For everything that goes well, something must go wrong. Perhaps not in an exact 50:50 ratio, but enough times to keep a balance in life. Somethings will work out for you, while others will not. When something works out you continue doing what you're doing - because it's working. However when something doesn't work for you, you survey it after the fact and do what needs to be done to change it.
For Seifer, something was about to go wrong, something, that he did not expect.
It looked like just another day that ended in 'y' in sunny San Diego. The FWA might not have been as blooming as it was a month or so ago, but it was still doing just fine making the transition into their new home. Many wrestlers the past couple of weeks have taken some time off, some were relaxing at home with their families, others were increasing their knowledge, while still some others were training and making sure that when it was go time, they'd be ready. For Seifer, he was doing a multitude of things. As Attitude Champion he felt not only a sense of pride representing FWA, but a sense of duty, of responsibility.
Seifer steps out of a moderate sized building with tables and chairs and a nearly finished inside and locks it up, the outside wasn't finished yet but there was a little deck that looked like it could house quite a few tables. The sign up on the building read simply 'The Cafe'. As Seifer is about to leave a woman walks, or nearly runs up to him, she appears a little out of breath.
"Seifer! I'm so glad I caught you."
"Was on my way out," he looks up and sees that it's FWA's own Sienna Taylor. "Hey Sienna, sure, you can have an interview."
"How'd you know?"
"You mean besides the cameraman behind you and the fact that you probably ran here to catch me?"
Seifer unlocks the door and they step inside, he removes a couple of chairs as they take their seats by a table.
"Haha yeah, they told me that you'd be working on getting The Cafe together. I can't believe it's really happening." She turns to the camera now, "For those who are unaware the famous Cafe out of Defiance, Ohio is opening up a brand new location here in San Diego thanks in large part to Seifer who is funding the entire thing. Why would you do that?"
"I'd offer you something to drink or eat, but we're not at that stage yet. The real question is Sienna, why not? The Cafe of FWA has always been a staple in FWA history, a place FWAers could come and take a moment or two to interact with some fans in a relaxed environments, enjoy some of their favorite meals, and be themselves but not having to deal with the hassles of our job, and everyday life. Kind of like a home away from home, so to speak. Well when FWA moved out West while many people were excited about it, I know there were also a good deal who would miss The Cafe. So I decided why not bring a piece of the past, into the future? Why not have FWA's very own Cafe right here. I hear some of the staff's kids want to move to Cali and start up their young lives and because their parents work in the original, they'd be guaranteed jobs since they did give me permission to build a franchise."
"That sounds amazing, it really gives San Diego that homey feel now. Well, once it's open."
"That's exactly what I'm trying to accomplish. Besides, the move out here has been promoted for a classy atmosphere, so where better than Coronado? I realize putting it in the Pacific Beach or Mission Beach it would do far more business with the influx of college kids in the area, but Coronado is a cut above and it still attracts more than enough tourists. Just a short drive over the bridge from downtown and bam, you're nearly there."
"Well it seems that you've been keeping yourself busy, its been a while since your last match."
"It has, but I haven't been as active as I was last year, dealing with a lot of business oriented things and such when I know it's time to wrestle I just kick my gears into high level and get ready to roll."
"Speaking of kicking gears into high level, this week it looks as though you're going to have to do that, you're facing Ramirez."
"So I've heard. Been a little too busy to get around to cutting a promotion but hey, better late than never. Besides you know when it comes to me I'll give ya everything and more. I look forward to facing Rez, he's become a good friend of mine the past few years, but I'm also a bit skeptical."
"Skeptical?"
"This whole mix matching, obviously they're doing it because Carnifexi is the only team to actually have the balls to step up and challenge Sparrow and I. We're ready and we've been waiting, for anyone, to challenge us so I'm much looking forward to it when that day comes. For now though, the last time I wrestled I was for sure I had Deus cornered and down, but alas a whole horde of people decided to stick their noses into our business and the match was thrown out. As Attitude Champion I wanted that chance to prove that Seifer was the Supreme Pillar in FWA. Alas, I'll have to wait for another opportunity."
