Faunalia (Rome)
Fauna

Themes:  Fertility; Nature; Divination

Symbols:  All Forest Items

About Fauna:  In Rome mythology, Fauna is the consort to Faunus, whom this date venerates.  With Faunus, she protects the woodlands and plants that live there.  While her role in stories sems minor, Fauna's power lives on in botanical terminology, her name having been given to vegetation.

To Do Today:  Faunus was a woodland god like Pan, who sends messages through the forests for those who know nature's omens an signs.  If at all possible, go to a natural location today (even a park or a quiet tree in your neighborhood will do) with a small libation of wine or milk, both of which are customary.  Pour this on the ground, focusing on your intention to learn more about nature's messages to us.  Then spend at least twenty minutes observing, Take notes as you do.  Do the trees' leaves seem to talk?  Do they mve in a specific way?  Are birds takeing flight?  Where do they go?  Do any drop feathers on the grounds?  Do any animals appear unexpectedly?  If so, what does the creature do, and where does it go?  All of these things, and  other similar experiences, can carry a sign meant to help you today or in the days ahead.  To interpret what you see, consult any good folklore or superstition collection, which discusses natural harbingers.

Larunda.jpg image by gemsylb

December 23
Larentalia (Rome)
Larunda

Themes:  Earth; Home; Ghosts

Symbols:  Stove or Oven; Soil or Clay

About Larunda:  Lara is one of the Roman goddesses of  earht and the home.  She is also the mother and guardian to ghosts, or lares, who reside in the hearth and protect the family.  Traditionally, today is her festival day.

To Do Today:  In Rome, this day was a time to say prayers for the dead and the nation, as well as to bring joy to one's home.  In keeping with this tradition, convey words like these to Larunda:

Larunda, hear my words.  Bless the spirits of those
who have gone on before me, and grant them
serenity.  Bless also my nation, that it may know
peace and prosperity this year and always.  Finally,
bless my home with your happiness, prosperity,
and love.  Let all who visit or dwell within feel
your presence and protection surrounding them.
Thank you for these blessings.
So Mote It Be!

To invoke both Larunda's and the lares' blessing on your residence, leave a small jar of soil somewhere near your oven, microwave, toaster, or heater, and say,

Larunda, lares, this house bless, with your warmth and gentleness.

Whenever tensions is the house reach a boiling point, take a pinch of the soil outside and dispose of it.  This releases the magick and symbolically gets rid of the problems.  Don't look back.

Juno.jpg picture by gemsylb

Prepared to go to any lengths to protect her relationship with her husband, Juno gives us the energy to fight for the elements we want and deserve in a relationship in order to preserve and enrich the home environment.

MANTRA

       Together

GEMSTONES

      Amber, Tiger eye, Yellow jade.

ESSENTIAL OILS

Kwan Yin* blend for the heart chakra - the chakra that rules the life aspect of "giving and receiving love"

AFFIRMATIONS

It is easy and uplifting to forgive

     I grow stronger through forgiveness

At this moment, I have all that I need

I give love as I deserve and receive love

I deserve a beautiful relationship based on mutual respect

I deepen my willingness to give and receive unconditional love

Her Story

Juno was married to the Roman god Jupiter (Greek god Zeus) and thus represents the wife and life partner. Juno's energies have moved on from Aphrodite's courting phase, to a fuller commitment to share her physical, emotional and spiritual self through union with a soul mate.

Juno (Greek goddess Hera) protected her status as Queen of Olympus with a passion. She did not ignore her husband's philandering, but took her revenge on the concubines, conquests and even his illegitimate offspring (eg Hercules), thereby preserving what she saw was a happy union (and her image as a diligent and devoted wife).

The month of June was named after this goddess (falling in summer in the northern hemisphere, and therefore a time considered an extra fortuitous time for weddings).

Her Modern Energy

Literally, Juno is epitome of a strong woman who can say, "I deepen my willingness to give and receive unconditional love."

With the energy of this patron goddess of soul-unions at its strongest, now is the time to focus on elements of a relationship you hold most important: loyalty, fidelity, intimacy, inter-dependence, mutual respect, equality and the list goes on.

Do this:

Make this April 21, or December (southern hemisphere) or June (northern hemisphere) a time to reflect on your relationship (or past relationships).

Is there a recurrent theme through your relationships that cause them to break up? If so, the problem may really be with you - spend today listening to your intuition and refine your self-definition by working on your solar plexus chakra. You will know if you are on the wrong path if you feel "butterflies" - this feeling is your solar plexus chakra working to prepare you to succeed in spectacular style!

