Tarot Cards

Introduction

The complete seventy- eight card tarot pack is divided into two sections: twenty-two Major Arcana and fifty-six Minor Arcana cards. The Major Arcana are twenty-two trump cards, usually numbered 0 through 21 and displaying names such as "The Empress" or "The Fool." The Minor Arcana contain four suits of fourteen cards each, ace through ten and four court cards: king, queen, knight, and page. The most common suits are swords, wands, cups, and pentacles.

The twentieth century has witnessed he publication of hundreds of different tarot decks. The outpouring of tarot embraces dozens of subjects and themes, including medieval and Renaissance figures, fantasy subjects, images based on mythology, folklore, different cultures and societies, feminism, and traditional tarot symbolism, from simple line drawings to the colorful richness of fine art.

The Ten Card Spread

The ten-card spread is one of the most popular and effective methods of using the tarot for divination. It is a slightly altered version of the Ancient Celtic Method described by Arthur Edward Waite in The Pictorial Key To The Tarot.

The person seeking an answer to a question is known as the questioner or querent. The questioner sits at a table opposite the diviner and both persons maintain a serious attitude.

The questioner should concentrate on the specific question to be answered. This question is stated aloud to the diviner while the questioner shuffles the face down deck. The person who handles the cards impregnates them with personal magnetism and thereby creates a rapport between the subconscious and the cards. The cards may be shuffled either by hand or by riffling (seperating the deck into two parts and riffling them with the thumb so the cards intermix). The shuffling  must be done by the person seeking and interpretation or prediction-not by the diviner. The cards are always viewed from the diviner's position.

Beginning with the top card as number one, the second card are number two, and so on, the diviner turns over the first six cards, one at a time, placing them face up on the table in the sequence explained.

The cards with pictures upside down to the diviner are said to be reversed and therefore the reverse meanings apply to them. Generally if more than half the cards are reversed, the diviner may find a better reading is obtained by moving the reversed cards to the upright position. The significane of the cards in the ten-card spread is as follows:

Card 1: Present Position, Atmosphere in which the questioner is presently working and living. Influences on the questioner. (Center card).

Card 2: Immediate Influence. The nature of the influences or the obstacles that lie just ahead. This card crosses the questioner. (Place card on top of first card sideways).

Card 3: Goal of destiny. The ultimate goal or destiny of the questioner. The best that can be accomplished by the questioner based on existing circumstances. This card may also represent the questioners aim or ideal within the present frame of reference. This card crowns the questioner. (Place this card above the first two).

Card 4: Distant past foundation. The broad and basic events and influences which existed in the past and upon which the present events are based. This card is behind the questioner. (Place this card to the right beside the first two).

Card 5: Recent past events. The most recent sphere of influence or events that has passed or is just passing. The card may represent distant past influences exerting presure on recent events. This card is beneath the questioner. (Place this card at the bottom of the first two).

Card 6: Future influence. In a broad sense, the sphere of influence taht is coming into being in the near future. This card is in front of the questioner. (Place this card to the left of the first two).

After reading the preceding six cards, the diviner proceeds to turn over the next four cards from the deck placing them one above the other in a line to the right of the previous six cards.

Card 7: The questioner. The questioner's present position or attitude within the circumstances. This card is used to place the questionerin proper perspective.

Card 8: Enviromental factors. The questioner's influence on other people and his or her position in life. Tendencies and factors that exist with respect to other persons who may have an effect on the questioner.

Card 9: Inner emotions. The inner hopes, hidden emotions and secret desires, fears and anxieties of the questioner. Includes those thoughts which will come  to the mind of the questioner in the future.

Card 10: Final results. The Culmination and results of all the influences revealed by the other cards in the divination, provided events and influences continue as indicated.

All information on the tarot pages comes from The Rider-Waite Universal Tarot Instructions by Stuart R. Kaplan US Games Systems, INC.

