Here is a nice little story; I am paraphrasing; I can't remember where I heard it:
There were two little seeds.
One wanted to send its roots into the ground exploring into the rich earth and greet the sun by sprouting up joyously.
The other was afraid ; the ground was dark and if it sprouted a child might rip it out of the ground or an animal might nibble it's leaves off. So it did not grow.
A week or so later a hen rooting in the spring ground for food promptly found the seed and ate it!
Moral: No risk, no growth.