Carry a yellow stone, wear yellow, or light a fire to help remind you take some time for yourself while you gather the energy to emerge refreshed and focussed.

If you are in the relationship of your dreams, devote this day to gratitude.

Read this dedication to gratitude ('Gifts of Life') by Majorie Montgomery.

I am glad I came into this world able to think and reason.
I am glad I came into this world able to feel sorrow and joy.
I am glad I came into this world able to respond to love and truth.
I am glad I came into this world able to feel and care for others.
I am glad I came into this world able to know my uniqueness.
I am glad I came into this world able to move toward completion.

Love and delight

Vesta

Goddess of household abundance and well-being, Vesta energises the home with a welcoming energy for bountiful, healthy food and comfort.

MANTRA

  • Health

GEMSTONES

Garnet, bloodstone, tourmaline, smoky quartz (red stones)

ESSENTIAL OILS

Kali* blend for the base chakra

AFFIRMATIONS

I am a healthy and fit Size (X)**

My energy comes naturally

I enjoy the food that is good for me

I am healthy in all aspects of my being

I have the power to control my health

I am in control of my health and wellness

Add your perfect size according to the goddess size chart:
     M=Magical, L=Luscious, XL=Extra Luscious

Her Story

Roman goddess Vesta (her Greek name Hestia translates literally to "fire") was the Keeper of the Hearth and domestic life. In ancient times, she was the Goddess of the Vestal Virgins, a powerful group of noble women who tended her temple every day. To become a Vestal Virgin was the highest standard a woman could aspire to, the role representing wholesomeness, purity and health.

Her symbol of fire complements the mesmerising, enlightening and warming properties of fire that let us break free from the hustle and bustle of daily life for at least a short time.

Her Modern Energy

In the southern hemisphere we're in Autumn; Spring in the northern. No matter where you are, Vesta encourages you to maintain care for your body and health. Eating right, staying active, and enjoying the "vices" in moderation will help to keep you healthy and vital during the shorter (and longer!) days.

Do This

If you don't have access to a fireplace (or it's too hot where you are!), light a candle instead, and lose yourself in watching the flame. Enjoy a cup of chamomile tea while you block out the noise of modern life. Sink into a deep appreciation of all things natural and earthy. Repeat the affirmations for good health, re-energise from within

I did an essay a few months ago about Vestalia - the celebration to honor Vesta - I thought I would slip that into here :)

Vestalia

In planning a party for Vesta, it would have to be in a large rounded space. Either a Temple, or something decorated up to resemble a temple. There would be a lot of white decorations, as the name would imply, Vesta had a series of Vestal Virgins to tend the sacred flame during the course of a year. The “cultus Virgines Vestales ?was the only major female priesthood in Rome at the time, and dated back as early as the monarchy itself. Therefore for this party, I would have about 6 young girls, aged between 6 and 10 years old, dressed in white robes tending to 6 large pillar candles around the space.

I would plan this party to be on June 9th , as this was the time of Vestalia, where the inner sanctum of the temple would be open to all worshiping women in Rome. This festival also became a holiday for bakers and millers. As such both the millstones, and the asses that moved them would be draped in garlands of violets and hung with small loaves of bread. Therefore around the space for this party I would have streams of violets (either real or paper) and little loaves of bread on all of the tables. There are many items that would be at the offering tables near the white pillar candles. Wine, incense, meats, bay laurel, juniper, more violets and of course Mola Salsa.

“Mola Salsa:
According to tradition, coarse salt was pounded in a mortar and poured into an earthenware pot that was placed on the fire under a lid of gypsum. It was then cut up with a saw before being thrown into a large jar (seria) with the addition of running water or, at least water that did not pass through the pipes. The water was to be drawn from a sacred spring and carried without ever touching the ground. In May the Vestal Virgins roasted the first ears of grain before grinding them into flour to make mola salsa. A more modern version is simply spelt flour combined with purified water and sea salt. ?1

There would be laughter, and warm merriment for this festival, as Vesta is the virgin Goddess of Hearth and Home. There would be no idol of Vesta present, as she was never depicted in human form, only as the flame that was tended by the Vestals.

Lastly, before everyone sat down to eat the feast of the day, the following prayer would be said aloud, with glasses raised.

