I have to make a resume for a portfolio and to send to galleries and a few web sites. This is what I have and am wanting input on the wording, flow, etc. I haven't gotten all the permissions to use names yet so they are *** out. I didn't want to mention the chair but i don't want to surprise any galleries just to find them inaccessable when I show up..and to answer the usual question in advance. M. James Pinto Biography: Born in June 1961 in East central FL, now residing in Bazine Kansas. I've always had an interest in art. Self taught and always experimenting and working in new and interesting mediums, my imagination and excitement has been ever increasing since childhood. Life gets in the way at times but then something comes about that stops one in their tracks and makes them reassess what is important. For me, it was an accident as a child which took many years to place me where I am today. A closed head injury and a neurological disorder placed me in a wheelchair for my mobility. As it turns out after years of struggle, that gave me a great gift, the chance to come back to my first love, the love of creating. Through art, one can go anywhere, anytime and even through time. Artist statement: All of life's experiences cumulate and point one in their life's direction if one is aware enough to watch and patiently follow the path. For me, it's art. Nature gives beauty and offers us a chance to be creators of all that's around us if we will take the time to stop, observe and connect, to be a part of it and not just let it pass by. Mine is to bring the viewer into the work, allow them to be a part in it and let the imagination move through time, space and existence as a whole. As much as possible, I use natural materials and imagination to create miniature worlds, stone sculptures, "microsculpture" and words to bring my viewers or listeners into my realm. In sculpture, be it wood or stone, the piece sings out what it wants to be. I listen and follow the steps as it leads me through it's joyful dance of release. Media: Stone Sculpture Wood Wax Oil and acrylic paint Natural egg shells Digital art Poetry Exhibitions: "Worlds in Miniature" Hays Arts Counsel, Hays Kansas. 2 man exhibition Norwest Bank, Brighton Colorado. 1 year exhibit of a very intensely detailed miniature work Heathcote Books, Brighton Colorado. 2 month exhibit Colorado Lions Camp, Woodland Park Colorado. 1 month exhibit of an old west town in miniature. Television: Channel 13 news, Colorado, Springs Colorado. "The Colorado Spirit Report" a segment focusing on my miniature works. Other notables: My art has been the focal point or mentioned favorably in newspaper articles in Colorado Springs CO, Brighton CO and Hays KS. Also once asked to build miniatures for a motion picture production which I, regretably, had to decline at the time. Galleries: Wyold Aspen Gallery, Saratoga Wyoming. Mick, I did a lot of letter composition/layout...resumes, all that...vocational office education was my major and minor, and I did learn a lot about composition, punctuation, and grammar. This is a once-over...editing....a few hints...always spell a number, if it's ten or under. You don't type, for instance, 1 person....it's one person. Also, in something like this, you would not abbreviate the name of a state...spell it out. Commas always go between the city and state. General rule. It's a good writing, Mick. I think by making better paragraphs, and simplifying and combining some sentences, it makes a better flow. I also like the bold headings between topics better than the underline and colon...it's less busy, and more pronounced. I'd also include more information about the addy, etc., of where your exihibits are. Just a name of a city and state...doesn't give people much to go on.... Anyway, this is my little contribution. Don't you think it's more pleasing to the eye? And a better flow? Hope I helped a little! This is truly a great starting point, Mick! |

I like it, Mick... and with the little tug here and twitch there, as Peny is doing & that Kathy will do... it'll be fine. Looks good |

Yes, I do like that better Peny. Thank you. The "Other private collectors" are the people who don't want their names listed but do own some of my works. Some want to remain anonymous but it's showing there are other works out there. I've seen that on many artists profiles..don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing really. Yup, my phone number will be on it. On exhibits, I just did it the way I saw other people doing theirs. Norwest Bank is now Wells Fargo, Heathcote Books is no more and I doubt the Lion's Camp would even remember since it's been a long time and management's always changing. My spell checker missed the two t's there..damned things anyway. The commas...I originally had them in there but it looked funky to me..but I do have to go with what's correct. Thanks for the read and redo..I like it the changes. Looking forward to Kathy's critique. Thanks Starry. I knew bringing it in here would get some good input. |

Various private collectors! Sounds better...to me....than "other". Has more *power*. I'm always eager to help anyone when it comes to things such as this. Did you know that at one point in my life, I searched and searched for a job in editing? Mick, I'm soooo proud of you...and also feel very fortunate to know you! You have such a drive and passion, and it's rubbing off on me. It's alllll good! |

OK, sorry. It's been a very difficult family day. I've pasted Peny's changes below and like them. There are only 1-2 things I'd add at this point. No need for commas at the month/year. Mostly, I've just suggested a little re-arrangement. Feel free to ignore me...my feelings won't be hurt. Everyone's style is different. Rock on! Kathy I was born in June 1961 in east central Florida. Looks good to me Mick. As far as I can remember, I don't believe that I have ever seen an "artists resume." The only thing that I didn't notice was a personal and outward appearence of energy and enthusiasm for your craft. I believe in this case, it's okay to allow your bubblyness and great personality show it's self. I think they (clients)should be brought to a proportional level of excitement and allowed to feel your passion and committment you have. Remember, there are a lot of starving artists out there. It's your concern to appear unique and head and shoulders above the crowd. Properly presented, that should help you get your foot into the door, so to speak. As an aside here....are there any examples of successfully written resumes anywhere on the web that you might be able to use as a template? Good luck ! |

Thanks Redi. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing if any I've seen on the web were successful or not. Just looked at some and saw what the headings were for each section in them. They were mostly people who don't do anything like what I do but the headings would work. |

Yu can discount every word of this and put it down to my being British A little correction. No d on the realize After years of struggle, I realized that this accident actually allowed me to realized and pursue I'm also not sure about mixing first and third person i.e. you sometimes say "I" and sometimes say "one". I was always taught it should consistently be one or the other i.e. all third person or all first. so a minor change to this phrase assuming first person throughout would be: Life gets in the way at times, but then something came about that stopped me in my tracks and made me reassess what is truly important. As a child I sustained a closed-head injury, causing a neurological disorder which placed me in a wheelchair. The artist statement mixes first and third too and as it is your statement I think it should be in the first person. Perhaps something along the lines of: I believe that all of life's experiences cumulate and point us in our life's direction. We only need to be aware enough to watch and patiently follow the path. For me that path is art. It gives me the opportunity to be a contributor to the beauty that nature gives us, which is all around us. We only need to take the time to stop, observe, and connect, becoming a part of it and not just letting it pass by. My desire is to bring the viewer into the work; to allow them to be a part of it, and to let the imagination move through time, space and existence as a whole. I think the phrase about being asked to design for motion pictures I would leave at that point. Unless someone asks you do not need to tell them you declined. Otherwise I would leave it out all together A bit of rearranging here flows better My art has either been the focal point, or mentioned favorably in newspaper articles No comma before and Colorado and Hays, Kansas You need to name the other artist here and I would twist it a little Two-man exhibition; "Worlds in Miniature" with ****** Hays Arts Counsel, Hays, Kansas. I used to work for a Fine Art insurer and saw lots of artists biographies and they vary so much. Some can be intensly personal like yours (which I like) and others simply a catalogue entry type (which I don't like). I used to edit and proof read the newsletter. I hope some of the comments will be of use but won't be hurt if you ignore them all except the one about the two man needing the other artists name - that's a must. |
