HARRY POTTER, OUR HERO, Part I

Big Daddy: so, who's your fav hero?

EvonneT.Story: when i had to name 3

i chose Einstein as numbe4 1

Big Daddy: or is it HERO!!!!

EvonneT.Story: lol

i like HERO!

Big Daddy: tres non traditional

EvonneT.Story: who is your top hero?

Big Daddy: why Odysseus!

EvonneT.Story: who hooo!

You are well read

you even have the book for tonight :) [THE HERO WITH A THOUSAND FACES]

Big Daddy: I can really identify with the gods messing with a guy!

lol I am a Campbell fan

EvonneT.Story: i like the story better than The Book of Job

I "get" The Book of Job

but geez

PAINFUL!

Big Daddy: I guess!

How are you this evening Mr Cash?

the man in black: look there are two of me

EvonneT.Story: MIB X 2

the man in black: cool

Big Daddy: lol!

EvonneT.Story: who is your top hero MIB?

the man in black has left.

the man in black: awww

EvonneT.Story: lol

the man in black: don't have one

EvonneT.Story: not even an honorable mention?

the man in black: it depends on what I am reading at the time

Big Daddy: John Wayne? Mother teresa? Ron Jeremy?

EvonneT.Story: harry potter?

the man in black: uh no

yes

Big Daddy: so, does the HP series follow the Hero's Path, ala STAR WARS?

the man in black: sure seems to

EvonneT.Story: I would say so

the man in black: it has all the archetypes

EvonneT.Story: with the stages of alchemy too

Big Daddy: well HP does seem to reject the 'call', but not very hard

EvonneT.Story: 1) The call to adventure that the hero has to accept or decline

the man in black: he certainly fights against the convention of the powers

harry fighta against that too

EvonneT.Story: It certainly starts out with the usual difficulty with life for the hero

1.a. the world of suffering or anguish

EvonneT.Story: and Harry wishes to escape it

Hagrid is a very kewl call to adventure too

lol

delivery guy of the message anyway

Big Daddy: and HP has his Obi Wan

the man in black: doesn't every hero?

EvonneT.Story: 1.b.When the world is no longer endurable the hero is ripe for the calling

That is the formula according to Joseph Cambell MIB

Big Daddy: any hero worth their salt...

EvonneT.Story: The monomyth

Big Daddy: Lucas credits J Campbell for the STAR WARS storyline

EvonneT.Story: 1.c. Usually there is some refusal of the call in the beginning

According to Lucas, he consciously applied the formula

Big Daddy: yeah, what you said

EvonneT.Story: lol

I really cannot think of a moment when Harry hesitated initially though

can you?

Big Daddy: just before hagrid takes Harry off in the first book, but HP didn't have to think long about getting the heck out of Dodge

EvonneT.Story: then we are still in the formula with the story

Joseph Campbell states that our birth itself it part of this call to adventure.

that is where we come in

;-)

at least at first

the man in black: yeah, at his birthday in the shack

Big Daddy: MIB is right

EvonneT.Story: I never realized that before!

the birthday is there too!

Big Daddy: only natural hesitancy, a half giant shows up,

well come on Harry

the man in black: and he continues to hesitate all through each book - he hesitates to conform to requirements of the teachers

harry is a rebel hero

EvonneT.Story: there is always something at least a little different about a hero

what is different about them becomes very special later

Big Daddy: The hero, in their adventure, gains knowledge by testing limits

EvonneT.Story: not following the crowd is part of harry's strength

That brings us to all the parts of STAGE 2

The road of trials

2. Meeting a mentor

Big Daddy: "How do you know what it is YOU are supposed to do, if you are doing what everyone tells you you SHOULD be doing"

EvonneT.Story: that one is easy in the potter story

Big Daddy: Carlos has Don Juan

EvonneT.Story: The mentor is an especially sweet element in the Potter story

funny in the Don Juan tale

lol

Big Daddy: Odysseus has Pallas Athena

the man in black: he has so many

EvonneT.Story: I would say that Dumbledore is the big mentor initially who is like Harry's father he never knew

Big Daddy: The others, while passing on wisdom, don't quite meet the Archtype 'mentor'

or...

mentor for specific situations?

the man in black: yeah, I was going to say it is situational

EvonneT.Story: who always acknowledges him?

Big Daddy: I can't see Dumbledore teaching harry about Quiddich

EvonneT.Story: supports him whether he is present or not?

the man in black: hagrid

EvonneT.Story: secretly sends him a special broom

Big Daddy: Dumbledore IS the Prime Mentor tho...

