and stopping at that point you will still have w/d no it won't be
the same as stopping at 50 or 100 etc. but some can do it at 3 mg and some can't
everyone is different and reacts differently. I knew a fella stuck on 1mg for
several years he finally was able to get off but he had to cut it in half and
then in half again and that worked for him.

Hi again Cornflakegirl: Found this article that speaks to your question you may find it helpful: From a Dctors Q&A site: Odus: Should counselors start a patient's treatment with the goal of eventually being totally drug free, including free of methadone? Dr. Dole: I think that has been a very serious misunderstanding from the beginning. The goal is NOT abstinence; the goal is to become functional. The data collected over the years has shown that abstinence is an unlikely goal. It is a terrible mistake to put someone in the position of either eventually becoming abstinent or becoming a failure. I am very sorry to hear that many clinics continue to do just that. Unfortunately, that is a philosophy at many clinics. They are willing to "put up with" maintenance in the short term, but they feel that a patient isn't really "cured" unless they are abstinent. |

I will be able to answer your question,hopefully.I am at 20 mlg today(tues.2/22),by Sunday(2/27) I will be off the mdone. I have been on it for the past 16 mos. I can keep you posted of my progress-that is the best I can do,besides staying clean and sober.The highest I got was 90 mlg. and it hasn't been that long as far as your concerned but,that is the best help I can give-my experience,strength and hope.I wouldn't get off it if I didn't feel I could do it.I was hoping to come off it slower but, my insurance expired-its' been 14 mos. since I used,I have been working my program so I know I'm not alone-I can use all the words of encouragement possible.I hope this will help. |

Cornflakegirl, This is not opinion,but,personal experiance. I was on Methadone for 12yrs. My dose was 100mgs. a day. I got off finally in 1990, and have been clean and sober ever since. Although it took years to make the adjustment. I have a good life today. My health has returned. So it is posible. I`m gratiful that i didn`t get around people who believe there is a pill or medication for everything. I may have been caught up in this forever. Good luck |

Hey hun, Phillygirl here and I have 5 years clean and sober and 3years clean off the methadone. I have a truly great life with the ups and downs like anyone else. I just handle the my decisions differently now. I don't pick up. It was hard sometimes and still is but this is better than anything I have ever expierienced. I was on 180mg when I started meth and I tried to taper off the wrong way a bunch of times when I would get fed up with the clinic. So I would come down 10mg a week until I got deathly ill and had to go back up. I was always ready to come off at 160 per say and when I got down to 50 my mind wasn't so sure anymore. lol Then I really got honest with myself and my counselor and we went down at a safe and reasonable rate for me. Everyone is different in their needs. Just don't go down to quick and make sure you stay on the doses you come down to to stay on them for a couple weeks to get use to them before you come down again. So yes I am still off methadone 3 years later and haven't used anything mind altering. Love and thoughts Phillygirl |
