This is an excellent site to review information, add information and store information to look at. We are lucky to have it here.

Well I was hoping for more discussion concerning neolithic life style and general "survival" trends.

In my opinion DISCUSSING neolithic life styles and general survival trends are for the armchair survival people who have an interest in exploring the possibility that someday maybe they might decide to try playing that idea. This board was put together by people who have been there and done it and want to share valuble life saving information for the person or people who may find themselves in  a survival situation and really need this information to save their lives.

Think so?

Well I can tell you that the lean to that is described in most army manuals will not work  but yet it is still on this site.

I guess I am the only one who has actually made an expedient shelter that turned rain. Because if your still pushing that information you have never spent the night in one.

In my opinion discussion is one of the ways you hone your knowledge and skills. If you will go through most survival manuals you will find some good info and some nonsense.

Now wouldn't it be better to talk about our experiances just in case your stuck in a freezing rain sometime and have the experiance of someone who has been stuck in a similer situation?

Or perhaps Grey Wolf you know things that I would like to know that will only come out with some discussion. You might be sitting on a little information that would be valuable to me that seems so common to you that it never gets posted.

I would say we all have different experiances that would be valuable to each other even if we have been through the same things.

Well I will be 55 in a few days so if you have lived in the woods since you were six I can definetly learn from you.

But even if you haven't I can learn from you. that is what discussion is about.

We are all wooly guys I guess. But a discussion always brings stuff that you didn't know that you knew or some new thing from someone else.

I was raised on a farm in a swamp without electricity and have some experiance with neolithic/ primitive camping.

I am hardly an expert and now I do not get out like I did. I started doing the primitive camping to teach my kids to be self reliant and use things around them to their best advantage.

I am sorry is anyone was thinking that this was a waving of testicals. I am serious that just because something is posted doesn't mean that we cannot get more out of the post by actively discussing and criticing.

So it sounds like we all have slept out under a piece of canvase. But you know ripstop nylon that has been waterproofed is so much lighter and will take up less space.

I like to read the posts hear and I like to see people make comments. I am not doubting anyones "Cred" I am saying that I get more from a give and take Of experinece and ideas.

I have made knives out of files too. I never seen the use in making a striker for flint and steel. I always carry two ways to make fire. But I am interested in how you made your strikers and how you designed them for the best use.

Really I am just stating the obvious. Survival manuals are plagued with nonsense. even the military manuals. Some of you have been in bad situations and learned the hard way. I would like to take advantage of that.

And maybe, Just maybe instead of just making statements we can find better ways by combining all our experinces.

Ya made some good points.I used a high carbon steel file to make my striker.I will get some photos and get back with you ,,yes  yes I can use a bow drill and just two sticks to sart a fire but I prefer flint ant steel with homemade char cloth...I can start a fire rain or shine with that..any day any time...I can even light my smokes...lol...the rest is just incase..drop your lighter in a puddle and see if it still works. strike anywhere matches are a good start but in time you will need something tried and true...J.M.O

Yeah I have to give you that in a wind it is hard to beat canvas.

I have used a fire drill but I am not very good with it. I tend to yell fuck it and sleep in the cold.......

I have made a fire with a fire plow but I burned up so many calories it was not really worth it.

I have tried the magnezium starters and they work pretty good. Always thought the flint and steel thing was a little bulky. Maybe I will give it a try.
