Looking for good position for long term - OldSeller - 4/24/2004 - 12:02:17 PM
I have been in sales for 25 years, but have made the fatal error of changing jobs, and industries, too often. Three years ago, I left a position that paid pretty well, but where my sales were increasing and my income was decreasing because of changes to the commission structure. It was also a huge company with layers of management that made the simplest decisions take weeks. So I left, went into a completely new field where the commissions are terriffic, but the market collapsed almost instantly upon my entry. I want to make one final move ( I am 49 years old) and I have an excellent sales record. What is depressing is that the value of sales people seems to be in freefall!

You are wrong about the value of a salesperson being in a freefall. In some markets, you would be the most sought after possession in the world. And of course, in other markets, not so much.

Can I ask what are you skilled in selling? Is it products? Services? Both?

I feel for you on the commission thing. I worked at a newpaper where no matter what we sold, we were the scum of the earth to either the management (because we took home so much money) or the clerical staff (because we took home so much money.) So they decided to change things around a bit. I went from about 2000+ per month in commissions to about 250 in commissions. How's that for a thank you and kick in the butt?!?!? I left and took a couple of bad turns but think I may have found the right place for me if they call me back for the interview I'm expecting.

Oh, and on the title of the post... ISN'T EVERYONE?

I sell both products and services. Currently, I sell HVAC equipment to commercial contractors, which requires a lot of technical support as well as very heavy administration. Previously, I have sold the concept of redistribution, and then the items...I was very successful at that, with a high year at 6.5MM in sales. I really want to sell something where I can add value, and be well paid. Back to your point...doesn't everyone

Well, I sell advertising, and I love it. If you like creative stuff, it can work. Have you looked into insurance? I've heard some good things from the insurance guys in my town. I would find something you believe in and can buy into yourself.

Have you thought about starting your own business?

I have thought of starting my own business but I do not have the start-up capital, or, truthfully, the right business plan. I can sell just about anything, given the right channel. For instance, selling replacement windows to homeowners is a lot of fun, but the companies involved in those businesses force the one-time close. That is just not me. I prefer to sell into a channel that requires long term relationships and repeat sales to the same customer.

My problem is that I feel that I have devalued myself by changing jobs often in the past 14 years. I have an excellent reason for every change, inlcuding companies selling, going bankrupt, and changing commission packages to favor lower paid, younger reps, resulting in my sales increasing and my income going down! Still doesn't look good to have 7 postions in 14 years. My comeback is that I have a lot of knowledge about a lot of businesses, and that I am an excellent sales rep and business manager. I have done well at every position. I have not done well financially in the past three years, but all due to the market collapse in construction in the Bay Ares. I have great customers who buy everything they can from me.

I need to find a market and a channel that is thriving. While every market fluctuates, I want a channel that doesn't implode on itself on occasion, with the downturn lasting several years.