“Vesta, in all dwellings of men and immortals
Yours is the highest honor, the sweet wine offered
First and last at the feast, poured out to you duly.
Never without you can gods or mortals hold banquet. ?BR>

The Asteroid Goddesses

By Maya White

Overlooked by some astrologers, and under rated by others, the asteroid goddesses, Juno, Vesta, Ceres, and Pallas Athena fill critical gaps in astrological interpretation.
A recent note from one client reveals their power: " Juno put words to the feelings I have carried for the last decade plus-- that I would work with my partner and that as a couple our work would involve some kind of humanitarian pursuit. At times over the yearsI thought I might be going mad because I couldn't articulate what I was feeling very well and had no basis for feeling that way."

My client continues, "After a while I just quit talking about it so that I didn't have to explain myself to friends and family. But this description of Juno says that it's not only normal that I would feel this way, but also where I will thrive in relationship! Don't you just love astrology?"

Discovered in the early 1800's, the asteroid belt is a grouping of small bodies orbiting between Mars and Jupiter. They symbolically form a bridge between our personal awareness as represented by the inner and the outer planets.
Several asteroids orbit between Mars and Jupiter, but the largest in size and influences are Pallas Athena, Vesta, Juno, and Ceres.
Truly, as a race, we are returning to honor of the divine feminine. Inviting the asteroids emphasizes humanity's evolving recognition of our dependency on Mother Earth.

Ceres - The Earth Mother
Key words: Protection, Separation, Seasonal Cycles,
Fertility and Harvest, Mother/Daughter Issues
Ceres, also known as Demeter, (the Mother) is the largest of the asteroids. Venerated as a goddess of the harvest, Ceres gives clues to our acceptance of nurturing, unconditional love, and self esteem. As an archetypical Mother, Ceres also reveals early childhood nurturing issues. And critically, Ceres shows how we weather the transformational mysteries of birth and death.

Juno - The Queen
Keywords: Marriage and Commitment, Beauty,
Renewal of Love, Betrayal
Next in the lineup of asteroid goddesses is Juno, also known as Hear. Juno is a goddess of peace and fertility ruling over three lunar stages of life: Maiden - of the New Moon, Bride - of the Full Moon, and Widow - of the Dark Moon. Juno is also assigned themes of committed relationships. These can be traditional themes such as those surrounding love and marriage as well as business relationships. Sexuality is the deepest expression of Juno, and her doorway to the secret of life.

Vesta - The High Priestess
Keywords: Focus, Dedication, Mystery, Tantric Sexuality,
Enlightenment, Sacred Flame
Another aspect of sexuality and love is symbolized by Vesta. In contrast to Juno's realm of intimacy within the boundaries of a formalized relationship, Vesta's altar was one of sacred sexuality in the name of devotional love. Vesta's energetic realm is that of ceremony and ritual psychic development. Expressing her keynotes of purity and fire, in the natal chart Vesta reveals our focus. It's where our inner hearth fire burns and guides us as we direct our personality. Once again, there is a call for commitment- this time to one's self.

Pallas Athena - The Sacred Warrior
Keywords: Strategy, Wisdom, the Arts, Holistic Healing,
Drawing, Weaving, and Pottery
Last but not least is Pallas Athena. Also known as Minerva, this warrior goddess daughter of Zeus came to life fully mature and ready to meet her destiny. She is renowned for her gifts of prophecy as well as her wisdom. She is also revered as the goddess who taught the practical arts of pottery and weaving to humankind. In the natal chart, Pallas accents issues dealing with intellectual drive and our creative urges. She supports excellence in the professional world, but also addresses the cost women (and men) sometimes pay for intellectual armor. Pallas Athena also addresses how one's will is expressed through artistic endeavors or healing energies.
Resources:
Mythological stories provide much insight into the asteroid stories, and thankfully a few authors have taken on the task of unveiling the role of asteroids in our collective consciousness. One of the best books for more detailed information is "Asteroid Goddesses, the Mythology, Psychology and Astrology of the Reemerging Feminine" by Demetra George (ACS Pub 1986.) Another excellent resource is "Mythic Astrology" by Ariel Guttman and Kenneth Johnson (Llewellyn Pub 1993.) Both of these books are authentic and valuable tributes to asteroid interpretation.
The asteroid goddesses, Juno, Vesta, Ceres, and Pallas Athena enrich the lives of both women and men. Greet them with reverence for the archetypical role which they play in all of our lives. Their stories make an amazing contribution to astrology. Thank you, Goddesses!

Martonella (Rome)
Bona Dea

Themes:  Femininity; Blessings; Fertility; Divination; Abundance

Symbols:  Vines; Wine

About Bona Dea:  Bona Dea name literally means "good goddess."  Her energies come into our lives at the outset of this month, offering all good things, especially fertility and a greater appreciation of the goddess within each of us.
Traditionally, Bona Dea is a women's goddess who received offerings of wine in exchange for prophetic insights during her observances.