EvonneT.Story: hagrid is great

and warm

big heart

Big Daddy: yes

the man in black: I think each of them have aspect to mentor

EvonneT.Story: but Dumbledore in my read is the prime force

Big Daddy: yes

the man in black: probably

Big Daddy: as per the Archtype

EvonneT.Story: he is also the one that seems to see the end picture of where this is going

he has the vision

hero's make lots of deals, friends, and receive all sorts of help along the way

and may have more than one mentor as well

Big Daddy: The same character John Wayne played in SANDS OF IWO JIMA

teaches his troops to be 'good marines', and then is killed off, ala Dumbledore

EvonneT.Story: To me Hagrid simply loves Harry. He helps him out of love. I am not sure of the vision part. I don't feel Hagrid has the vision of where Harry is going.

Big Daddy: and Obi Wan

EvonneT.Story: Allies

Hero's build allies.

or maybe allies help build hero's too

Big Daddy: Gilgamesh had Enkidu (sp?)

EvonneT.Story: 2.b. So crossing the first threshold, the hero gets scared... a stranger in a strange land.

Hmmmm

Where would that one come in?

Big Daddy: one cannot become 'the hero' is one stays where it is safe

the hero has to 'exceed the boundries

EvonneT.Story: and in the Potter story? Where is the threshold?

this one

the first crossing

Big Daddy: so 'stranger in a strange land' is valid

EvonneT.Story: it is in lots of the myths

Big Daddy: the boat ride, kinda River Styxx

EvonneT.Story: because the hero is with the gods

and everything is different

Big Daddy: with, or seeking?

the man in black: going through the train station

Big Daddy: Having a god's support is vital, isn't it?

EvonneT.Story: the gat 9 and one-half?

the man in black: station 9 and 3/4

EvonneT.Story: oops!

Big Daddy: OK, I can see that....

EvonneT.Story: having to plunge yourself through a pillar

lol

that qualifies as scared

sometimes it is just odd

Big Daddy: but that is just a taste, the freshman boat ride really sets a tone of 'something different this way comes

the man in black: a gateway

a between place

EvonneT.Story: true going from one land to another

is really symbolized there

2.c. Now here is where the friends, allies and enemies are supposed to some in

2.d. along with stress

anxiety

and a urge to pack the whole thing in

the man in black has left.

EvonneT.Story: but not only does the hero find dangerous enemies

the man in black has left.

EvonneT.Story: but people who can help

MIB left twice

lol

Big Daddy: part of the education

LOL

EvonneT.Story: too bad

he is really good at the potter story

We covered meeting friends, enemies?

allies?

Big Daddy: like in the star wars story, HP has allies he never knew existed

EvonneT.Story: Now for the cookies from the dark side... as we love to say.

:D

2.e. The glimpse of the true, hidden self!

something that has been suppressed... denied

Big Daddy: OK....

EvonneT.Story: so the horcrux?

the dark forest where the spider is?

the mirror?

Big Daddy: OK!

EvonneT.Story: lol

Big Daddy: I am hazy on the spider part

EvonneT.Story: now that we are so far into this, I am trying to recall the points

Big Daddy: Luke when Darth reveals his paternity

EvonneT.Story: Luke literally has to "go to the dark side"

it is the only way he can win

you cannot fight what you cannot understand?

Big Daddy: ahem, no, Iraq disproves that notion, one cannot SUCCESSFULLY fight what one doesn't understand

who is the guy who has to roll the rock up that hill forever?

damn these drugs I am on

EvonneT.Story: and lose a liver?

Big Daddy: ohhh darn you!

no, I think that guy was chained to a rock...

EvonneT.Story: Sisyphus

Prometheus

I am thinking the magic mirror is too soon in the story to be this part

and it shows an illusion?

The mirror is explained by Dumbledore as something which “shows us nothing more or less than the deepest, most desperate desire of our hearts?/FONT>

Big Daddy: yup

EvonneT.Story: for the horcrux, Dumbledore and Harry literally have to enter a cave

EvonneT.Story: Do you recall what happens when retrieving the horcrux?

is there a time when harry gets a glimpse of his dark side there?

Big Daddy: I have not read any HP since the last movie came out, so i am very hazy on HP lore

Evonne, I am so sorry, but I must go, RL calls

and this was going so well too

good to 'see you' again

EvonneT.Story: Nighty night!

Big Daddy has left.

Our Hero, Part II

EvonneT.Story: hey corv!

