Or better? Or worse? Do you crave things from your childhood?

I have made 3 things my mom routinely made this week. I am wondering if that's normal. And like her, I have been adding "SOME of ____." and "just kind of LOOKING at it"

The latest is her onion dip. Very basic, very '50's. Cream cheese, onion, mayo, worchestershire--don't ask proportions.

DG LOVES it when I make things from when I was a kid, whether she likes THEM or not.

Interesting question...

I know I have a very different approach to cooking than my mom. I am much more of a "from scratch" cook and she tends to go with more prepared mixes and outright ready-to-eat foods. She says it takes "too much time", but I don't really remember her being too big on cooking from scratch to begin with. That's why I have once again claimed Thanksgiving dinner for my house this year.

I'm not saying my mom isn't a good cook when she wants to be, but she tends to make more "traditional" meals and cooks in a completely different style than I do. I tend to be much more adventurous in my cuisine.

And, I don't think there's anything strange about craving/making stuff from your childhood. I'm just trying to think of something that I really want... lol

I'd have to say that, no, I don't cook like my Mom.

I guess I've found my own way, have several "specialty" dishes that my friends have liked and have asked for the recipes. There are a coupla things my Mom made, though, that I have documented and made--and a couple more that I should probably get from her... more ethnic dishes. Thanks for reminding me.

My Dad was probably the more adventurous cook. He was especially good at baking pies. And making big breakfasts on Sunday. lol... He's no slouch!

Oh BOY!
That just brought back a WONDERFUL memory. The "rule" in our house growing up was that you could have ANYTHING you wanted for breakfast on Sunday. We called it "Rosie's Jiffy Restaurant".

What did our mother's do without microwaves (or cell phones)?

Hey, Raf. Cool. Was that Sunday morning rule restricted to breakfast foods? What is someone wanted, say, lasagna???

I dunno. I think it was by default breakfast foods and never came up.

Well, maybe a potato chip or two.

I so some ethnic dishes like my mom or aunt, but even then I've added or changed some ingredients.

I make a really great stroganoff. Started with a basic recipe and added to it. But when my kids were small I made up this kid friendly stroganoff like casserole. We called it "Junk". To this day when the kids visit I ask them if they want real stroganoff or Junk, they always pick the Junk. Comfort food thing I guess.

Okay, post the great stroganoff recipe.

I make something that my mom called Spanish rice, but with pasta and now call it goo-lash because my former day care lady (who was a gourmet cook, and thus spoiled my DG from a REALLY early age) did.

Needless to say, neither is ethnically correct.
