A scared, but hopeful, illegal alien scaled a chain link fence & snuck into CA from Mexico one dark night... hid out in a decrepit camper, worked as farm laborer & painter awhile... spoke no English.  While juggling jobs, he took courses in the languge and eventually won a scholarship to the U of CA @ Berkeley... from there, on to Harvard Medical school... somewhere along the line, he became a citizen... today... today he is a top medical researcher and brain surgeon ( brain cancers ) and has gone tirelessly to work on information uncovered by a Canadian lab, demonstrating  that, seemingly, stem cells are the cause of brain cancer ( & other cancers ) as well as the cure. Looks very promising that we can soon identify and turn off the specific cells. God bless the American melting pot!

Know the great thing about him?  He came here, he worked, he learned, he did something to contribute...didn't milk the system for what he could...now he stands to be a huge boost in our fight with cancer?  That's truly great...I wish him all the best.

unfortunately, he is the exception to the rule. Like tigger said, he didnt come here to milk the system, he contributed, he gave back!
Im sure we have greatly advanced mexico too, by going there.
I didnt know this about stem cells. Interesting.

Introduction

Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa, M.D.

"Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa, M.D., received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston, where he graduated with honors. He then completed his residency in neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco, where he also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the program of Developmental and Stem Cell Biology. Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa has been honored with the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Ronald Bittner Award, as well as multiple teaching awards.

Now an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Oncology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Director of the Brain Tumor Program at The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa focuses on the surgical treatment of primary and metastatic brain tumors, with emphasis on intraoperative motor and speech mapping. He is an expert in treating intradural spinal tumors, brain stem and eloquent brain tumors in adults with the use of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring.

Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa also has expertise based on his extensive clinical experience in the treatment of patients with pituitary tumors using a trans-sphenoidal endonasal approach with surgical navigation and/or endoscopic techniques. He has a strong interest in treating patients with skull base tumors and the use of radiosurgery as an adjunct to the treatment of these lesions.

Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa conducts numerous research efforts on elucidating the role of stem cells in the origin of brain tumors, and the potential role stem cells can have in fighting brain cancer and subsequently regaining neurological function. He has published multiple studies in brain and spinal cord tumors, as well as stem cell biology".

To me, it means that the burden we bear, caused by illegals, may be off set by just this one exceptional man who had to make his start this way. America gave him opportunity, albeit illegal opportunity,  to possibly cure cancer in our lifetime.
