The air seemed cold, damp, and distant. A yawn emits from Seifer as if he had just awoken. He infact had woken from a very long sleep, twenty years to be exact. He sits in the infirmary bed, leaning against the wall, stretching his legs out. His mind wandering back to when he was warmed, what that felt like for him.
It was his first warming.
Shortly after the wars with the Inhibitors, or wolves as others have called them, there had been a dire need to recruit beings with the most fascinating, intelligent, tactical and genius like minds, non humans and humans alike as a way to begin the long rebuilding process. They thought the war was finally over. Seifer Jacobs of course, fell into this very category, having seen many, many wars take place and having played a large part in quite a few of them. Seifer, wanted no part in this and thus while onboard Ascendancy of Light he made the decision to freeze himself. It was a decision that had actually already been made months prior when word traveled around that Seifer and his wife Rebecca were both killed during the final Inhibitor attack before they retreated, still for reasons unknown. Seifer was aware that if he had not been presumed dead then the Cojoiners, the most powerful entity would go and find him, force him down and put implants in his head like they had done so many others. Seifer wanted none of this because while the power struggle between the Cojoiners and the Demarches would only continue as they had prior to knowledge of the Inhibitors lurking once again, he knew that the others wouldn’t be powerful enough and probably wouldn’t believe in his conquest and thus he decided to go it alone.
The Inhibitors would return one day. And this time, Seifer knew, they would rid of everyone and everything. These machine like creatures had once eliminated an entire race from existence long before the world Seifer was born on, Earth, ever even existed. It was there way of trimming down the universe, knowing that other cultures would rise again but they too would be just as ignorant to their presence as the others have been. Yet this time we got lucky and managed to hold them back long enough with the Cache. At least that was what most people thought. Odds are they were just gathering more information before they came in for the final kill. There was however, a way to stop them. Seifer had believed he discovered this way while swimming in the seas of the pattern jugglers. It was what he saw while swimming that sparked this entire mission. The trip to the planet Helina, three galaxies from where they had originally started in the Resu system, to figure out if there was indeed a way. It was obviously a long trip, one that would take a good twenty to twenty five years, depending on if there were any interruptions. Seifer spent the first couple years awake, making sure things ran smoothly and the journey would be a successful one, then he was frozen and informed his crew to only waken him once they were nearing. His wife, Rebecca, had been frozen too. She didn’t have to but she had made the decision to as well. But Seifer sensed that he had been the only one who was warmed.
A soft, machine like buzzing fills the room as Seifer turns his head to see one of the servitors sliding it’s way over to where Seifer was. It was no more than four feet tall as its silver structure was gleaming in the low light. The machine scans Seifer and nods it’s head.
“Everything is in order.?/FONT>
“No damage??Seifer questioned for the sake of questioning, knowing that he could have been frozen and warmed a thousand times over and nothing would ever be wrong with him after it had happened. For regular humans and others, it was not something they should do too often or too much in their lifetime. The majority of beings had been warmed at least once before, five to eight times in a lifetime was the average though. It was how you kept alive when traveling across galaxies without aging assuming you were a mere mortal. Of course Seifer decided to do it because there was nothing else he could do at the time, it wasn’t as if he could acquire more knowledge about where they were heading, he had all he needed to already and knew if anything came up he would be informed of it upon his warming.
“None at all.?/FONT>
Good, Seifer thought to himself. Even though he had been expecting that. He was after all, immortal. But part of him was being on the safe side and asking nonetheless, it was his first warming after all, his body still felt stiff and he wanted to ensure that his brain wasn’t feeling the same way.
“When will this stiffness go away??/FONT>
“Should be within?the next couple of hours.?/FONT>
Seifer nodded, stretching once more as he rose and made his way towards the door.
“Where’s Rem??/FONT>
“On his way.?/FONT>
“Guess I should wait then.?/FONT>
Seifer took a seat back down and waited for no longer than a minute as the metal doors slid open and there stood his longtime friend Rem. Seifer stood up and shook his hand as the two made their way into the corridor, no doubt heading up to the bridge or Rem’s private quarters.
“So how long has it been Rem??/FONT>
“A good twenty years my friend.?/FONT>
Seifer shakes his head, it hadn’t felt that long. “You still look good. I take it Rebecca hasn’t been warmed??/FONT>
Rem simply shakes his head. “A situation has arisen Seifer. Well two have actually, one isn’t of much importance, simply refers to a computer intelligence claiming that there is no knowledge of yours or Rebecca’s existence after Earth was destroyed, that you two aren’t truly immortal. The other is of importance to our mission... that is the only reason I warmed you. I’ll let you in on the details when we arrive to my quarters.?/FONT>
“Then tell me about this computer intelligence.?/FONT>
“Well it was engineered by the Hyperion Human Initiative and built by the Laxor Corp fifteen years ago.?/FONT>
“When the vast majority still thought we were dead.?/FONT>
“Though upon further inspection it’s primary focus is on being a memory bank for all things Earth oriented, beginning and end.?/FONT>
Seifer nods, “That makes sense. The humans created it shortly after the war.?/FONT>
“But the Earth was destroyed centuries ago.?/FONT>
“Yes, but these type of AO machines that they claim holds vast knowledge over everything usually only last a hundred or so years if they’re particularly good. I predict this one will only last for another sixty years or so before they update and create another one. As much as it pains me to say this since I am indeed from Earth, it’s a shame Earth had to be destroyed and thus left the majority of humans at a handicap. For we entered a whole nother world, universe actually, where we quickly learned the lesson in humility. Or they did at least for I didn’t build my futuristic city just for looks. In which we {humans} weren’t nearly as intelligent as they once thought. Of course had Earth still been around that could have changed and the humans might have played a much larger role in the war against the Inhibitors rather than playing fourth string. But alas, that wasn’t to be the case. So I can understand if it would be unaware of our existence shortly after Earth was destroyed. Though that is just a testament at how behind the humans truly were and haven’t been able to update information on every human who was born on Earth. Dah well, one day they might get their chance, surely as this information passes they will use the databases of the Cojoiners or the others and acquire the needed information if they wish for their systems to have complete accuracy. Did it say anything else in the database??/FONT>
“In regards to Rebecca, something along the lines of her being a mental patient.?/FONT>
Seifer lets out a bit of a laughter, that was quite a stretch. “I see. And myself??/FONT>
“You were proclaimed to be a series of clones, bad ones at that.?/FONT>
“Well I guess whomever put that information in is soon going to have to update it with the correct information. That or they surely have been reading into Dangerously files, where he had admitted to being cloned before and even had clones running around in the wrestling business.?He is silent for a moment, he had an exceptional memory and now a feeling of nostalgia came over him when speaking of the wrestling business. A sport he had competed in such a long time ago. “Besides, looking at my list of accomplishments and things I’ve done over the years, even in the wrestling business, I’d say this was more of a practical joke, unless they really did forget to add this into Dangerously's file, that was probably it though.?/FONT>
He shrugs, not much caring for petty things like this.
“Anything else of importance??/FONT>
“Well nothing of it was rather important. But no.?/FONT>
“How far until we reach Helina??/FONT>
“We’re three months away. But with this new information, it may end up taking much longer.?/FONT>
He leaves it as that as Seifer doesn’t say another word, knowing that he would be informed of the situation as soon as they got to his quarters where no doubt some more higher ups and trusted members of the crew were awaiting. The two make it to an upper level and enter Rem’s quarters, as for now Ascendancy of Light continues on towards her destination.
