A new co-worker of mine was asking me for advise on a color she had done a few days before. She couldn't understand why the lighter formula she used on the client would not budge. I pondered it for a minute, then said well, maybe she had a color in her hair? And the stylist said she did. I looked at her strangely, and said, well you know that haircolor does not lift haircolor, how could you have been a hairstylist for 28 years and not know that? She said well Clairol did! And then another new stylist jumped in with, yeah, Clairol did! I told her but that's the law of haircolor, the primary rule, everyone knows that. She said you can lift a color with clairol if you put a filler on it first.  I've never heard of that, and it goes against everything I've ever been taught. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Never heard of this before.
It is frustrating when a colour client wants to go lighter the next time and they dont realize that one colour cant remove a previous one. I wish that colour would remove colour...how easy would that be??

yeah, a tint can lift a tint, but it takes a lot of time, and you wont get as MUCH lift as you would if you used good old powder lightener aka. BLEACH.

It definitely depends on the manufacturer. I have used wella, socolor, and verocolor all of which have the color does not lift color rule. They don't either. But when the one stylist that started working with me told me that chi does I was amazed. She's an educator for Farouk and she used it on me and it lifted. The only thing is that I've recently found out is that no other color or bleach would lift out chi. So basically I'd have to grow it out, use chi or stay with what I have. Marla

Sorry never got back to you on this one. I don't know how many it would do, only that I was about a 4 and went to a 6. Not sure if it does more. I didn't like the way it faded though. Even on my new growth that was colored with chi faded to an orangey tone. Marla

just took a chi color class yesterday and the educator said the chi color line will lift a least 3 shades of it's own color, but if you use chi color to lift a different color product the results are unpredictable. great products , really enjoyed the class.

we did a chi class at our salon as well, they did recommend that you don't use it on anything lighter than a lever six otherwise your pushing your luck with the texture of the hair afterwords.  And I agree with Marla it fades out to a nasty color or at least the chi hilift reds do.

Hi all the old saying color does not lift color. Atleast not very even.  I know i have weave high lift color like redkind double blonde or matirx ul seriese and got some lightness but thouse color are really just a low level bleach with a color in it. I have never heard about filler lifting i alway think of filler as a direct dye to fill the hair not as a lifting agent. On chi i have used there power free bleach to lift but how can color lift with so little to bost with? i like to know

i work with Clairol everydday it does not lift color.  it may make it a little brassy but it is not meant to lighten each other.  The rule of color: COLOR DOES NOT LIGHTEN COLOR.. We learned that on our first day of color class in beauty school.

Hey, don't you love it when you watch other stylist lie through there teeth to the client and then try to convince you your wrong!  I had  a co- worker tell her cleint that because she had color on the ends that she was putting the color on it first to lighten it! Surprise the roots were lighter than the rest of the color and the client didn't like it and she has to redo it. Needless to say the owner wasn't to happy about this. How many times has that been drilled into your head color doesn't lift color.
