Do not lie, but if you can say something like one of the following, it would help you:
 
Took advantage of time off for:
 
Schooling
Caring for a family member
Had surgery with long recuperation (ie, back, feet, etc)
Deployed with NationalGuard/ Reserves
Travelled with family following transition
Move in support of spouse's career

Bill,
   I work with First responders, Hazmat teams and other IH  personel and think in your case a listing of the Schools that you attended while in the Corps would be beneficial. Also I would just delete the salary and put down negoable (sp??)
   Your in a hot field and you shouldn't undersell your marketability at this point in time.