To Do Today:  On March 1, February was excorted out of Rome with a flourish of adaptable activities.  Exchange sweet gifts as the Romans did to ensure yourself of a sweeter future.  Greet a friend with Bona Dea's name to invoke her blessings on them.  Put up a grapvine wreath fashioned like a heart (or othe symbol of something you need), and leave a glass of wine on your altar to honor Bona Dea's presence in your home and your life.
In Rome, female slaves would get this day off, and the head of the house would wait on them.  In modern times this equates to switching roles for a day at home.  Whoever normally gets up and fixes breakfast gets to sleep in, whoever normally does chores get to go out and socializes, and so forth.  Bona Dea appreciates the considerate gesture as much as you do and will rain her goodness upon your home.

  Goddess~A~Day

Floralia (Rome)

Flora

Themes:  Beauty; Sexuality; Love; Spring; Fertility

Symbols:  All Flowers

About Flora:  Roman prostitutes considered Flora their own goddess, protecting all acts of beauty, especially heartfelt lovemaking.  She is also a spring goddess from whom we get the word flora, meaning blossom or plants.  Symbolically, this flowering pertains to the human spirit to, one that can appreciate beauty in the body without necessarily making it into a sex object.

To Do Today:  Wearing bright colors on this day is customary, as is decorating everything with a plethora of flowers, each of which has Flora's presence within.  If flowers prove difficult to obtain or too costly, think floral aromas instead.  Pull out a blossoming air freshener, light floral incense, or wear a floral perfume.  Flora is as much a part of the scent as she is the petals, conveying love and passion on each breeze!

Another traditional activity for this day is erotic dancing.  If you have someone special in your life, tantalize them a bit with slow, sexy movements.  Let Flora's passion fill both of you to overflowing, then let nature take her course.

Finally, make yourself a Flora charm that incites the interest of those from whom you seek it.  Take three flower petals and tuck them in your clothing, keeping an image of your partner in mind, and say,

One for interest,
two for Flora's desire,
three to light passion's fire.

 FLORA

Flora was the Roman Goddess of flowers and all plants. She symbolized the flowering of nature and was celebrated during the Floralia, which started on April 27th and lasted six days, by women honoring their bodies in their natural state. She was considered the clandestine patron of Rome since, without her, the city would not grow and thrive. She is wearing an earring from Pompeii, 1st century BCE-1st century CE; a Roman ring from the 3rd century CE; and a Roman bracelet from the 1st-2nd century CE. In the background is a Roman statue of an earth Goddess.

Flora, Fluusa
(Roman)

A very ancient Goddess who was the embodiment of all flowering nature. She was originally worshipped from April 28 to May 3 with orgies. Flowers are the sex organs of plants, and the orgiastic rites were sympathetic magic to cause the plants to bloom well and bear fruit well. According to Robert Turcan, The Gods of Ancient Rome (1998), "There was joyful feasting beneath the flowers, everyone trying to outdo the rest in drinking, and dancing by the light of nocturnal torches. People also wore many-coloured clothing; but for the actresses in mime shows, striptease on the festival boards was obligatory." (p. 69) In modern times, she lends her name to all of the plant kingdom.
Flora
Roman Goddess of flowers and all that flourishes.
She is the equivalent of the Greek flower Goddess Chloris
and her sacred candle colors are white and all floral colors.

May Day (Beltane)

Maia

Themes:  Sexual Prowess; Playfulness; Wishes

Symbols:  Braided or Knotted items

About Maia:  This Roman goddess, whose name means "mother", offers all who seek it fulfillment and renewed zest.  Maia gave her name to the month of May.  She's the queen of the flowers, and today was one of her festival days, celebrated suitably with an abundance of blossoms.  In later times, Maia became strongly associated with Bona Dea, whose name literally translates as "good goddess".

To Do Today:  As a child, on this day I left bundles of wildflowers anonymously at neighbors' homes.  As a random act of beauty and kindness, this still holds merit today and certainly honors Maia.

In magical circles people customarily braid wishes into the ribbons of the Maypole and leave them there to germinate and grow until fall.  To do this yourself, find three strands of blue ribbon and braid them together so they meet five times, saying,

'Tis the month of May, for _______(health, love, money, or whatever) I wish today.
Ribbons of blue, help my wish come true.
Braided within, the spell begins.
Bound to and fro, the magic grows.
When in Fall untied, this wish is mine!