Corvus: hey! did i miss things? *lol*

EvonneT.Story: yes!

hahahhahaha

all done

but i will be reposting soon

we did the harry potter story

but everyone had to leave at 10

Corvus: aah *lol* i had fallen asleep after work, and then had to go out for lightbulbs when i woke up...forgot all about chat tonight

cool cool

EvonneT.Story: it was Joseph Campbells monomyth

of the hero

we were trying to recall what was the moment when Harry had a peek at the dark side of himself

Corvus: semi familiar with that; common theme in a lot of stories, if you know where to look

he had that a couple times--there was one situation where he had to confront that who he is may well be just a result of the blast he recievd from Voldemort--i forget the exact circumstances of that though

EvonneT.Story: it has been awhile since i read the Potter tale

i was trying to recall what happened when he literally went into the cave for the horcrux

Corvus: i think it was around the same time that his schoolmates realized he spoke Parseltongue--snakespeak

EvonneT.Story: oh the Parseltongue is a good one!

because everyone else found it so dark

but it was a gift!

Corvus: yup

they largely found it dark because Voldemort was a known Parseltounge

it was associated with evil--same as snakes have ben for so long

EvonneT.Story: was there any element of having denied it through his life?

Corvus: mmm....

he wasn't aware of it until it was pointed out to him at the school actually....

he didn't realize he was speaking snake; to him he was speaking plain English...everyone else however heard him speaking in hisses

EvonneT.Story: it is really close to the formula

Corvus: and at the time in the school he was being accused of siccing the snake on another student--in truth he was trying to talk the snake down, to prevent it fom attacking

EvonneT.Story: 2.e con't. ..the hero glimpses the dark side of his true, hidden self he has always denied for most of his life.

EvonneT.Story: this brings us to 2.f. the supreme ordeal

Corvus: and if i'm not mixing up the storyline, later, he had to face the basilisk

EvonneT.Story: the hero attempts to use elements of his true self that terrified or shamed him before

EvonneT.Story: The final parts of the Potter tale are not in yet though

so we cannot do the final and third stage

Corvus: yup

EvonneT.Story: achieving the goal resulting in important self-knowledge

Corvus: i really should refresh myself on the story *lol* i haven't read any since the goblet of fire, i think

EvonneT.Story: who is your hero Corv?

Corvus: hmm....

i don't know, to be honest *lol*

the hero is usually an idealistic image that people want to emulate

EvonneT.Story: i chose Einstein

but i don't want the same hair

Corvus: *lmao* wishkin troll hair

hey auralia!

EvonneT.Story: i look like that in the morning

Corvus: Aur, i've been meaning to ask--why is your spirit bear slashed up?

EvonneT.Story: lol

Auralia: Hmmm, more details?

Corvus: looks like it was hit by a truck or somesuch

Auralia: My "spirit bear"

EvonneT.Story: i thought those were magic marks

Auralia: The marks on the artwork?

Corvus: the profile pic--i normally see them with a zig-zag arrow from the tail towards the heart

eyah

Auralia: They are - they of metaphysical symbols on it. are symbols representing the three heavens above, the earth below. You're used to seeing a Zuni bear - this one has a ton

Corvus: ah

Auralia: Sorry - laptop is skipping words.

Corvus: k, it must just be me then *lol*

Auralia: I thought you saw my Totem Bear in the Spirit realm and it was all hacked up - THAT would concern me! <grin>

EvonneT.Story: ;)

Corvus: *lol* nah

Corvus: though i think wolf is trying to get my attention again--i keep dreaming of my dead dog, and waking up realize it's not quite him.

Auralia: Ahhhh, pay attention corv. Wolf is a great teacher!

Corvus: neighbor's cats are indoor/outdoor; ive been keeping an eye out for the one because they tend to have some trouble getting him in the house in the mornings--and one of the other neighbor's car is leaking some unknown fluids.

EvonneT.Story: it was a sudden illness Auralia

i had never seen or heard of it before

but the lyme disease attacked an organ

Auralia: And lymes does not usually have a fever. Not even listlessness, so muc.h - more stiffness and joint pain

EvonneT.Story: and they could not do anything

in cat's Thomas has all the symptoms

it shows in a variety of ways

in people mostly stiffness and joint pain

EvonneT.Story: ...we were doing Joseph Campbells Journey of the Hero

EvonneT.Story: We did the Harry Potter story for most of it

Auralia: ::listens with interest::

EvonneT.Story: but we cannot finish with the HP story

because we don't know how it ends

Auralia: Why not? LOL! So we can make up our own ending!

Corvus: and on a side note, if wolf had anything other to say to me in dreams that "there's a cat in the window and i'm tryign to get it", i'd be a little more attentive *lol*

EvonneT.Story: lol

So the idea of the whole journey is the hero obtains or attains a goal or gift

Auralia: I vote Harry becomes the next Minister of Magic! Or the next headmaster of Hogwarts.

