These generally seemed to go under the heading of "Colemanballs" after Divid Coleman, the erstwhile BBC sports commentator.  In fact there are books published of his bloopers on air.
 
A priceless one was the late John Snagge commentating on the boat race between Oxford and Cambridge.  "I don't know who's in the lead, it's either oxford or cambridge"
 
Or Brian Johnston's by now famous howler about Ian Botham getting his leg over as he lost his balance when plaing a cricket shot.  It took the commentary box around 10 minutes to become coherent again.
