There is a newly FDA approved treatment for Heroin and other opiate withdrawal. It's call Suboxone. Suboxone is a sublingual buprenophine tablet. It works very well to allow you to detox comfortably.
If you're interested, please send any questions to me. I am an addiction medicine physician who is licensed to provide such treatment.
Sincerely,
Joel Nathan, MD

My daughter is 19 years old and trying to detox. She has been using heroin for almost 2 years now. She did 90 days in county jail. Got out and 2 weeks later she was back to getting high. She has been to a rehab for 2 weeks then a three quarter house. She goes for 3 months stops and starts again. She has stolen, lied you know the story and our whole family is stressed out and all thinking some magic thing will come and make it all better. I am a recovering alcholic and use to do cocaine. I don't do anything anymore but had friend that were into heroin and lost 6 of the 2 in there early 20's I can't talk to her. I know I am not objective and she is so lost. She has worn out anywhere to turn to and is looking at jail again. For not going to the drug test. The bottom line is she has given up on herself I need advice a friend, someone not involved I have written to people from heritics of heroin no one ever answers. Please answer. I need help. My name is Colleen Davis. I am 45. I read about Buprenorphine the psychiatrists won't even touch it. I have Amy in counseling they gave her paxil. WOW what the hell is that? please write me , something, pass my email on to anyone else who is willing to be a friend. [email protected]

hello, my name is tony. i am a 21 year old ex- heroin addict. i was messed up like your daughter when i was her age. i was at university of delaware and was heavy into heroin. i was extremely addicted and screwing up everywhere. i lied and cheated and did what addicts do. lucky enough for me i am really smart and was able to maintain a 3.8 gpa becasue i would just shoot dope, go to class , shoot dope and study. that was my life. eventually i got sick and tired of being an addict and checked myself into rehab. a big move for a 19 year old. i went ot hazelden in minneaplis and then went to a halfway house in minneapolis. that is where my disease caught back up with me. i used and got kicked out of my half way house. i was off to the races again. i moved back to delaware and used and lived with my parents and just lied and stole and shot dope. eventually with the help of friends who are drug addicts i got a life outside of drugs. i think that is important. sober people and normal peopl are differnt. people my age dont like sober people i think. your daughter needs to hang out with good friends and get hobbie and fill her day with actyivities becasue boredom in an addicts worst enemy. seriously. your daughter soounds like my friend who got arrested and has serious problems stopping. some people have a harder time than others. YOUR DAUGHTER NEEDS TO GET ON EITHER METHADONE OR BUPEFORINE. it is the only way she will stay sober at her age. the urge to use and the thoughts of using are too much for her. the methadone is her only hope. she will not have these urges and she will be able to get a life, which is what will help her stay sober own the road. methadone is controversial especially for a young girl like your daughter. but take my advice i am experience and smart. methadone is her best bet. it will keep her off heroin and give her a good shot to turn her life around. i was able to get off dope becaue i was lucky i transferred to Columbia in NYC and study art history. my life is great. i am not sober. i go to bars and smoke weed ever once and a while but its cool, at least i am not doing heroin. and i think that that is what you need to look for in your daughter. just get her off of the heroin it is a killer as you know. it kills lives relationships and everything it touches. good luck and email me back if you have any questions. i have good ideas and experience adn i am her contemorary. i am 21 now.\
Sincerely,
Tony

Hi Joel, I am a new member, writing in from Australia, where bup has been around for a while as a withdrawl method. I have only just found out about it and am to start using it tomorrow. Despite much information from my GP, who as far as I know has absolutely no idea about heroin use from a personal perspective, I have no info as to what to expect, I mean really expect. I have been searching the web for a couple of nights, trying to find a message board with someone's story, anyone who has been through it and can honestly tell me what it will be like. Do you know? Does anyone out there? I'm nervous, but sort of excited , that this may be a hell of a lot easier than my previous attempts at stopping. I've done it on my own twice, not a great deal of fun and only succesful to a point (obviously) but I'm pretty much ready for the real thing this time. Kind of sad, it's been fun although once it becomes disfunctional the joy goes. So, if you or anyone else can fillme in on the process and what my body should expect, I willbe very greatful. I'm happy to provide a diary of ramblings as the withdrawl goes on. cheers
LCH

Hi Sleepy,

The first visit to the doctor costs about 175 cash. Lot's of doctors will not accept any kind of insurance. Then you must go back for visits every 2 weeks 75 bucks a pop. Then you have the UA test, range from 30 to 100 bucks. At least once a month on the UAs. Then you have the medication for 60 8mg pills it is 300 bucks. As you can see it is expensive, but in my opinion better than going to a clinic which IS cheaper, though more dehumanizing than a visit to a private doctor. Choice is yours. I find suboxone a miracle drug and worth every penny. Good luck with your choice in treatment/detox. <>< Peace

The Buprenorphine works well. Doctors vary in their experience with the drug. In New York State, where I practice, there is a website that talks about buprenorphine: http://www.oasas.state.ny.us/AdMed/meds/buprenorphine.htm. If you'd like more information , please let me know. My website is www.joelnathanmd.com .
