I'd appreciate any opinions, experiences and/or feedback concerning the use of "nautilus" type exercise machines for bone, joint and muscle strengthening and hopefully to help relieve the weakness, aches, pains and swelling that I currently experience.

I'm at the point, whereas mild to moderate housework (from lifting a coffee decanter, sorting through paperwork or magazines, to sweeping the floors and carrying dry laundry becomes an exercise in machocism.  This then creates a vicious cycle of guilt, feeling worthless and weak, which leads to increased depression and a sense of dependency upon my husband.

I've always considered myself to be independent, so when I do get some temporary relief, I start pushing forward again and taking two steps back.

My husband is supportive of me and is willing to act as my "personal trainer."  He has extensive experience with weight lifting and staying in shape.  He suggests a progressive program focusing upon muscle groups around the major afflicted areas for starters.

I look forward to hearing your responses.  Thank you!

My understanding is that pool therapy is better, but resistance reps should be ok. Be careful not to overdo.
Do not take my word for it, as I don't have fibro, this is just what I have picked up from others. Check with your doctor (like you haven't heard that before)

I am so sorry I didn't answer this sooner please forgive me.
As far as I have been told you need to do light exercise with fibro.  Pool and very low impact is what has been suggested.  You can build up to more but I have no idea how far you can go.  I will copy your post and put it in general so others can answer they may have a better idea.

well I have done the hydrotherapy (heated pool) under the advice of my doctor that was made to work with my fibro.  Hate to bring down the parade on exercise but My experience was at the LOWEST level of repititions - 5 each - sent me into a major flare - had to miss a few more sessions.  Only did this three times a week for 30 minutes sessions.  Only 6 exercises with time between.  I am like Smilie in that no matter what I try to do around the house I take one step forward toward independence and end up two steps or more backward.  I want more than anything to be "normal" again and get my own housework done.  I also have a bad back problem which does not help the situation.  Getting ready to start taking narcotic drugs to deaden the pain.  I am sick of always hurting and not being able to do anything - even walking to my car to go somewhere is a chore that hurts like crazy!!  I have an electric wheelchair now.  When will this illness stop getting worse!!!!

Sadly Fibro I think it will only stop getting worse when they find the right meds to help the pain.  I know I have only had help for a few weeks but the difference is incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!  The patch helps so much I don't care that it is a narcotic at all.  If it helps who cares.  I want my life and in the pass couple weeks I have started getting it back, I am even driving again :) :) :)

It isnt covered here. I have been told to do the water arobics but It cost to join the health club here. It should be a class like regular physical therapy but isnt in our state.

If you have a doctor that is willing to push for it you can get it.  But it is a lot of work on the doc's part :( :( :(
