Have an area for different activities eg:

 

Exercise area ( they had screens which could be removed to see the TV area while exercising-- great idea for exercise videos.

 

Games, crafts area (table that turns into a bed! - would love to have that but I think very expensive)

 

Home theatre area - they used slip covers to cover sofas - looked great

 

Big toy area ie. play garages, dollhouse- stored under this sort of counter all in a row (an area where these people did not know what to do)

 

Small toys were in stacking rolling drawer things that could be taken apart.  Everything labelled for the 7-year old boy who was just learning to read well and stored in a big closet.

 

Board games were stored in a cabinet under the TV (not too far from the table)

 

The panelling was painted a nice greyish colour (formerly ugly dark brown)

 

Toys were sorted first according to which kid they belonged to in piles (even the parent's stuff in a pile) before they decided on how much storage they needed.  Tons of toys were donated.