Tarot Cards

The oldest known cards used for divination are the tarocchi, or Tarot cards. Their exact origin is unknown. Some occultists and tarot experts, including Etteilla, Eliphas Levi, and S. L. MacGregor-Mathers, suggest they can be traced back to ancient Egypt, while others consider them an invention of the Chinese. However, there is little or no evidence to support either of these theories. It seems far more likely that the Roma, or Gypsies, brought the cards with them into Europe, although the exact date of this is unknown. The earliest known deck of tarot cards dates from the fourteenth century. De Givry claims there is a trace of the tarot in Germany as early as 1329 but does not give any details.

The tarot deck itself consists of seventy-eight cards in two parts: the Major Arcana (or Greater Trumps) and the Minor Arcana (or Lesser Trumps). The Major Arcana consists of twenty-two cards. Each displays and allegorical figure in a scene of complicated symbolic meaning. Some occultists attribute them to the twenty-two letter of the Hebrew Alphabet:

1 - The Magician - Aleph
2 - The High Priestess - Beth
3 - The Empress - Gimel
4 - The Emperor - Daleth
5 - The Hierophant - Heh
6 - The Lovers - Vav
7 - The Chariot - Zain
8 - Justice - Cheth
9 - The Hermit - Teth
10 - The Wheel Of Fortune - Yod
11 - Strength - Kaph
12 - The Hanged Man - Lamed
13 - Death - Mem
14 - Temperance - Nun
15 - The Devil - Samekh
16 - The Tower - Ayin
17 - The Star - Peh
18 - The Moon - Tzaddi
19 - The Sun - Qoph
20 - Judgement - Resh
21 - The World - Shin
0 - The Fool - Tav

While some attribute the cards listed here, others, including Paul F. Case, place The Fool at the beginning (since the number is 0), realigning up everything as follows:

0 - The Fool - Aleph
1 - The Magician - Beth
2 - The High Priestess - Ginel

To further complicate matters, A. E. Waite and Paul E. Case give the number 8 to Strength and number 11 to Justice, the reverse of what all other practitioners contend.

The Minor Arcana is divided into four suits, variously known as Wands (Koshes, Staffs, Staves, Batons, Rods, Sceptors), Cups (Koros, Chalices, Cauldrons, Vessels), Pentacles (Bolers, Coins, Disks, Stars, Deniers), and Swords (Chivs, Knives, Blades, Spears). Each suit runs from Ace to Ten, with a Page, Knight, Queen, and King. The regular card deck of hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades is based on the Minor Arcana. Somewhere along the way the Page became a Jack, the Knight fell out, and the Major Arcana's Fool became the Joker.

On some decks, the cards of the Minor Arcana merely display the number of each suit, such as six swords, three cups, or ten pentacles. But many more decks depict a whole scene on each card, usually incorporating the number of symbols in the scene.

In a reading, the Querent shuffles the cards and then draws off a number of them. The Reader arranges these cards in a particular pattern - many different spreads can be used. Each card position has its own meaning, which the Reader interprets. The cards can give an indication of the probable course of events over the next few months for the Querent. As with any form of divination however, nothing is set in stone, and the forces can change or be changed.

Celtic Cross

The Celtic Cross spread is one of the most common tarot spreads. There is a cross in the center, with a row of 4 cards along the side. This spread will provide a fairly in-depth look at a situation including past, present and external influences. Beginners may want to start with a spread with fewer cards.

Positions: 1 - (beneath the 2 card) Basis of the situation. It represents the general tone of the reading and identifies the problem for the querent.

2 - Crosses the situation. This card shows the challenges or obstacles that are facing the querent.

3 - Subconscious. The true nature of how the querent feels about the matter.

4 - The past. Events of the recent past that will have influence or effect on the matter at hand.

1 - Covers. Influences that surround the issue.

2 - Crosses. (This card is placed on top of the 1 card). Obstacles or conflicts that are working against the issue.

3 - The Base. Events from the past that have played a role in the creation of the situation.

4 - The Future. Events that may take place in the near future as a result of this issue.

5 - Outcome. The final outcome, how the issue will finally resolve itself.
