Just read the unemployment rate thread - normanbaumgartner - 8/1/2003 - 8:31:08 AM |
last night, now I wonder why Delos calls PBS propogandaists (sp). After all they are a not for profit station that gets both goverment and corporate grants, about as independant as they come, next thing you know he will say NPR puts sping on things, granted everything has a slant, but IMO NPR and PBS tend to have the less spin of all other news sources. They give you info and let you decide what to do with it, not slamming you Doc just expressing my opinion on what I consider a valuable resource. |

Thanks for the caveat abut me being a - Dr. Delos - 8/1/2003 - 8:31:08 AM |
resource. However, I explained below the dead giveawyas that show PBS was trying to prove a point and pushed what they did into the realm of propaganda. Very little on PBS is straightforward and not tiltes toward th eleft. Bill Moyers is the perfect example. He is and out and out socialist, for God's sake. You have to be kidding about NPR. NPR is the equivalent to Radio Free China/Cuba/North Korea. They are HARD CORE lefties. |

I will have to disagree with about - normanbaumgartner - 8/1/2003 - 8:31:08 AM |
NPR, and you know what they say about stats, you can manipulate them to say what you want them to say, consider this, how much would the rate on the show drop if they included stay at home dads, I know several in my neighborhood. My main point is this information is just that information, it is our job to decipher the information as best we can to determine what the facts are, I understand unemployment and how it is calculated and the reasons behind it (a comparison over time tool) however it is a fact that at any given time the actual % of people out of work is higher than the goverment calculated rate, and I think that is all the show was trying to point out. |

Re: rates don't show it all - Bluesky1967 - 8/1/2003 - 8:31:08 AM |
"U.S. unemployment fell in July, the government said Friday, even though employers cut thousands of jobs from payrolls, defying expectations that payrolls would grow." http://money.cnn.com/2003/08/01/news/economy/jobs/index.htm This right here proves the rate doesn't really show how many are unemployed. These people who just lost jobs won't be counted as unemployed until their severance or ue benefits run out and are actively looking for jobs. |

Bluesky... please read the input from - *QC* - 8/1/2003 - 8:31:08 AM |
tex on the subject. The published rate is not supposed to be inclusive of all unemployed. It is a constant measure of the same type during all years.... |

1.) Ask ANYONE about NPR - that is is close to communist propaganda as you can get. The ONLY outlet further to the left is Radio Pacifica. 2.) If I went up to EVERY person not working right now and offered them $100 an hour to watch TV, every single one of them would say that they would work. If you go by that, the unemployment rate is 50%. We don;t do that, we want to know: Over 16 Able to work Available to work Looking for work THAT is the definition of unemployment. You can get all the addditional out of work groups like disaffected workers, disabled (sick) workers, discouraged workes etc. from the BLS web site. But we need to stick to ONE definition. |

read my thread above, I agree with that - normanbaumgartner - 8/1/2003 - 8:31:08 AM |
It (unemployment rate) is really just a comparison tool to compare different time periods and an indicator of economic growth/slowdown. that is all it is, and it really is just one piece of the economic puzzle. And lets face it is higher the last few years. |

You've got it exactly right. |

Oh I know, the whole thing is misleading, but I just wonder if the rollercoaster is what keeps business from hiring. |

Last night I predicted that SOMEONE - Dr. Delos - 8/1/2003 - 8:31:08 AM |
would say "These people who just lost jobs won't be counted as unemployed until their severance or ue benefits run out and are actively looking for jobs" And sure enough, somebody did. Unemployment is a survey based on what I typed above. IT has NOTHING to do with who is collecting or not collecting unemployment insurance. The figure today is down to 6.2%. The number of discouraged workers is down slightly and the rest of the difference is the female workforce declining. |

I know you tend to lean towards the right, and I am not going to get into a political debate, but NPR is not what you say it is, and FYI it is not my only source of information, like I said in order to form an opinion on anything, one must first gather up as much info as possible from various sources and then reach a conclusion, it is like a research paper, you wouldn't use just one resource for your PHD thesis not would you??? |
