Forgot to say it was a decision-making weekend I guess. We decided to take one of my sister's kittens. He/she (she can't tell yet) is too young to bring home - they are not quite 5 weeks. As much as I hate the thought of another animal that could bring its own problems, it's important to Braeden and Sami needs a feline friend. We also decided to go ahead and take the next step toward replacing our van. The one I've hated since we were forced into a quick decision to buy it last November. I can't believe it's been almost a year. We've been waffling whether to get me a new van or for me to take Scott's old car and get him another small car to save on gas. His car gets decent mileage and his new one would get good mileage - meanwhile I can practically watch the gauge on the van go down. It's kind of depressing - I HATE Scott's car! But I'm the one pushing for this. He thinks we need a van but we don't "need" one. It's nice to have a big van to haul things in and carry extra kids and have plenty of room for camping equipment but we don't "need" it. It will suck to cram the kids into the back of his small car and to have to say no to any more than 1 extra kid but next year Braeden will be big enough to sit up front. Actually he's a big kid for his age so he's pretty much big enough to sit up there now - he weighs around 110 and is over 5 ft tall so he's already the size of a small woman. Not that I'd have him up there regularly but if we have extra kids with us he could move up front. We are probably getting Scott a Chevy Cobalt which is even smaller than his Malibu. It gets 37 mph highway - I think his Malibu gets about 25. My van gets about 16 around town - not sure about highway and not sure what the Malibu will get around town but it has to be better than 16. Scott drives a lot so it will hopefully be a big savings for him and a small savings for me. If we replaced my van with another van I doubt the mileage would be much better than I get now. I don't think we'll get anything extra for the van - hopefully we'll get enough trade-in to pay it off. I don't want to outright sell it because it's a piece of crap and I don't want to do that to someone else. So we'll be getting two things that cost money (even with the gas-savings, it will be a big car loan which we're not used to anymore) but I still haven't done anything towards me MAKING more money. Sigh... |

Hi, just wanted to say I'm sort of around today. Em is home sick. Timmy is sleeping. So, I'm going to veg on the couch until he wakes up since I'm VERY slow moving this morning, despite going to bed before 10:30. Actually, i guess that is kinda late. |

Having a blah day, as usual. No puking or migraines though so that's a bonus! I'm glad you're getting rid of the van you don't like! Sounds like a good idea about the cars, even if you're stuck with a car you don't like... it'll be better on gas, I'm sure! I like those Cobalts, if they are the ones I have pictured in my head. I picture a nice blue colour. Woohoo on the decluttering!! Give me some of that energy so I can do that here! lol You posted the recipe for hamburger rice in the recipe folder a long time ago, right? I have so much hamburger, I'm wanting something different other than spaghetti. It sounds like a perfect cool weather meal too (if I'm remembering it right.) This week is supposed to be quite cool so I'm hoping I'll be well enough to finally get my butt into the kitchen and do some yummy fall meals. Woohoo on the new kitty!! You don't know how badly I want a new one. Not sure how Winnie would do with one but I think it would help him from escaping outside if he had a bud in here. Maybe we'll re-visit this after the baby gets here. |

Hi Sara - you snuck in there when I was posting yesterday and I didn't see you! Yay on no puking :-) I'm nervous about a car - I keep thinking that if I'd been hit with my kids in the car and not in a van, my kids would have been so badly hurt in that accident. Financially it's the right thing for us though. And my husband has been driving a Chevy since he was 18 so they've been good to us despite being incredibly boring. His first car was a Cavalier, his second was a Cavalier, and the Malibu is only his third car. The Cobalt is pretty much a Cavalier - I'm not sure if they make Cavaliers anymore or not. I picture blue too (like "cobalt blue") but I'm not sure what color we'll get - the blue one we both like is not navy but not bright blue -somewhere in between (but not cobalt blue which I think is like those blue vases you see - wouldn't you think a "cobalt" car would have "cobalt blue" offered for its blue shade? lol). We'll get whatever color's cheapest I guess although Scott has something against most of them (we're both sick of red, gray is too dull, he wanted bright yellow until I saw it in yellow and told him it looks like a teenage girl's first car - some cars are okay bright yellow but this one is so cheap and dull otherwise that making it bright yellow is like when a teenage girl has enough money to not buy an old bucket but not really enough to buy a "nice" new car so she gets a boring car and makes it yellow so that convinced him he doesn't want yellow LOL, and white gets dirty too quickly). So we may end up with blue even if it costs a little more! That would be a first I think - we've always just bought whatever color is easier to make a good deal on. Probably why we are both sick of death of dark red!! Hamburger rice is easy - the only thing is you have to use Kraft original recipe barbecue (not the spicy version or any other brand) or it doesn't taste good. I made it with other kinds of barbecue sauce and it sucked. I love it with the Kraft though - my dad used to make this for company (don't know why since it's not an expensive company-type dish) when I was a kid and it was my favorite - we had it very rarely though. Anyway here's how you make it: - chop green pepper and onion - I use one medium of each, sometimes more
- boil 2 C water for instant rice
- turn off the heat, add 2 C instant rice (I used Minute brown rice last night and it was just as good - some instant brown rice changes the taste but I'm anti-white rice right now)
- add the veggies and cover - set timer for 15 minutes
- fry ground beef in a big skillet - I use about 1 lb of extra lean - chop it up and drain it if it's really fatty
- once timer goes off, dump the veggies and rice into the skillet with the beef
- add barbecue sauce to taste and mix well - for 2 cups of rice I usually use about 1 full small bottle of barbecue sauce - for 3 cups of rice I'd use a little more (I used to use 3 C of rice when Erik was here)
- cook through until it's hot
it only takes about 20 minutes plus chopping, dirties two pans, and uses 5 everyday ingredients so pretty easy. chane hates it but i pick out the green peppers and onions from his and he'll eat it that way. don't use frozen veggies because they need to be slightly firm once cooked in my opinion and the frozen ones are limp once they're cooked. man if you could use frozen ones it would be SUPER easy! |
