I used to think that I had to have chips and cookies in the house at all times for the kids.  I think this stemmed from when my son was skinny.  He has also always been picky.  Lately I have noticed that he is getting just a bit pudgy around his middle.  A little bit of a tire and that dimply kind of fat on his front abdomen.  To me boys of 8 should be skinny.  I have read many articles in the newspaper lately about kids who are obese,  too much TV, computer and kids who don't play tag all afternoon like we did when growing up.

So now we get potatoe chips only once in a while, the same with cookies.  They are expensive too.  I have started trying out one new organic product every week.  I am spending no more money.  eg. bag of chips when I am not buying 2 for $5.00.  Instead I buy a really good cream cheese which does not contain carob bean and added water and instead contains pure milk and not much else.  Ben loves it (Western brand - found at Sobey's in organic section or regular dairy section in other supermarkets).   Or I will buy good quality pretzels or plain Nacho chips which we have for dinner as a treat with cheese, meat, tomatoes etc. on top with a dip of "real" sour cream without fillers... more expensive but you aren't taking in carob bean gum or guar gum... I bet your body does not even digest it!  It's snacky but it's dinner and we don't crave chips because we are not denying ourselves.

Or I buy more fruit, yogurt, rice pudding, cheese strings or baked crackers.

Whatever I think I should not eat I think the kids should also not eat.

You are so right, we don't have to provide junk like that to the kids, I am working really hard on buying more of the good stuff and less of the bad.

Well, I'm really procrastinating on supper. lol Can we start a snack thread? I need ideas for what to have around the house and I'm sort of at a loss for ideas.
