AMERICAN PIPE (sung to the tune of American Pie)

 Long, long time ago
I can still remember when an ounce of grass was only 30 bucks
And I knew if  I had my way
I'd change the drug laws of today
Because the way things are it really su u u ucks
 The legislation makes me shiver
 Every paper they'd deliver
 Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
 I can't remember if I cried
When late that night, I went outside
But something touched me deep inside
 The day.............my hemp plant died
 CHORUS
So bye bye to a buzz or a high,
Drove my kombi to my dealer but my dealer was dry
I could have a port or two a whisky or rye
Oh but that'll be the day that i die
That'll be the day that i die

So who wrote this book of laws
The same stuffed shirts who start our wars
 The army and the government
Now do you believe in human worth
Do you have plans to save our earth
Are you prepared to stand and give your testament
Well I know that this is hard to do
But surely there must be a few
If we all got up to dance
 Well.........maybe there's a chance
And if all of us can take the field
The government will have to yield
I chose to help the earth be healed
 The day..........my hemp plant died
 CHORUS
So, bye bye to a buzz or a high..................

Now for many years we've fought this cause
To try and change these crazy laws
'Cos that's not how it used to be
When a woman's time came on our queen
She'd have a pipe of powdered green
Or a cup, of marijuana tea
Oh and when the peace pipe passed around
Inside the bowl was to be found
 Both Cherokee and Sioux
 Smoked marijuana too
And when Jesus Christ his meal would share
The twelve disciples all were there
A bowl of green herbs on the fare
And still, my hemp plant died
 CHORUS
So bye bye to a buzz or a high...........
(the slow down bit or ritard)

I met a man, who smoked a bhong
And I asked him what he thought was wrong
But he just smiled and turned away
I went down to the Murray's shore  (big river in oz) site of hippy reunions)
Where I'd smoked with people years before
But the man there said the people couldn't play
In the streets the children screamed
The loves cried and the smokers dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The bhongs had all been broken
And the rebels bold who still were free
 N.O.R.M.L, H.E.M.P, and D. T. E (three well known law reform groups)
Had all gone fishing in the sea
 The day..............my hemp plant died
 And they were singin'

Bye bye to a buzz or a high
Drove my kombi to my dealer
 But my dealer was dry
I could have a port or two a whisky and rye
Ah but that'll be the day that i die,
That'll be the day that I die.
