breaking into sales - qwilli - 4/25/2004 - 7:29:51 PM
I am a 2000 college grad. I've been working in the Graphic Arts industry as a desinger for the past 3 years. I have really lost interest in design and feel drawn to sales. I'm currently transitioning into a sales role withing my company but would like to pursue a position outside of my company. Advertising seems like a fit for me, but 3+ years of experience seems to be the requirement. Any career advice from the pros?

Wanna come take my job when I leave? LOL

Not many jobs out there require both graphic arts and sales experience, but if you have one sometime it's easy to get the other. You could work for a local magazine that needs both of these. You could offer to work for commission for the sales part and then add a few hours for the actual graphic design of the ad. You could also just ask for a higher commission rate to forgo the hourly part.

You are probably going to have to sell yourself as a graphic artist first, then prove yourself as a sales person.

If you know of any newwer magazines around, that might be a starting point. If you were close to where I live I could tell you about TONS. So, are you anywhere near Northern CA or Southern OR???

Good Luck!!!

Dandie Andy, what is your background in? I do like the Northern CA and Southern OR area. How did you break into your position?

I work in advertising as a "sales rep" but I also do all the design work. It's a small monthly paper, and pays very little. It's hourly, not commission based, so a little annoying when I sell something really good but get nothing extra from it. It's for a non-profit, so there is your reason.

You could do quite a bit for a company in a graphics position then ask to be put into a sales training position too. There is a great annual magazine that pays their sales people as well as their graphic artists very well. They are well established and have several different magazines (all annuals, mostly tourism based, all VERY well received in the community) so they would be a great place to get into.

I suggest staying away from daily papers if I were you, you will just go nuts in either capacity for very little pay. Monthly or annual or sometimes quarterly can be a good place to get into. You will find most of those pieces have very low rates of pay.

Anyway, try this daily paper site for jobs in the area I live www.times-standard.com

Or go to the CalJobs web site for other stuff. www.caljobs.ca.gov

Is that what you said Andy? That surprises me. When I sold for a major city daily, about 15 years ago, we weren't making as much as the TV reps, but most were pulling down a solid 50k or better, in salary and commission ( commission was small though). There was also a company pension plan, stock options, very comprehensive free benefit package and all in all, it was considered a pretty good gig. Has it changed that much?