Wear a flowery shirt, skirt, or tie today to welcome Maia and brighten your day

Terminalia (Rome)

MINERVA

Themes: Earth; Home

Symbols: Owl; Geranium

About Minerva: This Etruscan/Italic goddess blended the odd attributes of being a patroness of household tasks, including arts and crafts, and also being the patroness of protection and of war. Today she joins in pre-spring festivities by helping people prepare their lands for sowing and embracing the figurative lands of our hearts, homes, and spirits with her positive energy.

To Do Today: In ancient times, this was a day to bless one's lands and borders. Gifts of corn, honey, and wine were given to the earth and its spirits to keep the property safe and fertile throughout the year. In modern times, this equates to a Minerva-centered house blessing.

Begin by putting on some spiritually uplifting music. Burn geranium-scented incense if possible; otherwise, any pantry spice will do. Take this into every room of your home, always moving clockwise to promote positive growing energy. As you get to each room, repeat this incantation:

Minerva, protect this sacred space and all who live within. By your power and my will, the magic now begins!

Wear a geranium today to commemorate Minerva and welcome her energy into your life.

By Patricia Telesco ~ From "365 Goddess"

Minerva (Italian)

An ancient Goddess, probably of Etruscan origin, as her name is apparently derived from the Etruscan Goddess Menvra. Minerva was a Goddess of handicrafts and her chief temple on Aventine was the center of worship for the Roman guilds. She was also a Goddess of intelligence or wisdom and a patroness of schools. The sacred animal of Minerva was the antelope, a prophetic animal. The eyes of the antelope were associated with sharpness of vision.

PAX
Festival of Pax (Rome)

Theme: Peace
Symbols: White Items; Corn; Cornucopia; Olive Branch

About Pax: Pax is the Roman Goddess of peace; she urges us to keep
harmony among one another as a sacred commodity throughout the year.
On coins, Pax appears youthful and often bears an olive branch to
extend the hand of truce or a cornucopia, indicating that there is an
abundance of peace for those who truly seek it.

To Do Today: Remember Pax by wearing or carrying something whole
today and offering to make amends with someone with whom you've had
an argument.

Alternatively, make a funnel from a piece of white paper (like a
cornucopia). Leave this somewhere predominate. Each time you have an
angry or discordant thought, toss a coin into the funnel. At the end
of the day donate these coins (plus a few dollars) to a charity that
promotes peace.

Roman custom dictated that the images of all leaders were to be
placed at Pax's feet on this day, as to invoke her amicable energy to
their interactions. This isn't a bad idea for modern leaders, either!
Take any pictures you have of world leaders (check newspapers and
magazines). If you can't find pictures, write their names on white
paper instead. Put these in a pile before a white candle. As you
light the candle, say:

Pax, let peace fill their hearts.
Let all hatred depart.
Peace be between me and thee, and all those I meet.

This is interpretted as dentifying her with the Cosmic Goddess, as the rotating stars or Milky Way is thought to be her wheel. This imagery is reflected in the Norse Cosmic Goddess Frigga, whose bejeweled spinning wheel is also equated to the rotating stars.

Her role as ruler of this Otherworldly domain may have might suggest that the ancient Gauls named Argantoratis in honor of the protective refuge they perceived her Otherworld to be. Anna Furrinna Festival
(Rome)

Themes:  Cycles; Peace; Kindness; Grounding; Longevity

Symbols:  Circular items (rings, wheels, wreaths); Wine

About Anna Furrinna:  Anna Furrinna, like Ala, symbolizes the entire year's cycle. Even her name translates as "enduring year."  Legend tells us that Anna was once a real woman who showed benevolence to refugees from the Roman aristocracy by giving them food until peace was established.  It is this gentle spirit with which Anna comes into our lives, offering the spiritual harmony engendered by random acts f kindness.

To Do Today:  Roman honored Anna Furrinna around this date because March was the first month of the Roman calendar.  In true Roman fashion--that looks for any excuse for a party--they spent the day praying that Anna would let them live one more year for each cup of wine drunk this day.  Wine (or grape juice) remains a suitable libation to Anna Furrinna when asking for longevity.  As you pour the liquid, say,

A long life of health, blessed from winter to spring,
Anna Furrinna, longevity bring!

To encourage inner peace and security in your life, keep a pinch of soil-wine mixture in any round container as a charm.  Open the container and put the blend under your feet when you feel your foundations shaking, or when stress wreaks havoc in your heart.
Wearing any ring, belt, or other circular item today stimulates a greater understanding of Anna's cycles in nature and your life.
