This subject is now hitting my mailbox through the Sara Moon website on
a very regular basis. I would very much appreciate some assistance in
tracking down the source of this rumour as it is causing me a great
deal of frustration.

It was agreed a long time ago that it is OK to use the art of Sara Moon
for Stationery and Tags etc, PROVIDED THAT: The image used does not
exceed 100dpi and is no more than 600 pixels along it greatest length.
The image MUST include the words 'Copyright Sara Moon' and should
include the website address 'www.sara-moon. com', both to be easily
visible.

My best guess is that MSN started this ball rolling some time ago by
alerting their users to their contention that the notice offered on the
Sara Moon website was not valid as it is only a fan site and therefore
has no authority to offer use of the works. This believed notice was
apparently issued a couple of years ago, at least that's when I heard
of it first, BUT no authorised person from MSN or any other official
body has ever challenged me directly for proof of validity. The fact is
of course, that permission was only given on the website once lines of
communication had been opened with Bijan, and the matter agreed.

If I am asked by MSN (or such), I will furnish proof of my authority.
In the meantime, I will say what I have said to so many in recent times
and that is this:

I have authority from Bijan to handle all matters relative to the
marketing of his work world wide. Specifically on copyright, and to
prove beyond doubt that I have some authority here too, I have the
right, though EBAY, to stop any auction at any time, whether the
listing has bids or not, at the click on one button. In fact have had
to do so many times, where sellers use terms such as 'Like Sara Moon',
or I where I know the lister to be selling illegal copies, and so on.
That facility, through the eBay VeRO Program takes a LOT of securing as
you can imagine. This through the non-trading eBay ID: vero4sara-moon,
which conducts continuous searches world wide of all listings using the
words Sara Moon. All are welcome to go and check this ID using the
COMMUNITY tab at the top right of any eBay website world wide. Full
details will follow entering 'vero4sara-moon' in the 'Find A Member'
box. Also see VeRO Program in the eBay Help Files for more information
on the depth of this eBay Intellectual Property Rights and Copyright
Tool.

I believe that the use of Sara Moon art in Signature Tags etc -
provided due credit is given to Sara Moon - helps promote the art
works, helps keeps the work in the public eye and as such helps keeps
the art 'alive'.

If any member is approached by any true AUTHORITY (eg MSN, Yahoo etc)
on this matter I would beg you to direct them to me at john@sara-
moon.com.

With apologies for the necessary length of this reply.

Sincerely,

John.

Sara Moon - Artist

For many years, Sara Moon's art was used without permission.  The artist could not
be located and no one knew anything about Sara Moon.  Sara Moon's art was used without the proper credits and also with the proper credits, but it was unknown if this artist would allow their art to be used in tags.  Until two years ago Sara Moon's art wasn't allowed to be used in any of the groups I co-managed or managed.

John Moulton, artist had several prints of Sara Moon and loved this art.  He searched the Internet and was unable to believe there was nothing out there at all on Sara Moon! He decided to head his own gallery with the words “WHERE ARE YOU SARA??nbsp; For two years nothing came. Then an email from a visitor to the site alerted him to a new Yahoo Group formed by world-wide fans of Sara Moon. He joined only to find that everything known was rumour and conjecture: The strongest belief was that Sara Moon was actually an Iranian male, who, when all of his art had been destroyed by fire, had gone to live in Germany as a recluse and could not be found. Approaches to Verkerke resulted in dismissive responses and Red Baron no longer existed. Further alerts and questioning statements were posted around the Internet, begging ANYONE who knew ANYTHING to come forward and tell their story. Beyond more rumours, NOTHING happened for years.

During that time, Torill Nyhuus, who had started the Yahoo Group became unable to continue and asked if anyone could take over group management. The post fell to John, and the quest for Sara continued both within the group and through his website. Eventually John decided that this structure was not enough and he created a dedicated Sara Moon website into which everything that was known or speculated could be posted and the pleas for information could be the stronger.

For a while, gathering everything together created more confusion than clarity. Studying images, dates and signatures just added to the mystery. Styles of work and signatures varied so much that John became convinced that there were probably THREE “Sara Moon’s?at work here and therefore MAYBE, there had never been a real Sara Moon at all, just a group of artists contracted to create commercial images under the brand “Sara Moon? He dared to put the supposition forward on the site, in the hope such an assertion would drive those who knew differently to come forward --- Still nothing happened for a long time.

Then John learned the cross-stitch company Lanarte had challenged copyright on a number of patterns. When asked for proof of title, a document was sent detailing the artists agreement and signed Bijan D “Sara Moon? A copy came my way. Proof positive beyond doubt that the artist was (or had been!) out there somewhere!

Then, out of the blue came an email, written in broken English: “Hallo, this is Sara Moon …?it read, and invited John to make contact. in which he did, and nothing further came back. Then another contact, a relative it said. John replied. Nothing came back again for months and then one mail, more months, then another. Then all went quiet again. John tried to convince himself that these were hoaxes, but something inside him begged that he should not be too convinced.

So, when the day came that John received his first email from Thomas Laukamm, he just didn’t know how to respond. Here at last was someone with an excellent command of the English language telling John that he considered himself Bijan’s best friend.

The rest, as they say is history -
and a new chapter awaits ...

Bijan Djamalzadeh

Sara Moon is a he and used the penname Sara Moon because his art was pre 1940s and he was afraid that someone in that era would chastise him for drawing this types of art. Forget his real name but he has now admitted that he is Sara Moon and given permission for taggers to use them the last that I heard about the revocations.

John traveled to meet Bijan. John was pulling up outside his house, an attractive white (seemingly) single story building on a sloping site a pristine sign on the wall reads “Sara Moon Studio ... ?John shook his head a little, still not quite able to believe he was there, at Bijan’s front door.

John learned that Bijan's Father had wanted him to study medicine, but Bijan was drawn to textiles and design, creating many successful patterns. But his first love was always his art and he was eventually commissioned by Red Baron to create the first sixteen of the now famous Sara Moon images. International recognition was soon his.

There are still questions about permission to use this artist.  We have written to John Moulton for a no link permission due to adult on the site.  Even though permission isn't directly give by Bijan, he has granted John permission to allow his art to be used in tags, etc.  John also brought back prints from his trip to Germany and has been selling them for Bijan to members of his yahoo group, ebay and whomever he has contacted.  I had the chance to buy his art before it was put up on Ebay.  I've been a member of John's yahoo group for many years.
At the present time Bijan is recovering from heart surgery.  He was hospitalized for over three months and came very close to death.  He has returned home with his wife Cristel and is recuperating at the present time.
