Friday as you probably all know by now is Mai-Lin's bday and Rob and Kim bought her brand spanking new hot pink lap top. I don't think this is a good age for her to have one. For pete's sake she is only going to be 8. She already has a cptr at their home for all to use, but her own lap top? MUCH TOO MUCH. I'm grateful that her father could afford to do this, but I think he's compensating her for the time he's not there w/her because he works very much. I think him spending one hr a day w/her before he goes to work would be much better than all these expensive gifts. Is it just me or is this too much for a young girl?

I think 8 is old enough for a computer. In fact, alot of kids have one or use one way before that. Its a nice gift, and im not sure why youre upset. Check your motives on this, could it be jealousy? I ask this, cause ive been there, and had to do some self talk, fast. It will not make her love him more, and you less. So dont worry about that.

No MamaMW I'm not jealous in the least bit, but just think he might be spoiling her a lil' bit too much and it's the last thing I want is a spoiled brat. They already have a cptr at home, which was her Christmas present and now her own lap top. I just thought it was a lil' bit too much for a girl her age, but maybe I just need to get w/the program. I'm not upset, but just like I said, more concerned about what she'll expect by the time she's 13. A car? LOL!

you can keep her from using the internet...just have her do games and stuff on it...the more she on, the better her typing is. she will need it later on.

and besides. if your pc crashes. you can uses her!!! LOL

I think 8 is a bit young for a fancy lappie.  I mean she probably gets some puter time at school and if she already has a computer at home.....kids are wrapped up too much in fancy schmancy technology.  She's in the 4th grade, right?  Too young in my opinion for that big of a gift.  Sounds like a buy out to me...just mho

I also believe 8 yrs old is too young for a child to have their own computer, especially if they have access to one at home.  As Ros said, almost all kids have monitored use of computers at school.  A computer of her own is just another electronic game toy and kids already have too many of those.

Like Chopsticks said, the biggest issue is not letting her have unsupervised or unrestricted access to the internet.

I see your point Lynnie about what she will expect as she gets older. That is a big gift for a little girl. Ros is right, it smacks of a buyout.