"Before we get back to Ramirez, I wanted to ask you about opportunities and the Attitude Champion, specifically Malphas."
"Yes, what about?"
"Rumor has it he's left the building."
"Impatient pussy."
"I beg your pardon?"
"He seemed like a genuine person who wanted to learn about his life through his cousin Rez, learn the business, really get his feet wet. Turns out it seems all he wanted was quick, easy gold. He failed at becoming the number one contender and then cried controversy that led to a short referee strike and then begged to be given a shot, which he was rewarded, even though all he had to do was ask me. Now it turns out that as we near the PPV, Malphas is no where to be seen, he's already failed to promote past a past match. That to be shows that you don't have the patience it takes to make it in this business. You're not going to get everything handed to you on a silver platter. Maybe in those other rinky dink federations but here in FWA, they make you work for what you get. If you manage to get a championship it's because you've been tested and you were patient and you EARNED it. Kind of makes it a little more special knowing that you had to wait it out that much longer, feels more real, you know?"
"Comparisons could be made to the WWE, which in terms of success and longevity is good I think."
"Exactly. In terms of putting in your time and earning your stripes, absolutely. There are some active wrestlers right now who have been earning their stripes in FWA longer than I have, for instance and have gotten or are getting their dues. You've got Deus, the FWA World Champ, he recently got that opportunity. You've got Joe who just retired but he too had his reign. Isabella Taylor, the Championess who too had her shot. You've got Mr. Scarie who just came off a reign of terror. You've got the returning Davidson who at one point was able to stand in the glory. Finally you've got WRM who is getting his long over due shot at the Championship. See, I've been in federations where it only took a couple of months before I escalated into a championship title shot, but here I've had to learn patience and develop an appreciation for the beauty of wrestling even more so. The fact that I've been able to do so is surprising too because I've been known to be a titleholic. Sure, I have two championships right now and I cherish both, but that's not the same as being able to call yourself World Champion. WRM gets that shot soon, and I've no doubt that soon after my time will come. So will Ramirez's and perhaps even Tsunami's who has been busting his ass for a while as well. Like they say, good things come to those who wait, Malphas apparently didn't want to wait, so he won't get his shot. All the better though, he would have gotten stomped out as I've got plans for my Attitude Championship and him taking it from me wouldn't have worked out right. But I digress, let's get back to the topic at hand."
"You go one on one with Ramirez. You two have been blowing FWA away since they got some extra backing from Redding and decided not to close down. It's a match many are looking forward to especially since the first 'encounter' didn't work so well for you."
"Actually Sienna it worked great for me, and it's like I've been saying for a while now. The circumstances of that tag match pissed me off a great deal because it was a test. I was putting my partner through a test and she unfortunately failed miserably. She had let me down in the tag title match that resulted in two teams being named champion, and then after I gave her a pep talk and got her all pumped up, she decided to not promote her match against Ramirez. That to be, is a big sign of disrespect, I don't even care IF I'm not involved. So when the tag match came along I conducted a test, if she put out her own effort without riding on my back like she had the past few months, I'd get down to business and make sure we won. She didn't do a god damn thing so I cut a brief promotion saying what I had to say and that was that. The match itself was where she really saw how pissed I was. You saw it."
"I did, you barely got any offense in."
"Indeed. I'm not proud of doing it because I pride myself on giving everyone I face a solid effort, but it needed to be done. I needed to let her see exactly how pissed I was, a sort of sign of things to come. I completely jobbed that match out and in turn, Deus pinned me. Turns out that worked great for him because he used it to push himself to the next level and as a solid reason as to why he should be given a shot against Scarie."
"A lot of people might say you're protecting yourself."