Corvus: Harry's goal throughout the series has seemed to be to confront--and defeat--his nemesis, Voldemort

Auralia: True, Corv. ::listens again::

EvonneT.Story: 3. The reward for finally seizing the goal is discovery of life's passion

and that steady and wonderful feeling of finally harnessing the true self

EvonneT.Story: the power of what you really are

Corvus: in some ways though, Voldemort seems to be set up as Harry's twin self--his Dark half....it's not clear throughout, but there hav been instances of it--harry's hero is his father in the series--and he's also been progressively integrating aspects of

Corvus: is father into himself

EvonneT.Story: all good possibilities!

Corvus: like the incident with the Patronus, when harry was jumping back and forth in time with Hermione--he thought his father was going to save him, but at the last minute, realized it wasn't his father but himself

EvonneT.Story: that is a wonderful part of the story

Corvus: and manifested his father's Patronus--the Stag

EvonneT.Story: 4.  after the hero discovers his true self, and lives authentically, he or she then begins the part of the journey that is the return to the "world"

there is the difficult road back

Corvus: which he did *lol* he moved forward(back) to his own time, after the incident of saving his own life, and his uncle's life

EvonneT.Story: where the hero may also be successful or fail

it seems sort of a bummer to get this gift and then fail to get back

Auralia: AKA, The Illiad?

EvonneT.Story: i can't seem to recall a story where they actually fail

[lots of stories where they fail at first]

Corvus: but then again, he's still in the world behind the world in a lot of ways--the storys not over yet ;)

EvonneT.Story: the Illiad is long

lol

long journey

LOOOOOONG

Auralia: Yes, it is. Classic.

EvonneT.Story: The Illiad is definitely one of the great heroic tales

Corvus: *lmao* i haven't read the lliad yet....and only parts of the oddysey in high school

EvonneT.Story: 5.  Usually the application of the gift benefits the world in some way or ways

[the actual application of the gift is important.  the test of the shaman worth their salt ;-)]

Auralia: This sounds very familiar to me.

EvonneT.Story: 5.a. there is also a point where the hero of our tale grades himself

the weighing of the scales

including a glimpse of his impending death

Auralia: Very Archetypel.

EvonneT.Story: Harry is told about his future life at one point?

married?

is he?

Auralia: He is?

EvonneT.Story: i can't recall if that is a dream i had or not

lol

Corvus: i think harry's been somewhat in the process of that during the latter books, particularly after voldemort is restored during the tri-wizard championship

EvonneT.Story: Dumbledore says something about Harry's life before dying?

Auralia: I have to reread that 6th book, it has faded.

Corvus: i know that divinatory teacher said some things to harry--some of which was fulfilled in the same book, but i don't remember all that was said

EvonneT.Story: 5.b. After all that, this is where the hero returns with the gift and teaches others

the future hero's or heroines of the ordinary world... for now. ;-)

Corvus: i'm gonna have to sit down and re-read the entire series when the last book is released...

EvonneT.Story: The true test of knowledge is to apply it.  [Then the task is to multiply it.]

Corvus: right now i'm almost finished Mists of Avalon again

Auralia: How does the new SciFi series Heros stack up to this Archetype?

EvonneT.Story: Star Wars is based on this formula

Corvus: i haven't watched any of Heroes

EvonneT.Story: I have not seen Heros either

Auralia: I'm sure ALL the great Hero flicks of our time are based on it.

Auralia: I can see the strings o this theory in Heros (I don't watch it much, but caught snippets of it)

The Hero, Interesting Hitch Part III

EvonneT.Story: Let me bring up a fascinating Iroquois tale "The Refusal of Suitors" that Joseph Campbell retells

In the film I watched, the interview with Jospeh Cambell, he mentions something fascinating.

EvonneT.Story: He brings up an Iroquoi story where a woman is chosen as a mate for a handsome creature of another realm. She accepts.

It turns into a nightmare and she escapes back to the ordinary world.

His comment on the story is that when one is not ready for this higher communiction with the gods, it appears to be demonic to them.

Campbell uses this myth to illustrate the greater danger facing a hero placing himself or herself in a higher field, but unwilling or unprepared to ascend to a higher consciousness.

Auralia: Now THAT'S interesting!

EvonneT.Story: http://www.the-office.com/bedtime-story/iroquois-simplethings.htm

Corvus: heh....i get that significantly *lol*

EvonneT.Story: link to the story he retold

Auralia: Cool.

