Hi! My name is Jackie. I am 25 years old. I am a member of UFCW Local 832 here in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I work as a part-time cashier at Canada Safeway (grocery store) for 6 years. I am very involved in my local. I was just on a 4 week National Youth Internship Program that my union offers. It is for anyone 26 and under. The main idea for the internship is that UFCW wants to get youth involved in there locals as we are the future of tomorrow, to learn the history of UFCW. The first week we just did a summary of the history of UFCW Canada. In the 2nd week we had the pleasure of going to the CLC (Canadian Labour of Congress) convention in Montreal, Quebec. While we were there, we did a protest against Wal-Mart because they close a store down in Jeanquiere, Quebec because the workers wanted to unionize it. I have my magazine articles from my local about it, if you guys would like to see them.   The last 2 weeks we went to Brooks & Calgary, Alberta. In Brooks we worked on a very tough organizing drive for a meat packing plant called Lakeside Packers. Lakeside is owned by Tyson foods. If you guys want, there's a website all about what happened. It's www.terribletyson.com.  Basically what happened was the workers were all ready to strike on July 20th but Ralph Klein (Alberta's premiere) ordered the workers back to work because he claimed they were an 'essential service' which they are not. As of right now, the company & union are in negoations but Tyson keeps walking away from them.  They need a union in there so badly.  The last couple of days we did 'Talking Union' training. Talking Union is a program run by our national office where we go into high schools and talk about the advantages of unionized jobs compared to non-unionized ones. I am also on my youth committee's executive board. I am the recorder, so I take notes at every meeting.  I also attened every meeting my union has, and have also atteneded 3 confrences. My whole family is involved in there unions.  If any of you have questions, please don't be afraid to ask.

I am now a SPUR for my local. A SPUR is a Special Project Union Representitive. I am also doing Talking Union which is a program put on by our local where we go into high schools and talk to kids about the advantage of unionized jobs.  I am also going to be a teacher at my locals youth confrence next year.

Sounds like fun, and congratulations. I bet it will be a bit nerve racking, but i'm sure you will do a great job. Keep up the good work.

To be honest with you, not sure if i have mentioned this before or not. When i was in the Walmart Manager Training Program i had to go to school fair, where the students go around and talk to different representatives from a variety of companies that try and recruit the teens. Well we were set up right across from a union table. Needless to say tempers were hot. Some of my fellow classmates were all by the book and so they were bad mouthing those representatives and the same thing was being done back. Had some kids come up to us, and ask us what walmarts stance was on unions, which we knew where they got the idea to ask from. Even though walmart prepares managers how to answer that question, it still is a shocking question to be asked, especially when you personally don't mind unions. Was a ackward situation to be in.

Well keep up the good work, and keep us posted.

Lies, The last 3 days of my internship we learned how to deal with those kinds of problems. When we do go into schools, a union rep will go with us incase we need help. We had to role play that sort of situation.  Just to let you know I posted my Lakeside/Tyson article on the union page. Its the copy that will be in my magazine.

Lies, I'm not sure if I told you in the email or not but I just became part of my unions advisory board.  I'm so excited. I found out yesterday (sunday, Oct 8th) that I qualified to see U2 & Pearl Jam in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 9th.  When the station I qualified called me I was live on air.  I've never been there but it looks beautiful. When the station gets the 'golden pineapples' I have to go down and pick one and if I pick one with the tickets, then I get to go. As far as I know my flight, airfare and hotel is paid for as well as the tickets. If it's like it was with my former union rep (She won a trip to Ireland to see U2) then I may get to meet them as well. I'm going to take my bf. Today was out thanksgiving up here. I'm also going to be on an organizing drive here.  I'd tell you who its for but I'm not allowed to. Thanks for everything Lies!
