Barack Obama reveals stimulus package that could exceed $1 trillion

Barack Obama warned Americans yesterday that the US economic crisis will deepen next year, as he revealed the first details of a massive stimulus package that could ultimately exceed $1 trillion.

The President-elect, giving the most extensive interview since winning the election a month ago, spoke the day after he announced the biggest public works construction programme since Dwight Eisenhower created the interstate highway system half a century ago.

In saying twice that “things are going to get worse before they get better? Mr Obama was not simply reflecting the realities of the stricken US economy but seeking to gain political advantage from the financial crisis.

By talking up the scale of the recession the President-elect was lowering expectations for what he can achieve next year while seeking to justify what will, in effect, be the greatest injection of federal money into the US economy since the Depression-era New Deal. LINK

uh huh.  and Clinton's policies were a one way ticket to recession.

When you get tired of being wrong you may make a respectable showing in a future election.  I don't foresee either for a long time.

actually...Clinton made substantial cuts in many arenas... especially in the military and his spending on VA benefits and education brought Bush having increases that doubled that spending.   So...Clinton's recipe for tax increases and spending cuts thwarted inflation.   So far, Obama has promised to increase spending at least a trillion dollars on top of the already trillion that's being spent.

I would wait and see what Obama ends up doing before even commenting on it.

He is only the president, not the King. He still has to deal with Congress and Congress is still a circus.

Some of you remind me of the irate motorist who is stuck in a traffic jam caused by a MASSIVE accident ahead.  The Bush disaster will take a long time and much sacrifice to clean up.

The scary part is that we won't know the extent of the damage until well into Obama's term. It will take months to unearth the hidden damage.

God only knows what Bush has done.

to put it briefly, inflation is caused by too many dollars chasing too few goods and services, so it's a concern right now, nobody has any money anyway.

look at interest rates, you think ANYBODY is worried about inflation?

If anything, the threat is DEflation.

It is very scary out there and each week that goes by, it gets a little bit more scary. Where this will end up is anybody's guess but, frankly...I don't put too much confidence in Obama with respect to being able to change anything, anytime soon. The man has even admitted himself that things won't change in the short term, in fact they most probably will get worse.

you seem to be forgetting that for the past two years, the dems have had a majority in congress.   Before that, the unemployment numbers had rivalled the Clinton years.
