Just wanted to let you all know I signed up to be a recipe tester for America's Test Kitchen. (I'm so excited about it.) Had my first assignment this week - yellow cake with chocolate frosting. What a mess I made in the kitchen! But it was quite fun buying the special bittersweet chocolate and the Dutch processed cocoa needed for the frosting.

Unfortunately, the survey I was asked to complete after making the recipe didn't correspond to what I had been asked to make. So there seems to be a little problem at the Test Kitchen with matching the right survey to the right recipe.

Nonetheless, I'll post all recipes I receive here.

It's Friday night , and I may be drunk, but how can I use my extensive culinary skills to ultimately make something that will whoop the Iron Chef's ass?

Oh hell no, Ron, you're not drunk, you're just a bit alcoholicly impaired. I won't even begin to suggest anything to compete with those Iron Chefs. Isn't that such a great show though??? If I was in a contest with them, I'd so lose, it wouldn't even be funny. Well, maybe it would be funny because I'd be stumbling and bumbling around, not having a clue what I was doing.

After watching Iron Chef for quite a few episodes, I've decided the chefs know ahead of time what the secret ingredient is and they've already developed their recipes. Still a good show to watch with plenty of excitement.

Eden, the cake turned out heavy and tasteless. (I'll try to post the recipe this weekend. ... I'm regretting not copying the recipe to a file. I just printed it, then used it, not thinking ahead of time to save it for later use.) But it was a lot of fun making! I made a huge mess in my kitchen with all the bowls and spoons, measuring cups, the Kitchen Aid mixer, the hand mixer, flour all over the floor, powdered sugar everywhere, cocoa all over my shirt. You get the picture.

Oh, yes I was.. lol but, it was OK b/c I was only down the street BSing with my neighbor where there was plenty of beer to go around...

I just happened to stumble upon your post when I came home and was contemplating the menu for Saturday's Mom's B-day/Labor Day weekend cookout.

Your cake story inspired me to go ahead and make the b-day cake that night. Surprisingly, it turned out really good but I was afraid to use it because once it was finished, there was really no telling if I had actually made it correctly short of cutting into it early.

As for your test cake - assuming a good recipe - and it may not be considering you're a tester - my guess would be, in order:

overmixing, old baking powder, or the wrong flour called out.

And, actually, I miss the original Japanese version of Iron Chef from the mid to late-90s. I think it's only on sporadically at 4AM Monday and I don't miss it that much.

You're right about them knowing ahead of time. I saw where they're given about 15-30 minutes (I think it was) early notice so they can ask for other ingredients they may need. Not a lot of time to think about it, but it isn't a total surprise to them either.

Oh. I'd lose big time too, but I'm sure I could make it look like I was giving them a challenge - until judging, at least.
