TWO Questions Really

1. Overcall 1S. Switch spades with diam and it is a t/o dbl. When 5card suit is major, bid it unless too strong.

2. 1H (2nd choice is 1N). Alan said he plays 1N = 10-12, but most play 1N=6-9. Your clubs and hand strength are not enough convert t/o to penalty at 1 level, so you are stuck bidding a 3 card major.

1S overcall

Pass, I always pass with KQxxx of clubs in this auction.

On this hand 1Cx makes. And West is stronger than expected.

I think almost all experts will agree that KQxxx and out is insufficient to pass a t/o dbl at the one level. KQ109x is much better.

Ah partner, was hoping you'd post this hand !!

You know already I thought you needed to bid 1S instead of the takeout double...

You dble and I look at my hand and I need to "lie"... So what is my cheapest lie??  1NT is out of the question, I play it as 8-10 pts and 1 stopper in the opps suit.  I don't have a 4 card major so in rare instances you will need to bid a 3 card major.  Do I want to bid 1H with those 3 little things?  Nope.  I can pass if I have length and strength in opps bid suit and convert to penalty.  All my points and length are in clubs so I have found my cheapest "lie", therefore the pass.  And it was the correct bid if I would have played 'em right !!  Been awhile since I've had a good bridge "discussion" Morgann     Julie

My opinions - for what they are worth

1)  As everyone has said, 1S is better
2)  I would not convert this double at this level with the East hand. I'd bid 1H
3)  Assuming the auction goes P 1C X P P back to South, South must redouble.  In fact I think South should redouble with any hand having only 3 clubs
4)  Even though South's redouble is for takeout, North should probably leave it in, since he has Jxxx of clubs, scattered values and no major suit to bid (South can't have a 5-card major)
5)  1CXX should always make, I think.  West leads the 9 of clubs, mandatory on this auction.  East makes the normal split of her club honors.  South wins in hand and plays diamond, diamond, diamond ruff back to hand.  SQ then wraps it up for NS, and I think low to HQ also does.  Note that South is basically playing double dummy after this auction, except that he will expect spades to split 4-3.

P.S.  If 1CXX is the best spot for NS then leaving in a double of 1C, even if the double is imperfect, can't be the best action by either of East and West.

Thanks All for input ..So the consensus was a 1spade overcall
My reasoning for dbling was thatr NS was vulnerable, my P had passed in opening so game unlikely and I was willing to play 2 of anything except clubs..

Well sure EW don't have a making game.  But it may be right for EW to later bid 4S over their 4H, especially at this vul, and your partner cannot make that decision correctly if she thinks you have only 4 spades.