EvonneT.Story: that one hit me right between the eyes

lol

i see it did you two also

Auralia: Been there, done that.

EvonneT.Story: lol

too funny

Corvus: my personal higher communication with "the gods' included some extended dialogue with an entitiy that identified itself as Demon in the sense of "troubling", rather than 'good vs evil"--but it was still disturbing *lol*

EvonneT.Story: i remember that

Corvus: and having Anubis smack you in the back of the head could count that way too :P *lol*

EvonneT.Story: i have had the same sort of experience

EvonneT.Story: i was so overwhelmed at one way communication due to the greater energy of the another entity

i was not the same for months

i thought it was an attack

and it took me awhile to readjust and "get it"

Corvus: heh

Auralia: I had a battle going on in the astral realm - for me - by two beings. One "dark", one "light" - but not necessarily "Good" and "evil" - I was quite surprised when the "dark" one won and WHOOSH! immediately moved into me. Many many years ago.

Scared the Bejeezus out of me back when I was naive nd innocent!

EvonneT.Story: so what did you do?

Auralia: Turned over and put myslef back into my body and went back to sleep - thought it would all be gone in the morning.

EvonneT.Story: and?

lol

Auralia: ::shrug:: Dunno. May bewhy I am who I am today.

Corvus: the first timei encountered a wolf in dreams, i ran from it--i thought it was going to attack me, and at the time, it had a wire cage-type of structure enclosing it's head, and a rope around it's neck--and was running straight at me, full tilt

it cornered me against a wall, and only then did i realize it wouldn't hurt me--and i reached out, and took the wire off

woke up a minute or two later

EvonneT.Story: did anything happen as a result of taking the cage off that translated to your everyday life?

Corvus: *shrug* im weird, and got weirder *lol*

Auralia: Corv, sounds like the lion with the thorn in it's paw story.

EvonneT.Story: it does.

a modern retelling

Corvus: i think i just "got' the meaning being pushed through by the recent dreams

Auralia: LOL! Or freudian slip...

Corvus: the wolf keeps appearing as my dead dog lately--it's him, but not quite him, which is how i know when i wake up it was really that wolf....

i think it's trying to make the point that i need to temper--to "domesticate" myself--in everyday life

Auralia: It's not attacking now that the wire has been removed?

Corvus: cause it usually shows up right beofre, or right after the dream takes a turn to the crazy, uncontrolled feral side of things

Corvus: nope, usually it's in the background just watching, or as a kind of side character to things; has been for years. Once in a while it stands out, but not often.

Auralia: Sounds like a protector.

EvonneT.Story: but the cage off the head

seems like freedom

EvonneT.Story: what is the idea of the cage on the head?

that requires you to remove it

Corvus: *shrug* i usually take him as being symbolic of a part of myself; the cage could have just been a representative of some sort of restrictions i was putting on myself, that needed removal

EvonneT.Story: do you know what those are?

or may be?

Corvus: eh, personality traits that needed to change, mental blocks, needing to accept certain aspects of myself for what they are, that they can't be forcibly changed

EvonneT.Story: that sounds like it was a very powerful message for you

Corvus: i sometimes get some really heavy stuff through dreams *lol*

dont always consciously get it right away, but it still comes through on some level--still has an effect even if i am not fullyaware or aknowledging of it

EvonneT.Story: i know what you mean

i have to head off line to bed

Auralia: Yep. I do too.

Auralia: Great chat, Ennove! I'm really glad you host these. Best with Thomas!

EvonneT.Story: thanks!

thanks twice!

:)

Auralia: Night Corv!

EvonneT.Story: it is great of you both to come.

Corvus: i've got to go back to bed myself *lol* or in the morning, and im ight be able to pick up the threads of the strange dream i was having over the course of my nap

EvonneT.Story: kewl corv  ;-D

The Hero is You! Part IV

Myths tell the story about who we really are.  Joseph Campbell points out that our own birth is an entry into this process.  The most wonderful thing is, the hero is you!

The Hero's Journey with Joseph Campbell

A free, online 57 minute film/interview.  It is a good one too!

Most importantly, Joseph Campbell explains what a myth is and why it is not a lie.  He speaks about his own path of following his bliss and how it led him to success.  Joseph Campbell is apparently considered an athiest.  The difference between a theist and an athiest is also mentioned.

I am a big Joseph Campbell fan. I don't always agree with what he says, but most of it I do.  He was one of the great, world storytellers.

Harmony: The Quest For Companionship

A Youtube of the Hero's Journey... Short, sweet and I like the simple musical background too.
