The Infiniti Hybrid expected to debut in 2010 will be capable of 120km/h on battery power alone. Not sure about the range.
The 2010 Prius will have a lithium ion pack for improved electric only range.
The Fisker Automotive Karma is an interesting design. A plug in hybrid sedan with a solar panel roof. MSRP will be $80k. The first 100 will be delivered to pre order customers in late 2009. Afterwards Fisker plans to start up dealerships in the US and sell 15k cars per year.
Details are coming in slowly on prototypes so the info i've given could change.

That is fantastic news.  I am glad to see that others are taking the lead in tech inovation to solve numerous problems that such vehicles have.  When money is involved, things happen quickly.  Thanks for the up dates.

Vampy & Lonbear -

Here's the challenge - - - make an AFFORDABLE (say about $25,000) car (or truck, or SUV) that has a range of at least 400 miles that either burns fossil fuel at 98% or more efficiency OR that uses an affordable renewable fuel with a minimal environmental impact.  An $80,0000, or even a $40,000 car isn't the answer for most people (i.e., the general public).

Gen,
Remember when autos cam on the scene?  The average person could NEVER have afforded one.  It took a man like Ford to take current technology, made it workable, improved it where necessary, and found a way to make an average Joe like you and I able to afford it.  I doubt our ages are very different, except for Vampy-she can't be over 25 , so we may live to see these things affordable.  I consider ALL of your points valid.  Range and affordability.  Maybe this generation of scientists and engineers will figure it out.
