I recieved my new Born Free news letter today and they were talking about an ele named Jenny from Dallas.....
Jenny the 32-year old female elephant lives in Dallas Zoo in a 1/3 acre compound. In May this year, Jenny’s only companion, KeKe had to be euthanased after she failed to recover from a severe case of colic, perhaps related to her disturbed behaviour of eating stones and dirt. This left Jenny alone. The Dallas Zoo officials have declared their intention to keep Jenny in the city and fast-track the construction of a new four acre elephant exhibit, while seeking out a new friend to be brought in to join her.
Why not let Jenny retire instead
Rather than bring more elephants to Dallas Zoo, why not use this opportunity to move Jenny to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee? There, Jenny could roam in a 300 acre African elephant enclosure with three other African elephants. The sanctuary has skilled, kindly staff, used to dealing with disturbed elephants from grim captive conditions in zoos and circuses.
(They currently have 14 Asian elephants roaming freely in two habitats totalling 2,400 acres of the sanctuary.)
What you can do:
We need to politely convince the Mayor of Dallas and the City Council to use this opportunity to put the well-being of Jenny first, and allow her to retire to the peace and tranquillity of The Elephant Sanctuary.