"Then those people don't pay attention to my promotions, I've stated this before, but I've no problem doing so again. I did what I did for a reason and as we later saw, I dropped the dead weight and aligned with my good friend Sparrow and the rest there is history. I'm in no way taking anything from Carnifexi as both men are great competitors and even if I went balls to the wall, it doesn't mean I would have won anyways. That's why I only mention it when it is brought up, do I consider it a loss? Not really, I wasn't trying to win. Do I accept it as a loss, of course, I did lose and I'm man enough to admit that. Likewise I wouldn't expect them to think they actually beat 'Seifer' as I only had a few punches and kicks, a forearm here and a slam or two there and that ain't me. This isn't arrogance as you can look at my past matches for years but no one is that cocky or good to put me down without me getting in more than that, trust me on that one but if you don't the proof is in the pudding. THAT is why however, I'm anticipating this match. I like both guys and I did them an injustice, Deus we've fought a couple times now, but Ramirez this is our first real chance."
"Sounds to me like you're giving them a measure of respect."
"Why shouldn't I? Just because I'm a talented star and have done a lot doesn't mean I can't show respect. Unlike some people however, when I do it's not a sign of weakness because when it's time to get down to business I'll go wherever I feel like going and do whatever I feel like doing to get the job done, that is what I plan on for this match."
"You said you're looking forward to it, anticipating it. You two have also known each other for a while now, is there anything else you'd like to mention, perhaps maybe PWT?"
A grin immediately spreads on the corner of Seifer's mouth. Ah yes, he remembers.
"Why, I'm so glad you brought that up Sienna! Back in PWT Ramirez and I were scheduled to meet in the second round of their King of PWT tournament. Little before the match was announced he had to take a leave, no one really knew why; the match wasn't booked and I automatically advanced to the next round, something I wasn't too fond of. Back then Rez was this new kid on the block training under the tutelage of Legacy, another friend of mine, and was undefeated. It's not that I didn't like him, it's that I wanted the chance to show him how the top tier got down and I wanted the chance to be the first to put him down. The first to exploit his mistakes for my own personal gain... and pleasure. Well, I didn't get that chance; when he returned the next week he cited a friend in trouble and he went to his aid. I understand that, but I still didn't like it, I felt as if I was robbed of an opportunity to finally test myself as it has been a while since I had had a real test."
That smile only continues to get bigger.
"That chance, that opportunity, has come back Sienna. I may be a little late in promoting the match but that doesn't mean anything. That has no outcome on the match itself as now that I'm ready and focused with no other distractions from my outside of wrestling life in my way, it's go time for me. It's time to take Rez and give him a dose of reality. We all know he's good, but sometimes those who are too good can end up being bad for a company. You go undefeated for so long you begin to feel that everyone is beneath you, you begin to feel that you're above the business. I know Rez is a more laid back and humble guy expect when he is put up against competitors of sufficient inferiority. Well this time he isn't facing someone inferior, he's facing someone at the very least his equal. Which means that an arrogant attitude and attempt at breaking me down will result in failure. Right now I look at it as my duty to save FWA persae from what an undefeated Ramirez continuing down his path of 'Execution' could do. You were dubbed FWA's Executioner because of your dominance but in a business that thrives on new faces and personalities to join our family fray, we can't afford to have people 'executed' left and right. Not everyone here is willing to take the long road to glory, a lot of people want the shortcut route, yet even those people are welcomed here, it's just that running them off will do us no good in the long term preservation. That is a compliment Rez, nestled inside an insult. That's a testament to how far you've come but also a warning that something has to change, as I just said, it's my duty to make that change. One loss is all it takes to put things in perspective, because I like you, I'm going to help you."
"Oh man that was interesting, I can't wait to hear what he's got to say to that."
Seifer stands up now, Sienna follows suit.
"My dear, there is far more where that came from. As they say, this is only the beginning."
With that he shows them the door, Sienna and the cameraman exit and Seifer locks up again. They turn around and shake hands as the revving of an engine is heard loud and clear as a black BMW with pitch black tinted windows speeds up to the curb. The window rolls down just enough for a small brown package to be pushed out, window goes off, tires burn, car speeds away and out of view.
"What the hell?!"
Seifer walks over and picks up the package using caution, but calmness. It's completely unmarked.
"Is that for you?"
"I guess so. This could get interesting."
No more is said, Seifer remains mysterious about it, flicks out his keys and makes his way towards his car with package in tow as we fade. |
