Hello! I'm new to the boards. I've been with Walmart for 4 years - did time in grocery, bakery, cashier, service desk, photo (for 1 week :) ), layaway, jewelry, and many of the GM positions. I entered into the internship last summer only to be told I needed to be first in line so I did the first line program from last May until this past April. I busted my butt off on that program to be yelled at one day for not covering my shift as management up front. I had it and stepped down and went to TLE to be a service technician (while on the program I was acting management from September - November due to some changes in people) and really loved it and loved the people. I've recently transferred to another store in a town where I'm pursuing my masters in music education.
I was at one point gung ho as Walmart management being my backup but now I don't want to have anything to do with management in the company. I'm unhappy with many of the changes - one being the elimination of the TLE assistant which is what I would have gone for, and some other things. I also don't agree with how many of my managers treated most of their associates - be it their choice to treat them like that, or trying to follow company guidelines and rules, it was wrong. The only way I'd do it now is to change how things run and how people are treated, which in the end would be dependent upon the store and other management I'd be working with.
Like I said, I'm pursuing my masters in music education - I play the violin and have found through student teaching that it's where I belong and it is truly my passion and place in life. I'm engaged and will be getting married next May!!! and am very excited about that. I love Harry Potter and the Stephanie Plum series and watching Disney movies. I'm a pretty outgoing person and I'd like to think that I usually have a pretty open mind about things.
Well, I wrote a novel so that's me! |

Dsmusic---I curious is your store a training store? Because i didn't go through the first in line to become an assistant manager. I went through the mtp (manager training program). First in line requires more training, but you get do get more hands on. IF you are in the training store, sadly managers often try and make you do it that way. |

Under the new first in line program, it is supposed to be the manager training program in 1 year for a college student. It is then up to the market manager if they want you to go through mtp. First in line at our store was a joke - they never helped us, our sponsors never bothered with us - when we'd talk with them they'd be like, we have nothing for you to do.. and when they did have things for us, it was stupid.. go change this signing... basically extra work. I didn't learn much from the managers at all. I sought out mostly all the information on my program and information I was interested in learning. Our store wasn't a site for the mtp but the store across town was - where I started and the store manager helped me move up.
From my understanding, first in line is yet again under construction. The new program is honestly the manager training program - my first sponsor came right off the program and we compared books - exactly the same pages, activities, everything. |

I would try and get into the manager training program instead of the first in line, because you pointed out the first in line is the same in book work, CBL's, videos, etc. First in Line as you said was intended for college students, but when i was in the mtp a person in my class was attending college but was going to have it completed by the end of the class period, so they were allowed to avoid the first in line program. Unfortunately, some of my class did not have any walmart experience and felt they were better than the hourly associates due to thier titles. I did feel bad for one person in my group, because he came in and had not completed any of the cbl's that an hourly associate had of and he couldn't get caught up, so he quit. The videos are kinda funny, and the best part is there are 2 funny actors who do the videos and try and make it interesting (its really boring despite thier efforts), and then when you go to Food School (have to take a state test), you watch a video about the 2 actors. Very funny how walmart did that to liven up things. I know this makes little sense, but just wanted to share. If you really do want to go into the mtp, and if you think your management team will let you, then learn as much as you can before you go. I went in and had never been a cashier, because i didnt' want to do it everyday (pulled up front), well in the program you only have a short period of time to learn everything you need to do, such as claims, jewelry, photo lab, etc. Walmart wants to train you to do everything at least somewhat, that way if someone walks out and says i quit, then its not big deal. |

Glad that your sponsor shared his books with you. If you have any questions i would recommend you ask him, but feel free to ask me and i'll let ya know what to expect in the manager training program, Food School(dont' worry about this class, there are co-managers who still have not passed the state test), Labor Relations, Gun Class, Union/3rd Party class (this class is only mandated in select areas), etc. |

I'm no longer in the training program and at this time I do not intend to pursue a career with Walmart further. I like TLE but I do not forsee myself wanting to do anything else in the store - between being a floor associate and moving departments and the program, I've honestly worked all the floor departments, grocery, and back office positions - there may be one or two that I missed, but overall there is nothing more I'd like to do. It's unfortunate but it's been a good job through college but I don't want to be stuck there when I get married and move away from my family - especially when I'd like to travel back every once in a while for Christmas or Thanksgiving :oP
I appreciate your support though. The videos were pretty bad :oP hehe |

Lies---- you know me I have been trying to get into the MTP program. But I am afraid now that with the new store Manager that I have now. I will not be moving anywhere. I kind of wished that I could have transfered to the store that the manager that I started with went too. For Example; I have been a CSM now of about 9 months. My e-val came up this year and get this. The area Assist Manager that I had said that He was going to give me a "meets" because I did not know how to do any e-vals,schedules, or coaching. I had approached him around Jan of this year and I said. Hey my e-val is coming up soon and I would like to learn these things. So you can see that I was really upset when I got my e-val. But to make a happy ending to this story. This other Assist Manager that I use to work under. She heard about my e-val and talked to the store Manager and told her that I may not know everything about being a CSM. Because I had only been it for a short time. But that I have always gone out of my way to help the customers and fellow associates. Plus I have had about three letters written about me in the local Newspaper. This Assist manager fought for me and I finally did get my excess. But it has now been 9 months and I still have not been taught what all I need to know about being a CSM. I have been wanting to move up. But I really think that I am at a stand still.Another way of saying ....I don't think that I will be going anywhere. Lady |

DSM--- If you change your mind let me know. I agree the videos while trying to be humurous are boring. Lady---Sorry, to hear that. Unfortunately, i do agree that your store manager would have been a major help in your path into the program. I would talk to the assistant that knows you are going out of your way. Talk to that manager when no one else is around about it and tell them you are interested and ask them for thier insight and what to expect. I will be happy to share my own knowledge of the program as well, but asking that manger shows you are really interested and makes them feel important. This could come into play later, especially since that manager as told a manager that you are trying. Then the next time the mtp comes up apply for it. If you are not sure when this is, dont' see it on the wire, and if your assistant cannot help you, then you can always e-mail your district manager at home. In fact this won't hurt at all to e-mail him/her at home. In your e-mail list all the reasons you feel you are qualified. Don't list your short comings, and ask them when the next sign up is and how to go about applying. Tihs helps, because they can for sure answer your question and they are keeping in in the back of thier mind for when you do. Talk to you more soon. |
